I hope you will start thinking about the upcoming Hutchinson City Council election, Nov. 4. Your vote is important, as we will elect those that will be leading our city for the next two to four years. To those of you that think your feelings do not matter, it is much easier to influence the direction of your local government than state or national.
For me, the upcoming election is of particular importance.
- We have a somewhat new city manager who is helped by directions from community leadership.
- One of our strongest existing council members, Jon Richardson (Northwest District), is not seeking reelection. Jon should be commended for his past leadership.
I think we should re-elect the two current council members, Greg Fast and Stacy Goss. Having been in an elected office, there is a learning curve of several years before you can achieve maximum proficiency. We need the continuity of these two current members. Greg has represented not only the Southwest District, but the whole community. He has been available to all. His work in economic development should be commended and continued. While not agreeing with all Stacy has voted for, she has been available. If contacted on a matter, she always responds. She has been a particularly good mayor, conducting the meetings with proficiency. She has the city’s success at heart. Stacy is running this time for the Northwest District that has been held by Richardson. I have watched these two and they work well for the city.
The city at large district will see a new member as both men running are new to city politics. The two are Darrin Truan and Duke DeVaul. I know both. After visiting with both, I feel that Darrin Truan will best lead the city if elected to a two-year term. Darrin retired from 25 years with Hutchinson Police Department. Through that experience he has the best background to understand current city issues.
I hope you will vote on Nov. 4, and if you agree with my reasons, cast your vote as possible for Fast, Goss and Truan.
