Don and Susan Cameron, two long-time educators in Buhler USD 313, were involved in an accident in Lenexa, Kan., causing Susan to die at the scene and Don to sustain severe injuries Saturday afternoon.

That’s according to a Facebook Post and interview with The Hutchinson Tribune from Superintendent Cindy Couchman.

“Don and Susan Cameron were involved in a car accident in Lenexa,” Couchman wrote. “Susan died at the scene and Don was hospitalized with some critical injuries.  Please keep the Cameron’s in your prayers as Don recovers and the family struggles to process the sudden death of their mom and grandma.”

Couchman said Susan was a first-grade teacher who taught at Union Valley Elementary School before she retired, and Don was the head boy’s basketball coach for Buhler High School and a school administrator.

Susan’s father, Bob Burkholder, was a superintendent of the school district and namesake of the district’s administration center, the Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.

“Both Susan and Don touched countless lives in our community,” Couchman wrote. “Please join us in lifting up the family in prayer as they process this tragic death and pray for Don’s full recovery.  Once the family has more information on Don’s recovery timeline, a funeral day/time will be set.”
