The Hutchinson High School Salthawk girls and boys basketball teams played road games Tuesday at the Eagles Nest in Maize.
The Salthawk girls improved to 13-5 with a 43-34 victory over the Maize Eagles, who dropped to 5-14.
The Hutchinson boys lost to Maize 58-48. The Salthawk boys dropped to 9-9. The Maize Eagle boys improved to 14-5.
The Hutchinson varsity girls trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter but took a 19-15 halftime lead.
Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter and Hutchinson led 32-28 at the end of the frame. Hutchinson outscored the Eagles 11-6 in the fourth quarter.
Kohlbie Craft scored 17 points to lead the Salthawks. She scored 11 points in the second half, including 7 in the fourth quarter.
Tenley Keeton added 9 points for the Salthawks. Maize’s defense focused on shutting down Hutchinson’s leading scorers Grace Posch and Kaia Smith, who scored 6 and 2 points.
“It was kind of a slugfest tonight, but we took down Maize on the road with a 9-point win,” said Hutchinson High School girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst. “We saw a triangle-and-two (defense) almost the whole game. Kohlbie Craft stepped up huge with 17 points to lead the way.”
In the Hutchinson-Maize boys game, Maize led 14-11 after one quarter, 27-23 at halftime and 41-38 after three quarters.
Maize scored the first 8 points of the fourth quarter and outscored the Salthawks 17-10 in the final period, including a technical foul that resulted in a 6-point play.
Taishaun Govain led the Salthawks with 12 points. Levi Kepler scored 11, Lamar Govain 10, Terrell King 8, Jalen Crable 5 and Danny Boone 2.
Alan Hanna led Maize with 15 points.
“We had four possessions in a row where we turned the ball over (in the fourth quarter),” said Hutchinson boys basketball coach Bryan Miller during his radio postgame interview. “We’ve got to do a better job.”
The Salthawk girls and boys play their final regular-season games at Andover on Thursday and Salina South on Friday.
The Hutchinson girls lost to Andover in the sub-state finals in 2024.
Tuesday high school basketball games
• The Buhler High School girls basketball team defeated Winfield 60-35 on the road Tuesday night at Winfield.
Buhler led 13-8 after one quarter, 36-17 at halftime and 44-20 at the end of the third quarter. Buhler outscored the Vikings 16-15 in the final quarter.
• The Buhler boys lost to Winfield 59-54 Tuesday night at Winfield.
Winfield led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 34-19 at halftime. Buhler outscored the Vikings 35-25 in the second half.
The Buhler boys fell to 6-13.
• The Halstead Dragon girls defeated Hoisington 63-27 Tuesday night at Hoisington.
The Dragons led the Cardinals 19-4 at the end of the first quarter, 26-10 at halftime and 46-23 at the end of the third quarter.
• The Halstead boys fell to Hoisington 69-48 Tuesday night.
Hoisington led 18-13 after one quarter, 37-23 at halftime and 59-34 at the end of the third quarter.
The Halstead boys dropped to 7-13 and Hoisington is 11-9.
• The Sterling girls basketball team defeated Sedgwick 53-38 at the Sterling High School gym and the Sterling boys rolled past Sedgwick 64-28.
The Black Bear girls’ bench outscored the Sedgwick bench 23-6.
Aleya Ravenstein led the Sterling girls wit 17 points. Julia Wohh;er and Carli Wilkey each scored 7.
Boston Ekart led the Sterling boys with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Blake Smith scored 9 points, Zane Farney 7, Zach Dashiell 7 and Wyatt Newberry 6.
• The Hutchinson Central Christian Cougar boys basketball team defeated Otis-Bison 58-49 in a Class 1A Dighton sub-state quarterfinal game Tuesday night at Otis.
• The Little River boys basketball team defeated Goessel 65-29 in a Class 1A sub-state quarterfinal basketball game Tuesday.
Little River will travel to Colony-Crest Monday for a semifinal matchup.
• The Burrton Chargers boys basketball season ended with a 58-20 loss to Altoona-Midway in a Kansas Class 1A Elyria Christian sub-state game.
• The Reno County Homeschool Sabre girls defeated the Wichita Defenders 48-37 on Senior Night in Partridge.
