No. 1 Blue Dragon women rout Pratt, Ontjes notches win No. 499

The No. 1 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team posted its 89th victory in 100 meetings with a 92-47 victory over Pratt Community College Saturday afternoon at Dennis Lesh Sports Arena in Pratt.

The Hutchinson women now are 16-0 overall and 10-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Pratt fell to 6-9 overall (1-8 KJCCC).

The Blue Dragon women ran their winning streak to 53 consecutive games, including last year’s 37-0 run to the NJCAA Division I women’s national championship. Hutchinson has 38 straight Jayhawk Conference games.

John Ontjes now has 499 victories (96 losses) as Hutchinson women’s coach, including a 33-3 record against Pratt. The Blue Dragon now have won 20 consecutive games over Pratt since losing in 2015.

The Blue Dragons led the Beavers 26-8 at the end of the first quarter, 52-12 at halftime and 72-26 at the end of the third quarter. Pratt outscored HutchCC 21-20 in the fourth quarter.

Twelve Blue Dragons scored.

Hailey Jackson led the Blue Dragons with 20 points. Katie Duncan and Landon Forbes each scored 15 points. Duncan had 3 rebounds. Kahlen Norris contributed 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals.

Carly Dameron scored 8 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and blocked 1 shot. Jada Pleasant scored 6 points and had 3 assists.

Brynne Katcher had 5 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists. Zhane Singer scored 4 points. Madi Denison had 4 points and 4 assists.

Honey Cooney scored 2 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and had 3 assists. Noelle Anthon and Jaden Wilson each scored 2 points.

Pratt was paced by La’Kyra Johnson with 14 points and 6 rebounds. MaKiya Humphrey added 13 points and Tyriana Stanford 12.

Ontjes could get career victory No. 500 Wednesday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena against the Seward County Community College Saints. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.

Hutchinson plays Dodge City Community College at 1 p.m. next Saturday (Jan. 18) at the DC3 Student Events Center in Dodge City.
