The Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team swept a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference doubleheader against the Colby Trojans Saturday at Young Memorial Field in Colby.
Hutchinson (30-16 overall, 12-12 Jayhawk West) won the first game 4-1 and lost the second game 7-3.
The Blue Dragons and Trojans (26-20 overall, 13-11 Jayhawk West) split a doubleheader on Thursday. Colby won the first game 7-3 and Hutchinson won the second game 22-10.
In the first game, Hutchinson scored one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Anthony Mazza and one run in the second on a Colby error for a 2-0 lead.
Colby scored one run on a Blue Dragon error in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, Hutchinson’s Leo Griffin singled in pinch-runner Cael Hamrick and Eli Duncan scored on a throwing error to make the final score 4-1.
Coliin Flores retired the side in the bottom of the seventh inning to save the victory for Hutchinson starting pitcher Lachlan Rosser.
In the second game, Colby scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning (one unearned) to take a 2-0 lead over the Blue Dragons.
Colby plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.
The Blue Dragons scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut Colby’s lead to 6-2. AJ Mustow singled home CJ Reid and scored on Griffin’s RBI double.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Colby hit a two-out solo homer to increase its leader the Blue Dragons to 7-2.
The Blue Dragons scored one run in the top of the seventh on a balk by the Colby pitcher to make the score 7-3, but stranded two baserunners.
Hutchinson hosts the Sterling College junior varsity baseball team at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Blue Dragons will host Garden City Community College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Williams Stadium in Garden City and will host a 1 p.m. doubleheader next Saturday against the Broncbusters.
Hutchinson will travel to Tiger Ballpark in Arkansas City for a 1 p.m. single game against the Cowley College Tigers on April 28.
Hutchinson’s final four-game league series will be played against Pratt.
The Blue Dragons and the Pratt Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 1 at Hobart-Detter Field.
Hutchinson and Pratt play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 3 at Stanion Field in Pratt.
Blue Dragon men’s, women’s track teams both finish 2nd at Kansas Wesleyan Coyote Classic
The Hutchinson Community College men’s and women’s track teams both finished second at the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyote Challenge Friday and Saturday.
The Blue Dragon men’s track team scored 123 points to finish 17 points behind the first-place Coyotes from Kansas Wesleyan University.
Wichita State University ran away with the women’s team title with 156 points. Hutchinson placed second with 85 points.
The track events took place at the Graves Family Sports Complex in Salina and the field events took place near the Church of the Cross in Salina.
The Blue Dragons competed against club teams, unattached athletes, two-year community colleges such as Barton, Butler, Cloud County, Colby, Cowley, Fort Hays Tech Northwest, Garden City and Neosho County; and four-year programs from Bethany College, Bethel College, Fort Hays State, Friends University, Kansas Wesleyan, Mid-America Christian, Park University, Sterling College, Tabor College and Wichita State University.
First-place finishers for the Blue Dragon men were D’Antonio Warren, men’s 100-meter dash (10.68 seconds); Da’Shawn Lester, 400-meter dash (48.41); David Third, 400 hurdles (51.00 seconds); Titus Kiprotich, 1,500-meter run (3 minutes, 56.43 seconds); Cornelius Kogo, 5,000 meters, 14:38.19; 4×100 relay, 40.65 and 4×400 relay, 3:15.73.
Hutchinson’s Jayce Spencer placed second in the men’s pole vault (14-3 1/4).
First-place finishers for the Hutchinson women were 4×100 relay, 48.04; Laura Avila, 5,000 meter run, 18:31.77; Janel Montaque (unattached), shot put, 44-2; and Sidney Holt, 200, 24.92.
Aiyanna Green placed second in the women’s hammer throw, 136 feet, 8 inches; Yaya Moreno, women’s long jump, 17-9 1/2; and Grace Bender, women’s pole vault, 9-10.
Green also placed third in the women’s shot put with an effort pf 39-9 3/4. Deisheline Mayer Scott was third in the women’s hammer throw, 134-3.

Former Blue Dragon standout Kiki Smith transfers to Purdue
Former Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball standout Kiki Smith, who played her freshman season at HutchCC and her sophomore year at the University of Arkansas, will be a Purdue Boilermaker next season.
Smith, who entered the transfer portal on April 1, took an official visit with the Boilermakers last week and was down to Purdue and TCU out of the portal.
Smith was a standout for Arkansas as a sophomore last season, averaging 10.2 points and 2 assists per game.
She shot 42% from the field and 40% from 3-point range for the Razorbacks. In games against Alabama and South Carolina, Smith poured in a season-high 23 points, followed by 18 points against the eventual national runner-ups during conference play.
Prior to her one-year stay in Fayetteville, Smith was the NJCAA DI Women’s Player of the Year and an All-American at Hutchinson Community College as a freshman in 2023-24.
Smith helped guide the program to its first-ever national championship, averaging 17.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She shot 56% from the field and 44% from 3-point range.
