Hutchinson Monarchs’ winning streak is 8 straight games

The Hutchinson Monarchs now have an eight-game winning streak.

The Monarchs defeated the Haysville Aviators 8-1 on Tuesday night and the Wichita Wildcats 10-5 Monday night. Both games were played at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

Hutchinson (21-5 overall) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Haysville scored one run in the top of the second inning to cut the Monarchs’ lead to 3-1.

Hutchinson scored two runs in the bottom of the second to increase the lead to 5-1. The Monarchs scored on a based-loaded fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly by AJ Mustow.

Hutchinson scored one run on a double play in the bottom of the fourth inning, added one run in the fifth and one in the eighth for an 8-1 lead.

Ethan Giesbrecht, a former Hutchinson Community College pitcher now playing at Kansas State University, started on the mound for the Monarchs.

Giesbrecht struck out two batters in four straight innings and fanned 11 Aviators for the game. He allowed one run on three hits and walked none.

Camden Cornelius pitched the final inning for the Monarchs.

On Tuesday, Hutchinson’s AJ Mustow was named one of the Jayhawk Collegiate League’s Players of the Week for last week. Mustow  batted .500 and slugged .833 with two doubles, one triple and one double.

Hutchinson’s Carson Gonzalez was named as one of the JCL’s Pitchers of the Week on Tuesday. He posted an earned run average, held opponents to a .214 on-base percentage and struck out six batters.

On Monday, The Monarchs and Wichita Wildcats finished up the June 23 contest that was suspended because of rain and lightning.

Hutchinson led 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning when the game was suspended.

Hutchinson led 7-2 after five innings. The Monarchs’ Joey Senstock belted a solo home run — his third in four games.

Wichita closed within 7-4 in the top of the eighth inning, but the Monarchs scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly, fielder’s choice and an error.

Aidan Sowers pitched five innings of relief of starter Carson Harrell. Sowers allowed one run on three hits and struck out two.

The Monarchs defeated the Haysville Aviators 5-3 Sunday night at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

Hutchinson Monarchs host Great Bend Bat Cats on Wednesday and play Thursday at Great Bend.
