The right to vote for Kansas Supreme Court justices may sound like a good amendment, but it’s not. It would put our fair and impartial justice system at risk. Our current selection process prioritizes legal qualifications, accountability and independence. It is transparent and trusted.
The Kansas Supreme Court is the most powerful check we have on Topeka politicians. If Justices become elected politicians, that check will be lost. Currently two of the three branches of government are elected politicians. Campaigns are expensive, and donors usually expect something in return for their contributions.
We need to keep our Supreme Court justices independent with their rulings based on our Kansas Constitution and not beholden to any person, party, or special interest group. Please help save our democracy by voting “No” on Aug. 4.
