West Shrine Bowl Team features Vernon, King, Redenbaugh, Herman

Hutchinson High School coach Mike Vernon, Hutchinson’s Terrell King, Buhler’s Bodey Redenbaugh and Halstead’s Connor Herman will try to help the West Team continue its dominance over the East Team at the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl Football Game.

The West leads the series 31-18-2.

The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium. Proceeds benefit Shriners Children’s.

“It’s truly an honor to coach in the Shrine Bowl,” Vernon said in his Shrine Bowl profile. He will be an assistant coach for the West team for the second time (he was an assistant for the 2021 game). “I look forward to a week of competition and fellowship. All of which is done for a special cause.”

Vernon will begin his eighth season as Hutchinson Salthawk head football coach and 13th season overall. His career record is 68-49. The Salthawks posted an 8-3 record in 2024.

Vernon was the 2020 and 2022 AVCTL Division I Coach of the Year. He is a graduate of Herington High School and Emporia State University/

Vernon will get to coach Salthawk standout athlete Terrell King, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound defensive back/wide receiver/punter. King, who will play football at Hutchinson Community College, also played point guard on the Hutchinson High basketball team and competed in track.

King was a First Team All-State defensive back by KSHSAA Covered, Kansas Football Coaches Association, Sports in Kansas and Wichita Eagle.

One of King’s West Shrine Bowl teammates is Buhler High School graduate Bodey Redenbaugh, a 6-4, 305-pound offensive lineman. Redenbaugh also signed with HutchCC.

Redenbaugh is a three-year team captain who was voted as Buhler’s best offensive lineman. He was First Team All-State (KFBCA, SIK, KSHSAA, Wichita Eagle), VYPE Wichita All Area (4A-6A), Sports In Kansas Top 100 Seniors (4A-6A).

Another West Shrine Bowl standout is Halstead’s Connor Herman, a 6-4, 273-pound offensive lineman. Herman signed to play football at Friends University in Wichita.

Herman was First Team Central Kansas League OL and DL, 1st Team All-State OL (SIK, KSHSAA, Wichita Eagle), Sports in Kansas Top 100 seniors and AII-
