Area athletes bring home six gold medals from Kansas State track and field meet

Hutchinson High School senior KeiRre Martinez captured the first-place gold medal in the Class 5A girls long jump Saturday at the Kansas State High School State Track and Field Championships.

The Kansas state track meet took place in front of 20,000 spectators at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium. It is the largest outdoor track meet in the United States. Nearly 400 athletes competed. The top eight finishers in each event earn team points.

On the fifth of six attempts, Martinez posted a mark of 17 feet, 6 1/2 feet — 2 feet better than silver medalist Page Newland of Emporia.

Martinez was a member of the Salthawk girls 4×100-meter relay team along with Madalyn “Maddy” Moore, Avery Meier and Myleigh Mueller.

The foursome placed 15th in the preliminaries with a time of 51.14 seconds on Friday and did not qualify for the finals.

Martinez’ first-place effort enabled the Salthawks to tie for 22nd place in Class 5A with 10 points.

Including Martinez’ showing, Hutchinson Tribune area track athletes combined for six gold medals. Other gold medal champions from the Hutchinson Tribune area are:

• Hutchinson Central Christian senior Jayden Linscheid claimed the first first-place gold medal for area schools on Friday.

Linscheid cleared the bar at 6 foot, 4 inches to win the Kansas Class 1A boys high jump competition. Linscheid needed fewer attempts than Axtell’s Logan Sandmann, who also cleared 6-4.

The third, fourth and fifth-place high jumpers (Spearville’s Ian Melendez, Hodgeman County’s Brody Schroder and Oxford’s Cordell Jordan) cleared 6-2. Little River junior Ty Janette, La Crosse’s Trenton Skillett and South Central’s Hayden Herzer cleared 6-0.

Burden-Central’s Brock Wilson also cleared 6-0, but he missed on more attempts and finished out of the running for a medal. There were eight jumpers who cleared 5-10.

• The Hutchinson Central Christian girls duo of junior Jessica Losew and senior Belle Barnett placed first and second in the Class 1A girls high jump. Losew cleared 5-foot, 8 inches, and Barnett cleared 5-6.

Central Christian freshman Townsly Huff tied for 10th at 4-10 with Otis-Bison’s Destiny Mitchell. Six others cleared 4-10.

• The Inman girls 4×100-meter relay team of Katie Nichols, Brooklyn Black, Leah Black and Olivia Brunk captured the first-place gold medal with a time of 50.03 seconds.

The Teutons’ foursome placed first in the Class 2A girls 4×100-meter relay preliminaries on Friday with a time of 50.47 seconds.

• Sterling High School junior Julia Kilgore placed first in the Class 2A girls 400-meter dash with a meet record time of 56.4 seconds. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.5 seconds.

• Little River senior Jay Smith finished first in the All-Class boys 100-meter wheelchair race with a time of 22.29 seconds and won the 400-meter wheelchair race with a time of 1:46.5.

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic Class 2A

• Hutchinson Trinity junior Isaac Hammersmith placed second in the 2A boys long jump Friday with a mark of 21-9 1/2. Hammersmith no-heighted in the high jump finals on Saturday.

* The Trinity 4800-meter relay team of Ambrose Pennycuff, Malachiey Alvarez, Max Ryan and Cameron Kiser placed fourth with a time of 8:24.95.

• The Hutchinson Trinity 4×100-meter relay team of Hammersmith, Ian Rios, Roberto Guerrero and Alex Guajardo placed fifth in the 4×100 finals with a time of 44.6 seconds. They finished fifth in the Class 2A boys preliminaries with a time of 44.5 seconds.

• Hutchinson Trinity’s Cameron Kiser placed sixth in the 2A boys 800-meter race with a time of 2:02.46.

• Hutchinson Trinity junior Kaid McElgunn placed seventh in the 2A boys 100-meter dash Saturday with a time of 11.35 seconds.

