The Hutchinson Salthawk varsity girls and boys basketball teams swept the Campus Colts Tuesday night at Haysville.
The Hutchinson girls improved to 3-0 with a 50-17 victory over the Colts.
The Hutchinson Salthawk boys improved to 2-1 with a 57-25 victory over Campus. Running clocks were used in the fourth quarters of both games.
In the varsity girls game, Hutchinson led 16-2 at the end of the first quarter, 27-7 at halftime and 42-10 at the end of the third quarter. The Salthawks outscored the Colts 8-7 in the fourth quarter.
Hutchinson’s Kaia Smith, a 6-foot-1 senior, led all scorers with 16 points. She scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter.
Sophomore Tenley Keeton came off the bench to score 10 points for Hutchinson. Grace Posch added 9, Ava Krone 7, Lily Rodriguez 3, Kate Jackson 3 and Kohlbie Craft 2.
“We play Ark City Friday night at home to wrap up the pre-break schedule,” said Hutchinson girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst. “We will need to be ready to play. They are very good.”
Addison Wood led the Campus varsity girls with 7 points.
In the varsity boys game, Hutchinson led Campus 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and 24-16 at halftime. The Salthawks outscored the Colts 22-4 in the third quarter to lead 46-20 at the end of the frame. Hutchinson outscored the Colts 11-5 in the final quarter.
“We struggled in the first half and made a lot of turnovers,” said Hutchinson nboys coach Bryan Miller during his postgame radio interview. “Our defensive effort all night was pretty good. We dominated n the glass in the second half.”
Tashaun Govain led the Salthawks with 11 points. He was the only player for both teams in double figures.
Lucas Whitt scored 9 points. Lamar Govain and Levi Kepler each scored 8 points and Danny Boone 7.
Cameron Moore led Campus with 8 points.
The Salthawk teams will host Arkansas City Friday night at the Salthawk Activity Center in the final games of the 2024 season before Christmas break.
Hutchinson returns to action in 2025 with road games Jan. 7 at Maize South and Jan. 10 at Salina South. The first home dates after the Christmas break are Jan. 17 against Great Bend and Jan. 21 against Derby.
Hutchinson won the JV girls game over Campus 31-26. Campus won the JV boys game 54-36, the C team girls game 42-26 and the freshman boys game 74-30.
Buhler boys swim team wins Hutchinson meet, Salthawks place sixth
The Buhler High School boys swim team captured first place at the Hutchinson Invitational Tuesday at the Hutchinson YMCA pool.
Buhler placed first with 535 points, followed by Garden City 336, Goddard Eisenhower 242, McPherson 222, Rose Hill 220, Hutchinson 211, Dodge City 178.5, Great Bend 111.5 and Bennington 33.

Buhler varsity girls down McPherson, Crusader boys fall to McPherson
The Buhler varsity girls and boys basketball teams split their games Tuesday night at the McPherson Roundhouse.
Buhler won the varsity girls game 55-44 and McPherson won the varsity boys game 70-30.
It was the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III opener for both Buhler and McPherson.
The score at the end of the first quarter in the girls game was 15-15. Buhler led at halftime at 26-22 and 39-32 at the end of the third quarter. The Crusader girls outscored McPherson 16-12 in the fourth quarter.
Buhler was paced by 5-foot-9 senior Natalya Krafels with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Charley Baxter scored 9 points, grabbed 8 boards and had 4 steals. Gracie Oard had 9 points, 4 assists and 8 steals. Nyah Sewell added 8 points and 6 rebounds.
Brooke Doile led the Bullpups with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Maryn Sandbo added 8 points.
In the varsity boys game, McPherson led Buhler 8-7 at the end of the first quarter, 38-14 at halftime and 56-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Julian Morrison led the Buhler Crusader boys with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Mitchell McDaniel scored 6 points and grabbed 4 boards. Asher Zachary added 5 points and 5 rebounds.
Luke Holmberg scored 4 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Reuben Harder scored 3 points and Jared Miller 1.
