Opinion: Breaking news: Swearer hits hole-in-one, puts it in newspaper alongside actual news

By Jackson Swearer

Michael Glenn’s story about the traffic lights being removed downtown was the original inspiration for my column this week. I liked my first headline:

Community journalism gives green light for improved dialogue.

I want to highlight stories that inform the public about the actions of our local government. One role of the community newspaper is to help spread the word when changes are coming.

My view is that the people working for the public sector have a tough time keeping people up-to-date. I sometimes wonder what they can do when most of us have too many distractions.

Not that I can blame readers for being distracted. After all, did you see those photos of the Sunflower Cluster Dog Show and the Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Fiesta Adam Stewart shot earlier this week? Both events looked like fun opportunities for our community to come together.

Thank you for giving this column and The Hutchinson Tribune your attention. I know readers’ time is a valuable commodity. One of my goals is to give you both reasons to think and reasons to celebrate.

Wait, did I bury the lede?

Last week I hit an ace while playing with my brother-in-law in a golf tournament. A single hole-in-one is a rare occurrence. On that day three players from the tournament field hit one. It was quite the round of golf.

I was grateful that I was able to enjoy the moment with family and friends. My sister Sarah Ritter and brother-in-law Jason Ritter were in town for the tournament.

The golf ball I hit was a personalized one Jason gave me after my son was born that has his name and birthday on it.

Thank you for indulging me in sharing that special experience with you, as well as subscribing to The Hutchinson Tribune.
