Artist Jim Almrud finds freedom in watercolor sunsets

“I’m not really an artist,” Jim Almrud said, standing next to his submission at the Hutchinson Art Center’s Members Art Show. “I’m always a student. There are certain things I like, such as landscapes.”

Almrud is one of several art center members whose works are on display in the Main Gallery through Nov. 18.

He began painting watercolors around ten years ago and has continued to refine his technique. “I had a basic [watercolor] kit and watched a little video to learn. Then I went to an art class, and they told me to get better materials,” he said, laughing.

Almrud’s art show submission, “Western Sunset,” reflects storm clouds set against a vivid orange sky with a windmill and tree silhouettes in the foreground.

“I’ve gone from being very tight to being more loose and free with my technique,” he said.

Almrud has friends in many countries to whom he sent photos of the painting.

“Friends in Austral said it looks like the outback. Friends in South Africa said it looked familiar to them, too.”

Many of the members show paintings are for sale. “Western Sunset” is being offered at $250. Almrud smiled when he read the label and said, “I usually make the prices high so that they don’t sell so that I can give them away as gifts.”

The members show is open to the public. Memberships are available at the Hutchinson Art Center at 405 N Washington St. and on the center’s website. Several membership levels are available for individuals and businesses, but each includes a ten percent gift shop discount and the opportunity to display and sell artwork. Memberships also support community outreach and education.

The center is open Mon. from noon to 5 p.m., Tue. through Sat. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Sundays. For more information and to inquire about memberships, classes, and other events and activities, the center’s phone number is (620) 663-1081, and the email is hac@hutchinsonartcenter.net.
