Haven rolls past Hillsboro in opener 51-13

The Haven Wildcats rolled to a 51-13 victory over Hillsboro in their season opener Friday night at Haven.

Haven led 14-7 after one quarter and 28-7 at halftime. The Wildcats then tacked on 9 points and the third quarter and 14 in the fourth quarter. The Trojans scored 6 points in the third quarter.

Haven’s Aiden Hoopes caught three touchdown passes (41, 46 and 7 yards) from quarterback Nash Wray, who added 1-yard TD run. Vance Loop scored two TDs (14 yards and 1 yard) in the first quarter.

Cole Brawner added a 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Haven kicker Kolten Altvater kicked a 42-yard field goal and was 6-of-7 on extra point kicks.

Haven rolled up 425 yards in total offense (185 passing and 240 rushing) and held the Trojans to 174 yards of total offense (29 passing and 145 rushing).

Nash Wray completed 9-of-17 passes for 157 yards and 3 TDs and rushed for 166 yards on 11 carries and another TD. 

Brogan Wray competed 1-of-3 passes for 28 yards.

Vance Loop had 56 yards rushing on 15 carries and 1 TD. Brawner had 16 yards on 11 carries with 1 TD.

Hoopes caught 4 passes for 131 yards and three TDs. Grant Patry caught 3 passes for 32 yards.

Dakota Arndt and Patry each had 8 tackles for the Wildcats.

Jesiah Gooch rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries for the Trojans with 1 TD.

Hillsboro quarterback Zayne Haslett completed 7-of-19 passes for 29 yards. Luke Wichert caught 1 pass for 17 yards.

Haven will host Nickerson in a Central Kansas League game next Friday. Hillsboro plays at Larned next Friday.

Reno County Sabres 52, Stafford 26

The Reno County Sabres homeschool football team defeated Stafford 52-26 in an eight-man game at Stafford.

The Sabres led 16-0 on Thursday when the game was suspended because of rain. The game was resumed Saturday and the Sabres outscored the Trojans 36-10.

Sabres’ sophomore quarterback Bo Smith completed 9-of-15 passes for 152 yards, 4 TDs and 0 interceptions and rushed 113 yards on 11 carries, including three more TDs. Jett Smith caught 6 passes for 111 yards and 3 TDs.

The Sabres (1-0), who play all of their games on the road because they don’t have a home field, will play at Norwich (1-0) on Friday. Norwich defeated Pratt-Skyline 54-6 its season opener.

In Hutchinson Tribune area football games last Friday night, Hutchinson High School lost to Andover Central 37-7, Halstead lost to Hesston 21-14, Buhler defeated Mulvane 28-7, Inman defeated Hutchinson Trinity Catholic 15-0, Haven blasted Hillsboro 51-13, Fairfield defeated Hartford 54-26, Halstead lost to Hesston 21-14, Sterling lost to Sedgwick 42-13, Pretty Prairie lost to Lyndon 50-0 and Nickerson lost to Conway Springs 42-0.

In Hutchinson Tribune area football games played on Saturday, Hutchinson Central Christian lost to Sunrise Christian Academy 54-50 (eight-man) and Burrton defeated Southern Coffey County 26-21 (six-man).

Next Friday, Central Christian (1-0) plays at Canton-Galva (1-0) and Burrton (1-0) plays at Altoona-Midway (0-1).
