HutchCC football team stays at No. 1, women’s soccer squad is 17th

The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons (3-0), who in the last two weeks have defeated No. 2 (formerly No. 1) Iowa Western 38-37 and No. 15 (formerly No. 12) Iowa Central 33-30 in overtime, are the No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division I football poll for the second week in a row.

Garden City Community College (2-1) is ranked No. 11. Butler Community College (2-1) is tied for 14th with Northwest Mississippi Community College.

In the latest NJCAA Division I women’s soccer poll, Hutchinson is ranked 17th with a 4-1-2 record. Butler CC is ranked sixth at 5-0-2, Kansas City Kansas ninth (6-0-1) and Cowley County (3-2).

In the DII women’s soccer poll, Neosho County (3-2) is ranked 16th.

In the latest NJCAA Division I volleyball poll released on Monday, Barton Community College and Colby Community College are fifth and sixth. Florida Southwestern State College is ranked No. 1.

Cowley County Community College and Johnson County Community are first and second in the latest NJCAA Division II volleyball poll released on Monday. Kansas City Kansas Community College moved up from 32rd to 18th.

Buhler girls golf team 2nd at Wellington Invitational

The Buhler varsity girls golf team finished second at the Wellington Invitational Monday at the par-70 Wellington Golf Club.

Wellington won the tournament with a 348 score, followed by Buhler 374, Winfield 397, Goddard 399, Andover Central 399, Towanda-Circle 430, Andale 436, Arkansas City 447 and Mulvane 455.

Buhler’s Anika Paulsrud placed second and Macy Miller eighth and earned medals. Paulsrud carded a 77 and Miller 92.

Buhler’s Addison Specht, Juliette Shank and Paityn Weber placed 17th, 18th and 19th with scores of 102, 103 and 104. Harlie Terrell tied for 21st with a 106 score.

Maecy Rosenberger placed 30th with a 109 score. Madalyn Bohring tied for 39th at 112. Ellie Goering tied for 46th at 117. Gracin Bergmeier finished 55th at 123.

Wellington golfers placed first, third and sixth. Taryn Voramontes won the first-place medal with a 73, Claire Ginter was third at 82 and Presley Cornejo was sixth at 87. 

At the Pratt Invitational Monday, Nickerson High School’s Hannah Heinz placed 23rd with a nine-hole score of 60. Teammate Jillian Hartman tied for 29th with a 69.

Pratt won the team title with a 192 score and Pratt’s Anastin Teasley won the first-pace individual medal with a 43. The Greenbacks placed four golfers in the top seven and five in the top 15.

Pretty Prairie won the Pratt Junior Varsity Invitational with a 121 score. Pretty Prairie’s Lyndsey Hoyt placed first with a 56 and teammate Jewelynn Reese finished fourth with a 65.

Fairfield Falcons football team off to 2-0 start

The Fairfield Falcons (Kansas Eight-Man Division II) are 2-0 for the first time since 2013 after defeating Pratt-Skyline 30-12 last Friday night at Langdon.

The Falcons are guided by second-year head coach Kyle Finder.

The program’s last winning season was in 2014.

The Falcons host the Reno County Sabres homeschool team next Friday. The Sabres, also 2-0, defeated Norwich 66-44 last Friday.

Despite the 2-0 record, Fairfield is not listed in Eight-Man II by KSHSAA Covered’s Week 2 rankings released on Sunday. Hutchinson Central Christian (1-1) is listed among “others.”

Buhler (2-0) is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A. The Hutchinson Salthawks (1-1) are listed among “others” in Class 5A. The Inman Teutons (2-0) are listed among “others” in Class 1A. Little River (2-0) is ranked third in Eight-Man I.

The No. 1 teams in each class are Derby (2-0), 6A; Blue Valley (2-0), 5A; Andover Central (2-0), 4A; Topeka Hayden (2-0), 3A; Norton (2-0), 2A; Conway Springs (2-0), 1A; Hoxie (2-0), Eight-Man I; Axtell (2-0), Eight-Man II; and Cunningham (2-0), Six-Man.

Hutchinson Trinity boys, Buhler boys and girls cross country teams ranked

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic boys cross country team is ranked second in Class 2A in the Kansas Cross County Coaches Jim Maska Early Season Poll released on Monday morning.

The Buhler boys are ranked second in Class 4A and the Crusader girls are ranked fourth.

The Sterling girls cross country team is ranked seventh in Class 2A.
