LETTER: Probst came through when it mattered

If you are considering voting for Kyler Sweely, or considering not voting at all, I humbly ask you to reconsider.

We need Jason Probst working for us. He lives with us and works for us, even when he is not in the legislature.

I have told this story many times, and I will tell it as many times as it takes. I have a dear friend who is alive today because of Jason Probst. About a year and a half ago, my friend Tony received a letter saying his Medicaid had been discontinued because of a $54 increase in his Social Security disability payment. Tony has melanoma and needs monthly immunotherapy for the rest of his life to keep the cancer from returning. Those treatments, which would cost tens of thousands of dollars each month, were covered by Medicaid. When the letter came, we all panicked, knowing he would not live long without them.

Jason was the only person I knew who might know what to do, so I called him and told him the situation. He said, “Let me make a phone call.”

Within days, Tony got a call from someone in Topeka reassuring him that his Medicaid would be reinstated. Within two weeks, a letter came saying it had been. He made it to his next treatment, and he is still with us, giving us trouble and making us laugh. We owe that to Jason’s willingness to help someone he didn’t even know.

Around the same time, Jason heard that the Reno County Farmers Market was struggling to raise money for live music. He wrote a check for $1,000, a quarter of the annual cost.

Jason bleeds blue and gold, and he deserves the seat he is running for. Have you seen his opponent having dinner in a Hutchinson restaurant, visiting with locals in coffee shops, shopping in our grocery stores? Who do you want representing you and your family in Topeka?

We are so often handed the old “lesser of two evils” choice. This time, we have a real option. Let’s make it count!