• Hutchinson Trinity juniors John Lindstrom and Jacob Lindstrom placed ninth and 10th in the 1A boys 3200 with times of 10:02.30 and 10:02.32. 

• John Lindstrom and Jacob Lindstrom placed 12th and 13th in the 1600-meter run with times of 4:42.6 and 4:43.78.

• Alex Guajardo placed 13th in the 2A boys 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 53.04 seconds and did not qualify for the finals.

• The Hutchinson Trinity boys tied Sedgwick for 10th place in Class 2A with 22 points.

Hutchinson Central Christian Class 1A

• Hutchinson Central Christian junior Jessa Losew placed third in the 1A girls 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 59.84 seconds and qualified for the finals. CCHS freshman Harper Newcome placed 10th in the prelims with a time of 1:02 and did not qualify.

• CCHS senior Keaton Miller placed fifth in the Class 1A boys shot put competition Friday with a toss of 49-4 3/4.

• Central Christian freshman Harper Newcome placed fourth in the 1A girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.01.

• Central Christian junior Belle Barnett placed sixth in the 1A girls long jump Friday with an effort of 16-5 1/4 and seventh in the 1A girls 100-meter dash with a time of 12.89 seconds.

• Hutchinson Central Christian sophomore Cal Barnett placed seventh in the 1A boys triple jump with an effort of 41 feet, 9 3/4 inches.

• Cougar junior Konnor Sullivan placed 12th in the 1A boys 110-meter preliminaries Friday with a time of 16.52 seconds and did not qualify for the finals.

• Cougar freshman Addi Loudenback placed 12th in the 400-meter dash preliminaries Friday with a time of 49.74 seconds and did not qualify for the finals.

• Central Christian’s 4×100-meter relay team of Belle Barnett, Harper Newcome, Sophie Graham and Elise Wyatt placed 13th in the 1A girls preliminaries Friday with a time of 52.35 and did not qualify for the finals.

• The Cougar girls scored 28 points and tied for seventh place with Osborne. The Central Christian boys scored 16 points and tied for 16th place with Bucklin.

Buhler Class 4A

• Buhler junior Jenna Lackey placed third in the 4A girls pole vault, clearing the bar at 10 feet.

• Buhler junior Max Harmony tied for third in the 4A boys high jump. He cleared the bar at 14 feet.

• Buhler’s Aidan Anderson and Landon Martinez placed third and fourth in the 4A boys 300-meter hurdles with times of 40.43 and 40.76 seconds.

• Buhler’s foursome of Camryn Goertz, Jenna Lackey, Aaliyah Living and Sofia Spies placed third in the 4A girls 4×100-meter relay with a time of 49.07 seconds. They placed fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 49.91 seconds.

• The Buhler girls 4×800-meter relay team of Laney Reiff, Haylee Kinast, Ava Koster and Corbin Starkweather placed fourth with a time of 9 minutes, 59.72 seconds.

• Buhler’s Gavin Lindahl (sophomore) and Henry Trumpp (senior) placed fourth and fifth in the 4A boys 3200 with times of 9:49.86 and 10:01.37.

• Lindahl and Trumpp placed fourth and sixth in the 4A boys 1600-meter race with time of 4:31.02 and 4:37.23.

• Buhler sophomore Ryan Gotti placed sixth in the 4A girls javelin competition with a throw of 126 feet, 4 inches.

• Buhler junior Laney Reiff placed sixth in the 4A girls 800-meter race with a time of 5:22.18. Sophomore Corbin Starkweather was 14th with a time of 5:45.69. Reiff was sixth in the 4A girls 800 with a time of 2:21.79

• Buhler’s Zach Friesen, Aidan Anderson and Landon Martinez placed second, third and sixth in the 4A boys finals Saturday with times of 14.82, 14.95 and 15.34. The trio placed second, fourth and sixth 110-meter hurdles preliminaries.

