Gregory Dean McCurry, husband, father and rancher, left his earthly home June 19, 2026. Greg was born June 13, 1957, at Elmendorf Air Force Base, in Anchorage, Alaska, the second son of Walter Cecil McCurry and Sandra Jean Hill. Alongside his two brothers, cousins and uncles, Greg was raised to appreciate agriculture and cowboy life and worked his entire career at McCurry Brothers Angus Ranch as the third generation in the family’s angus cattle and farming operation near Mount Hope, Kansas.

Greg graduated from Burrton High School in 1975. As a youth, he developed a love for football, playing junior high through high school, both offense and defense. As a young 4-H member, Greg showed cattle, sheep and pigs. He also found his love for horses which settled in for the rest of his life. He rodeoed in high school and competed in Little Britches and open rodeos in both bull riding and bareback events.

Greg married Pam Considine on June 4, 1977. They had two children, Jesse Dean, born June 22, 1978, and Gina Marie, born Dec. 22, 1981. Being a father was one of McCurry’s greatest accomplishments as he taught his kids to appreciate agriculture and show angus cattle across the country. Both Jesse and Gina and their families currently raise angus cattle, and several of his grandchildren show angus cattle on the state and national level.

Serving as a local 4-H leader and supporter of FFA, Greg’s vested interest has always been the angus cattle industry. His grandfather, Walter McCurry, purchased his first angus cattle in 1928 from his brother-in-law, Johnson Workman. Workman’s angus herd began in 1913 with cattle from George Grant, who imported the first angus cattle to Victoria, Kansas.

Greg and Pam have lived at the original McCurry home place, where they enjoyed raising and marketing angus cattle. The McCurry Brothers Partnership hosted many sales, shows and events over the years, all dedicated to the angus breed. McCurry Brothers hosted the 2012 National Angus Conference as the first tour stop and was the host family for the National Jr Angus show in Wichita, Kansas, in 1993. The ranch also hosted Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius on the 2004 Kansas Farm Bureau Farm and Ranch Tour and has welcomed many state legislators and Kansas Senators and Congressmen for farm visits. McCurry Brothers was selected in 2019 as part of the 40-year anniversary of the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) Brand the Barn campaign, having the CAB logo painted on one of the ranch barns most visible from the highway.

Greg’s ability to evaluate sound, functional performance angus cattle put him on the invite list to judge cattle shows in more than 40 states, including many state fairs from New York to New Mexico. Highlights of Greg’s judging career included judging the National Western Stock Show with Ernie Wallace in 1997 and the 2021 National Jr. Angus show with Frank Jackson.

In 1996, McCurry Brothers Angus Ranch exhibited a Triple Crown Angus Bull, Sedgwick’s Rebar, who won the All-American Angus Futurity ROV bull show, the North American International ROV Angus bull show and the National Western Angus ROV bull show. They also owned one of the top registry sites in the breed, TC Dividend 963. Greg was elected by his peers to serve on the American Angus Association board of directors. He has served on many agriculture committees and livestock boards across the state, including the Kansas Angus Association as a past president, the Kansas Farm Service Agency Board of Directors as both a member and chair, and the Reigns of Hope Riding Academy.

On a local level, Greg was appreciated for his time spent helping in the community and mentoring others to get involved in cattle production. Greg often used his wagons, buggies and horses in local parades and displays. He and Pam hosted fundraisers for various clubs and activities in Mount Hope, including cow patty bingo at the local town festival. He was also a member of the local supper club for 20 years and was known as the mashed potato man. Greg was known to play a mean card game of gin rummy, all while making sure his grandchildren maintained good posture.

One of Greg’s many passions was reading. He was known to read an entire book in one sitting, often finishing a new book in two days time, then giving it to another family member to enjoy. McCurry also taught his children to appreciate the outdoors, looking at constellations, taking them outside often to look at Halley’s Comet, and to stop to enjoy the sunset. Many of his photos and sunset pictures posted on social media were extremely popular.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Cecil. He is survived by his mother, Sandra Hill McCurry; brother, Brad (Alicia); brother, Geoff (Lucy) of Mount Hope; wife of 49 years, Pamela Jo; and two children, Jesse (Rhonda) of Colwich, Kansas, and Gina (Ryan) of Springfield, Missouri. He’s also survived by eight grandchildren, Samuel (Katie), Mackenzie (Terran), Jackson, Anna, Wyatt, Reygan, Jett and Cora.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at WestLink/Pathway Church, 2001 N. Maize Road, Wichita, with luncheon and visitation with family to follow. Graveside service at 2 p.m., at the Mount Hope Cemetery, 28700 W. 93rd Street N., Mount Hope. Floral tributes should be delivered to the church on Friday.

Memorials in honor of Greg McCurry may be sent to your local 4-H or FFA chapter, state Junior Angus Association, or Reins of Hope, 2116 N Obee Rd, PO Box 57, Hutchinson, KS, 67504.

Arrangements by Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead, Kansas.
