Three Hutchinson churches will host a “Blue Christmas” worship service on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E 30th Ave. The event is open to the community.
The service is a collaboration between Emmanuel Lutheran, Grace Episcopal, and First Presbyterian.
In a press release, Emmanuel Lutheran pastor Lisa Simmelink said, “Although we often think of the holidays as a time of joy, celebration, and fellowship with family and friends, for some, the Christmas season means anxiety, stress and isolation. By working together, our congregations hope to provide a meaningful service for the community and an experience of solace and comfort for those having a hard time.”
A Blue Christmas service is held on or near the year’s longest night, the Winter Solstice, and “is to provide hope and healing for those experiencing grief, loss, or other difficult life situations during the holiday season.”
The churches hope the service becomes an annual event, with the location rotating each year.

Last night’s service was a very nice addition to our community. Most people are carrying something difficult – death of a loved one, job loss, fear about the present or the future, health problems. This was a place to “come as you are”, and to be able to acknowledge the painful emotions you are feeling in the midst of what can feel like a relentlessly happy holiday season. The lighting of the candles, the beautiful music, the thoughtfully chosen prayers, and optional communion provided some comfort, and allowed attendees to participate as little or as much as they felt they would like to. The pastors were available to those who wanted a quiet moment to share what brought them and to receive prayer – quite a few people sought this, though, again, it was completely optional. I appreciate that you covered this event in advance, and would love to see something more about it prior to next year’s event.