• Fairfield’s Connor Fowler passed the 1,000 career point mark in the Falcons’ season-ending 77-41 loss to Kiowa County Tuesday night at Greensburg in Class 1A sub-state play.
Fowler is the third player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
Fowler finished his senior season with a stat line of 20.1 points, 7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.1 steals a game. He shot 52.5% from the floor and collected seven double doubles.
Fowler scored a school-record 46 points in Fairfield’s 72-26 win over Chase on Jan. 27.
Kiowa County’s Brock Deterding also passed the 1,000-point milestone in the game. He scored 35 points against Fairfield, including an 8-for-14 effort from 3-point range.
3A sub-state games Thursday, Friday
• The Haven girls basketball team will host Marysville at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Class 3A Halstead sub-state.
• The Haven boys basketball team will host Riley County at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Class 3A Halstead sub-state.
• The Halstead girls will host Smoky Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Class 3A Halstead sub-state.
• The Halstead boys will play at Wichita Collegiate at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Class 3A Halstead sub-state.
• The Nickerson girls will play Colby at 5 p.m. Thursday at Colby in the first round of the Class 3A sub-state tournament.
• The Nickerson boys will play at Lakin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Class 3A sub-state tournament.
Monday high school basketball games
In Monday night 1A girls sub-state games, the Cunningham girls survived and advanced with a 41-37 win over Deerfield (Attica sub-state).
The season came to an end for the Fairfield and Pretty Prairie girls teams at the 1A Kiowa County sub-state. Fairfield lost to South Central 63-26 and Pretty Prairie lost to Pratt-Skyline 49-44.
In the 1A boys sub-state at Kiowa County, Pretty Prairie defeated Pratt-Skyline 39-36.
In the 1A girls sub-state at Canton-Galva, Burden Central defeated Oxford 36-26. Burden Central will play at Little River in the sub-state semifinals on Saturday.
In other boys games of interest to area teams, Andale defeated Wichita Collegiate 67-46, Towanda-Circle defeated McPherson 66-51 and Lyons defeated Minneapolis 45-41.
In regular-season girls games, McPherson defeated Circle 52-36 and Minneapolis defeated Lyons 64-22.
No. 21 Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team sweeps DMACC
The No. 21 Hutchinson Community College baseball team improved to 9-0 with a doubleheader sweep Tuesday against Des Moines Area Community College at Hobart Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.
The Blue Dragons defeated DMACC 13-3 in a six-inning run-rule game in the first game and won the second game 6-5.
In Game 2, CJ Reid belted a two-run homer in a four-run bottom of the fifth for the Blue Dragons. DMACC plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at 5-5.
Hutchinson’s Adam Mustow broke up a 5-5 tie on the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to center field. Mustow drove in HutchCC’s first run with a ground-rule RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
Two DMACC batters reached base in the top of the seventh inning but Hutchinson pitcher Colin Flores went strikeout-groundout-strikeout to preserve the Blue Dragons’ 5-4 victory.
The Blue Dragons host a doubleheader Thursday against Coffeyville and Saturday at Coffeyville. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
Des Moines Area CC (5-8) plays a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Butler Community College.
Halstead alumnus Dominique Schutte honored by KCAC
Ottawa University’s Dominique Schutte, a Halstead High School alumnus, was named Freshman of the Year by the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Schutte leads the Ottawa team in scoring (and all KCAC freshmen) at 11.4 points a game and averages 2.9 assists a game. She leads the KCAC in 3-pointers made (77).
Sterling College’s Korynn Clason was named to the all-KCAC First Team and Alissa Heskamp was named to the Third Team. Clason was named KCAC Women’s Player of the Year. She averaged 22 points a game.
Tabor College’s Alyvia Owens, a graduate student from Hutchinson, was named to the Second Team.
Ottawa’s Nora Ford earned honorable mention recognition and Ottawa’s Abbie Sextro also was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Halstead senior Kahlyn Davis to compete in track at Butler CC
Halstead High School senior Kahlynn Davis singed a letter of intent to continue her academic career and compete in track and field at Butler Community College in El Dorado.
Davis is ranked second on the all-time girls track records in javelin (116 feet, 1 inch), fifth in discus (111-4) and ninth all-time shot put (27-3 1/2)
In addition to track, Davis also competes on the Halstead Dragon wrestling team and qualified for the 4A state girls wrestling tournament at 130 pounds with a 25-5 record.
