Arrest made in Sunday armed robberies

Officers with the Hutchinson Police Department were dispatched to a business in the 500 block of East 17th Avenue for an armed robbery on July 13th, 2025, at approximately 7:19 p.m. The suspect had already left the scene when officers arrived. Officers and Reno County Sheriff’s Office deputies began searching the area.

At approximately 7:41 p.m., a second robbery occurred at a business in the 400 block of East 4th Avenue. The suspect’s description matched that of the first robbery.

At approximately 7:52 p.m., officers located the suspect vehicle from both robberies near 17th Avenue and Plum Street. A deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the driver did not comply, leading to a pursuit. The suspect crashed the vehicle into a residence in the 400 block of East 18th Avenue and fled into an occupied home, where he was apprehended.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle used by the suspect was stolen earlier that day from 1600 Center St. 

Malachi J. Sims, 23-year-old male of Hutchinson, was arrested and charged with the following:

  1. Aggravated Robbery; Dangerous Weapon (two counts)
  2. Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Felon (two counts)
  3. Theft; Property or Services; Less than $1,500 (two counts)
  4. Theft; Motor Vehicle: $1,500 to $24,999
  5. Aggravated Assault of LEO; with Deadly Weapon
  6. Aggravated Battery on LEO; Physical Contact with County Officer
  7. Aggravated Battery on LEO; Physical Contact with City Officer
  8. Aggravated Burglary; Dwelling for Felony, Flee and Elude; Commission of Felony
  9. Interference with Law Enforcement; Obstruct, Resist, Oppose; Felony Case
  10. Interference with Law Enforcement; Conceal/Alter/Destroy Evidence
  11. Felony Criminal Damage to Property; >$25,000
  12. DUI; 2nd Conviction
  13. Possession of Marijuana
  14. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  15. MVA; Failure to Report an Accident, Leave the Scene of an Accident
  16. Ignition Interlock; Operate Without
  17. Alcohol; Illegal Transportation
  18. Possession of Opiates, Narcotics, or Certain Stimulants; 1 prior conviction

Sims’ bond is set at $969,700.

All suspects are innocent unless found guilty in court.
