The KSHSAA Board of Directors voted Wednesday to allow its member schools to play 23 regular-season games starting in the 2025-2026 season.
Basketball will follow the trail blazed by baseball and softball last spring when the season increased from 20 games to 26.
The decision by the KSHSAA Board of Directors to increase the number of basketball games passed with a 36-25 vote.
“I am very excited about the KSHSAA vote to expand our regular season game limit from 20 to 23,” said Derby High School boys basketball coach Brett Flory on his X / Twitter page.
“The willingness of Kyle Doperalski (KSHSAA assistant executive director for basketball) to listen to coaches and schools wanting to improve the high school basketball product in Kansas has been a breath of fresh air and is very appreciated.”
Other items recently passed by KSHSAA’s Board of Directors include tennis athletes who can compete in one outside competition during the school season.
Events must be approved in advance, and a request must be sent to KSHSAA from the member school.
In baseball and softball, an athlete can now participate in 32 total games during the regular season.
In girls and boys wrestling, athletes can participate in no more than four events (a combination of double dual, quad, triple dual and/or one-day tournament) that start before 3 p.m. for each gender.
This is effective beginning this winter.
