Buhler High School brought home the boys and girls team championships from the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division 3 competition Thursday at the Clearwater Country Club course.
The Crusaders also swept the junior varsity boys and girls team titles.
The Buhler varsity boys have won seven straight league cross country meets and the Crusader girls have won back-to-back league championships.
The Buhler varsity boys team placed first with 33 points, followed by McPherson 49, Augusta 62, Winfield 96 and Mulvane 105. The Buhler varsity girls team placed first with 37 points, followed by Augusta 58, McPherson 71, Winfield 83, Circle 110 and Mulvane 148.
Buhler’s Curtis Morgan was named AVCTL Division 3 Co-Coach of the Year.
“I was proud of all of the kids and how they did at a very competitive meet,” Morgan said. The kids performed as well as they could have yesterday. We had talked about being mentally tough pushing through the tough Kansas wind and these athletes took it head on. Ben Gazaway had maybe the toughest race I have ever seen from him. He won the individual gold in the JV Boys race with a career best time, while running on a broken toe.
“We knew McPherson was going to be a tough out on the varsity boys side and early on things weren’t in our favor. However, with a late push our 4,5,6 and 7 runners all found a way to move up and gain some valuable points for us.
“The varsity girls have been just rolling along lately, but we knew Augusta had a very talented squad also and would give us a good challenge. Our girls ran comfortably through the first mile and really tried to push hard in the second and third. In the end having put 5 in the top 12 spots really helped us control the team standings.”
