Dayana Acevedo-Trent, the new Hutchinson Community College volleyball coach, talked about her team on the Blue Dragon Sports social media pages.
Acevedo-Trent put the 2025 Blue Dragon volleyball team members through their first official day of practice Monday.
“I’ve been waiting for this day (first day off practice) since January,” said Acevedo-Trent on Blue Dragon Sports. “Since I got here, we’ve been trying to put all the pieces together and it’s finally here. I’m very excited to see the whole team finally together.”
The Blue Dragons open the season against Salt Lake Community College and Iowa Western Aug. 22-23 at Reiver Arena in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Acevedo-Trent was named volleyball coach at Hutchinson Community College in January. Her assistant coach is Dru Kuck.
“I think we have a lot of talent. It’s just a matter of how they can come together,” said Acevedo-Trent. “That’s the exciting part of preseason — just putting the puzzle pieces together. I’m very excited about that. It’s just how we play together.
“It’s breaking down the skills and teaching them how we want to play Hutchinson volleyball and how we do things in this gym (the Hutchinson Sports Arena). It’s a mixture of teaching them the system and how they can trust each other.”
The Hutchinson CC volleyball team posted a 19-21 record last season. Acevedo-Trent posted a record of 98-29 in four years at Odessa College in Texas with two national tournament appearances and two regional championships.
Before taking the head coaching position at Odessa, Acevedo-Trent was an assistant coach at Iowa Western from 2016-2021. In 2021, Iowa Western won the NJCAA national championship.
Acevedo-Trent played volleyball at Iowa Western Community College where she won back to back All-American awards.
She transferred to the University of Texas El-Paso to finish out her playing career and earned a degree in psychology.
HutchCC competes at the McCook CC Labor Day Weekend Tournament Aug. 29-30 at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center in McCook, Neb.
Hutchinson plays its first home match and first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference match Sept. 3 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena against rival Barton Community College.