Gabe Pyle led the McPherson Bullpups with 17 points and Jett pole scored 15. Ian Razak scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Bishop Brown added 4 points and 7 rebounds.
The Buhler girls and boys host Mulvane Friday to wrap up the first semester. The Crusaders return to action Jan. 10 at home against Towanda-Circle.
Haven girls, boys sweep Nickerson to stay unbeaten
The Haven girls and boys basketball teams, both champions of the Kingman Eagle Classic tournament, swept the Nickerson Panthers Tuesday at the Haven High School gymnasium.
The Haven girls basketball team defeated Nickerson 60-4 and the Wildcat boys prevailed 62-28.
The Haven Wildcat varsity girls and boys teams both sport 5-0 records.
Haven led 22-0 at the end of the third quarter, 39-0 at halftime and 49-4 at the end of the third quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 11-0 in the fourth quarter.
Avery Brawner led host Wildcats with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Sienna DeFrain scored 14 points, Hallie Williams contributed 9 points.
In the varsity boys game, Haven led the Panthers 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, 32-16 at halftime and 56-23 at the end of the third quarter. With a running clock in use, Haven outscored Nickerson 6-5 in the fourth quarter.
The Haven girls and boys play at Belle Plaine Friday night in the Wildcats’ last action before the Christmas break. The Wildcats open second semester play Jan. 7 at Norton and Jan. 10 at Nickerson.
The Nickerson varsity girls and boys teams will play again Jan. 3 at home against Cheney.
The Haven girls JV team, boys JV team and boys C team also won their games against Nickerson Tuesday night.
Haven senior Dalton Bontrager was selected as the Ad Astra Athlete of Week Wednesday for helping the Wildcats win the Kingman Eagle Classic.
Bontrager averaged 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.3 assists a game as Haven defeated Meade, Kingman and Great Bend by an average of 26 points. He averages 11 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.8 assists a game this season.
Hutchinson Trinity Celtic girls, boys fall to Classical School of Wichita
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic girls and boys basketball teams were swept at home Tuesday night by Classical School of Wichita.
The Celtic girls lost 50-36 and the Trinity boys lost 62-51.
Alex Suter-Tan led the Trinity Celtics girls with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 1 blocked shot. Eilley Cost scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Trinity girls and boys teams wrapped up the first semester. The Celtics play at Sterling on Jan. 7. The Celtics host Marion on Jan. 10 and Ell-Saline on Jan. 14.
Inman basketball teams 3-3 against Kingman
The Inman High School basketball teams won three games and lost three games Tuesday night at home against Kingman.
The varsity girls defeated the Kingman Eagles 68-36 and the Teuton varsity boys lost 4744. The junior varsity girls won 44-42 and the JV boys were edged out 38-37. The C team boys won 44-42 and the C team girls lost 16-10.
In other Hutchinson Tribune area boys games, the Hutchinson Central Christian Cougars lost to Macksville 61-51, Sterling defeated Hoisington 62-40, Cunningham defeated Argonia 77-37, Andale defeated Rose Hill 67-41 and Lyons defeated Sedgwick 73-32.
In other area girls games, the Hutchinson Central Christian Cougars lost to Macksville 50-44, Fairfield lost to Wichita Central Christian Academy 40-30 and Sterling lost to Hoisington 51-39.
Halstead basketball teams split with Hillsboro at home
The Halstead High School girls basketball team defeated Hillsboro 37-28 Tuesday night at the Halstead gymnasium and the Hillsboro boys fought off Halstead 77-66.
The Halstead girls led 12-8 at the end of the second quarter and 20-19 at halftime. The Dragons trailed 28-26 at the end of the third quarter and outscored the Trojans 11-0 in the fourth quarter.
In the varsity boys game, Hillsboro led 31-20 after the first quarter, 49-42 at halftime and 64-56 at the end of the third quarter. The Trojans outscored the Dragons 13-10 in the second half.
The Halstead girls and boys basketball teams host Smoky Valley. The Dragons open the 2025 portion of their schedule Jan. 7 at Abilene.