• The Buhler 4×100 boys relay team of Zach Friesen, Max Harmony, Brady Gotti and Landon Martinez placed fifth in the finals Saturday with a time of 43.17 seconds. They placed fifth in the preliminaries Friday with a time of 43.43 seconds.

• Buhler freshman Sofia Spies placed seventh in the 4A girls 100-meter dash with a time of 13.66 seconds and was seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.49 seconds.

• Buhler junior Jenna Lackey placed eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.51 seconds.

• Buhler sophomore Dexter Fleeman placed eighth (good for 1 team point) in the 4A boys high jump, cleaning the bar at 6-2. Buhler freshman Garrett Gleason placed 14th with a 5-10 effort.

• Buhler senior Charley Baxter placed ninth in 4A girls shot put with a toss of 35-2 1/2.

• Buhler freshman Isabella Friesen placed 10th in the 4A girls 3200 with a time of 11:59.47.

• Buhler senior Andrew Morgan placed 10th in the 4A boys 800 with a time of 2:01.22.

• Garrett Gleason placed 12th in the 4A boys long jump with a mark of 19-10.

• Buhler freshmen Sofia Spies and Addysyn Keller placed 12th and 16th in the 4A girls long jump with marks of 16-5 and 15-5.

• The Buhler boys placed second with 54.50 points. Andale won the 4A boys state title with 68.50 points.

• The Buhler girls scored 31 points and tied for seventh place with Wamego.

Inman Class 2A

• Inman sophomore Taylor Froese placed second in the 2A girls discus with a throw of 124 feet, 10 inches.

Froese posted her top effort on her second throw and led for most of the competition until Hays-Thomas More Prep Marian senior Paige Schlyer tossed the discus 129-10 on her sixth throw.

Froese pulled double-duty this weekend. She is a member of the Inman softball team that placed second at the Class 2A state tournament in Pratt Friday.

• Inman senior Katie Nichols placed second in the 2A girls long jump with an effort of 17-7 1/2. Nichols tied for fourth with Hillsboro’s Emily Gilkey in the 1A girls high jump Friday morning. Both cleared 5 feet

• Inman freshman Bo O’Neil placed third in the Class 2A boys discus with a throw of 154 feet, 4 inches.

• The Inman girls 4×400-meter relay team of Leah Black, Brooklyn Black, Olivia Brunk and Dakota Nees placed third with a time of 4:09.46.

• Inman sophomore Faith Baxter placed fourth in the 100-meter All-Class wheelchair race with a time of 36.17 seconds.

• The Inman boys 4×800-meter relay team of Riley Roots, Gage Sisson, Cooper Wiens and Tyler Martisko placed fifth with a time of 8:30.43. 

• Martisko placed seventh in the 1A boys 800 with a time of 2:02.49.

• Inman junior Riley Roots placed eighth in the 2A boys 3200 with a time of 10:02.10.

• Inman junior Suttyn Harris placed seventh in the 2A girls shot put with an effort of 36-4 1/2.

• Inman sophomore Brooklyn Black placed fourth in the 2A girls 300-meter hurdles finals Saturday with a time of 46.4 seconds. She posted a third-place time of 46.73 seconds in the preliminaries.

• The Inman girls track team scored 43.50 points and placed fourth. Hoxie won the 3A girls state title with 53 point. Wabaiunsee and Smith Center tied for second with 44 points.

• The Inman boys track teams scored 13 points and placed 17th in 2A boys.

Halstead Class 3A

• Halstead freshman Annie Williams placed second in the Class 3A girls long jump with an effort of 17 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

• Halstead senior Joey Millspaugh finished fourth in the Class 3A boys long jump finals Saturday with an effort of 20 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

• Halstead senior Beeson Bigley placed fourth in the 3A boys 400-meter dash with a time ion 50.38 seconds. Senior teammate Keaston Shields placed seventh in 50.86.

• The Halstead boys 4×100-meter relay team of Finn Howard, Bigley, Braxton Creed and Millspaugh placed seventh with a time of 43.5 seconds.

