Hutchinson High School golf coach Charlie Pierce and Hutchinson’s legendary Prairie Dunes Country Club course are featured by Golfers Journal in an essay online at golfersjournal.com.
Pierce has coached the Hutchinson Salthawks for 23 years and has been a member of Prairie Dunes for 35 years.
The original nine holes of Prairie Dunes were designed in 1937 by Perry Maxwell and the second nine holes were designed by Press Maxwell in 1957.
The essay is called “The Prairie Dunes Model.” The sub-head says “What we can learn from an elite club’s relationship with the high school team.”

KCAC commissioner Ted Breidenthal resigns
The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) announced Monday that Ted Breidenthal will conclude his time as commissioner of the conference on Aug. 22 after submitting his resignation last week.
Breidenthal joined the KCAC as commissioner in September 2023 after serving as commissioner of the Continental Athletic Conference from 2008-2023.
“On behalf of the KCAC institutions and their leaders, I want to thank Ted for his guidance and work for our conference and its student-athletes”, said KCAC Board of Presidents Chairperson and Bethel College president Jon C. Gering.
Gering said the conference will immediately launch a national search for its next commissioner.
The 14-member Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), founded in 1890, is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and sponsors 28 varsity sports. It is the second oldest college sports league in the country.