CKL ‘H’ teams top KBCA Class 3A girls rankings
Three of the five Central Kansas League schools starting with the letter “H” — Hesston, Halstead and Haven — are 1-2-3 in Class 3A girls the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings released Wednesday.
Halstead and Haven are the only ranked Hutchinson Tribune area girls teams
The top-ranked girls teams in the KBCA poll are Blue Valley North, 6A; Topeka Seaman, 5A; Wellington, Class 4A; Hesston, Class 3A; Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Class 2A; Little River Class 1A Division I; and Hanover, Class 1A Division II.
Area teams ranked in the KBCA boys poll are Haven, fifth in Class 3A; and Sterling, second in Class 2A.
The top-ranked boys teams are Shawnee Mission Northwest, Class 6A; Kapaun-Mount Carmel, Class 5A; Baldwin, Class 4A; Wichita Collegiate, Class 3A; Moundridge, Class 2A; South Central, Class 1A Division I; and Cunningham Class 1A Division II.
Buhler wrestlers compete at Douglass, Great Bend
The Buhler High School varsity boys wrestling team competed in the Douglass Tournament Saturday.
Cruz Hershberger placed second, losing to the top wrestler in his weight class in the state
Freshman Jacob Burklow placed third and Luke Kerns took fourth.
The Buhler girls wrestling team competed at the Great Bend Christmas Clash on Saturday.
Lillie Ledford took fourth out of 30 girls in her weight class, 14 of which are state ranked.
Macey Parks took ninth out of 30 girls in her weight class.
KJCCC Players of the Week: HutchCC’s Hailey Jackson, Highland’s Cameron McNamara
Hutchinson Community College’s Hailey Jackson and Highland Community College’s Cameron McNamara were named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division I and II Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for Week 7.
Jackson, the Blue Dragons’ sophomore forward, had a pair of big games for top-ranked Hutchinson as part of a 2-0 week with wins over Garden City and Cloud County.
For the week, Jackson averaged 24 points per game while shooting 56% overall and 5-of-9 from the foul line in addition to grabbing 9 rebounds per game.
Against Garden City, Jackson had 25 points and went 12-for-12 from the foul line, including three free throws to tie and take the lead with 1.5 seconds remaining in a 46-45 win.
Against Cloud County, Jackson had her fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 77-53 road victory.
McNamara had another outstanding week for the Highland Scotties, leading HCC to a pair of wins to finish out the 2024 calendar year with a 14-0 record.
Emporia will host Kansas Shrine Bowl football in 2026, 2027, 2028
The Shrine Bowl of Kansas Inc. Board of Directors has announced a new multi-year partnership with Emporia and Emporia State University to host the 2026, 2027 and 2028 Kansas Shrine Bowl games.
The annual East vs. West all-star football game, which began in 1974, is scheduled to be played on the fourth Saturday in June starting in 2026 at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University in Emporia.
Game dates will be Saturday, June 27, 2026, Saturday, June 26, 2027, and Saturday, June 24, 2028.
The 2025 Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth is scheduled to be played Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Dodge City.
“We are thrilled and honored that Emporia has been selected to host the Kansas Shrine Bowl from 2026 to 2028. This is a testament to our community’s dedication to fostering excellence in sports and hospitality,” stated LeLan Dains, Visit Emporia director.
“We can’t wait to showcase Emporia’s vibrant community and provide an unforgettable experience for players, fans and everyone involved.”
The 2025 Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth is scheduled to be played on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Dodge City.
The East team will continue to hold its team training camp at Ottawa University. Tthe West team will host its team training camp at Hutchinson Community College starting in 2025.
The 2024 Kansas Shrine Bowl in Emporia resulted in a $150,000 donation to benefit Shriners Children’s Hospitals, the second largest single-year contribution in the 51-year history of the organization.
That contribution was also made possible in part due to the success of the inaugural Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Shrine Duals, which will return to Newman University in Wichita for the second annual event on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
Buhler boys swim team 4th at Andover Invitational
The Buhler High School boys swim team placed fourth out of 13 teams at the Andover Invitational Saturday.