• Millspaugh placed 14th in the 3A boys triple jump Friday with a mark of 40-8.

• Halstead senior Dalaina Schutte placed 14th in the 3A girls javelin with a throw of 110-2.

• Halstead senior Kurt Faudell placed 15th in the 3A boys shot put with an effort of 45 feet, 6 inches.

• Halstead sophomore Katharine Engel placed 16th in the 3A girls discus with a throw of 84-9.

• The Halstead boys scored 18 points and tied Hesston for 16th place in Class 3A boys. The Halstead girls scored 8 points and tied for 26th place in 3A girls with Holcomb. 

Nickerson Class 3A

• On her sixth attempt, Nickerson High School senior Rachel Nisly placed fifth in the Class 3A girls shot put with an effort of 40 feet, 3/4 of an inch and earned 4 points for the Panther girls track team.

• The Nickerson girls track team tied for 35th place in Class 3A girls with Silver Lake.

Haven Class 3A

• The Haven boys 4×400-meter relay team of Aiden Hoopes, Van Loop, Cole Brawner and Blake Richey placed sixth Saturday with a time of 3:27.65.

• Haven sophomore Isaiah Doherty placed 12th in the Class 3A boys 3200 with a time of 10:08.24.

• Haven freshman Rilynn Patry placed 14th in the 3A girls shot put with an effort of 31 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

• Aiden Hoopes placed 14th in the 100-meter dash preliminaries Friday and did not qualify for the finals. His time was 11.27 seconds.

• The Haven boys track team scored 3 points and tied for 33rd place in 3A boys with Perry-Lecompton.

Lyons Class 3A

• Lyons junior Hendrix Starbuck placed sixth with in the 1A boys discus with a throw of 153-6.

• Lyons senior Xavier Solis placed eighth in the 3A boys long jump with an effort of 41-11 1/4.

• The Lyons boys scored 4 points and tied for 30th in 3A boys with Sabetha.

Sterling Class 2A

• Sterling junior Julia Kilgore placed second in the Class 2A girls 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 58.19 seconds and qualified for the finals.

• Sterling junior Zane Farney placed second in the 3A boys 300-meter hurdles finals Saturday with a time of 39.26 seconds.

• Sterling sophomore Katie Inwood placed 13th in the 2A girls 3200 with a time of 12:57.75.

• The Sterling girls track team scored 18 points and tied for 13th place 3A girls with Eureka.

• The Sterling boys track team scored 8.50 points and tied for 24th place with Lyndon.

Little River Class 1A

• Little River junior Christopher Norez placed third in 1A boys javelin with a throw of 169-8.

• The Little River boys 4×100-meter relay team of Logan Schubert, Jhett Ewertt, Kal-El Robinson and Tristan Bristow placed fourth with a time of 44.57 seconds.

• Little River’s Havana Olander placed fifth in the 1A girls long jump with an effort of 16-6 1/4.

• Little River junior Cole Dieball placed sixth in the 1A boys shot put with a toss of 48-8 1/4 and placed sixth in the 1A boys discus with a throw of 158-2.

• Little River junior Kal-El Robinson placed seventh in the 1A boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.39 seconds.

• Little River sophomore Abby Schroeder placed 12th in the 1A girls 800 with a time of 2:30.66.

• The Little River boys track team scored 22 points and placed eight in 1A boys.

• The Little River girls track team scored 14 points and tied for 15th place with Rosalia-Flinthills,

Burrton Class 1A

• Burrton sophomore Isaac Jones placed 16th in the 1A boys 3200 with a time of 10:57.28.

Fairfield Class 1A

• Fairfield junior Brodie Snodgrass placed 13th in the 1A boys long jump with a mark of 19-11.

Pretty Prairie Class 1A

• Pretty Prairie freshman Lauren Detter placed second in the 1A girls 1600-meter run with a time of 5:19.03 and second in the 800 with a time of 2:20.55.
