HUTCHINSON—As a winter storm bore down on the area Friday, The Salvation Army of Reno County announced it would open a warming center at its 700 N. Walnut location in Hutchinson.
The warming center will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday until the current winter cold advisory for the area ends.
“Scripture directs us to do more than wishing someone to be warm and well fed,” Salvation Army Maj. Paul James said in the announcement. “It asks us to do something about it when we are able to do so.”
Residents whose pipes freeze can also visit the warming center to shower and clean up.
“We have had families come to us each of the past couple of years because their pipes have frozen and one family had a water line break,” James said. “People, they still needed a place to shower and get cleaned up until their situation gets resolved. On one occasion we worked with a family to come in while our building was closed.”
