Davian Spies captures 4A boys state singles title, Buhler Crusaders place third

Buhler High School senior Davian Spies, who will play tennis at McPherson College next year, won his third Class 4A state singles championship in four years Saturday.

The 4A boys state tournament was played at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield and was hosted by Wellington High School.

Spies, who won the 2022 state title as a freshman, defeated Wyatt Shultz of Parsons 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match.

Spies defeated Shultz for the second straight year after Shultz beat him in the state title match in 2023.

Spies, who also owns four regional titles, finished his senior year with a 29-2 record and a career record of 122-14.

Spies won his first match of the 2025 state tennis tournament over Concordia’s Evan Bombardier 6-0, 6-0, defeated Winfield’s Copeland Quiett 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Independence’s Keith Sanders 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Buhler’s Van Woleslagel and Reuben Harder placed third in doubles, defeating Topeka Hayden’s Chase Blaser and Evan George in the third-place match 6-2, 6-4.

Woleslagel and Harder received a first-round bye, won their first match 6-2, 6-0 over Shawnee Mission Bishop Miege’s Joseph Schmidt and Matthew Morris 6-2, 6-0, defeated Parsons’ Cole Kennett and Conner arcus 6-0, 6-2 and lost to Winfield’s Adam Everett and Jackson Davis 7-5, 7-5.

Buhler’s other doubles team Titus Bortzfield and Jaxton Gillette lost their first two matches.

Hesston’s Asher Deutschendorf and Braiden Liechly captured the singles state title.

Buhler, 2024 state champions, finished third in team points with 28. Parsons and Winfield tied for first place with 29 points.

Hesston placed fourth with 26, followed by Independence 17, Shawnee Mission Bishop Miege 13, Clay Center 12 and Topeka Hayden 12.

Sterling places 5th at Class 3-1A state tennis tournament

The Sterling High School boys tennis team placed fifth with 17 points at the Kansas Class 3-1A state tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

Sterling’s Jace Darnauer placed fifth in singles. The doubles team of Ben Bierstedt and Zac Wohler placed eighth.

Wichita Collegiate won the state meet with 58 points. The Spartans finished first and second in singles and firsthand third in doubles.

Conway Springs was second with 24 points, Classical School of Wichita placed third with 21 points, Central Plains-Claflin placed fourth with 19 points. 

Lyons scored 2 points and Haven picked up 1 point.

Salthawk baseball team to play Goddard-Eisenhower in 5A West No. 2 Regional opener

The Hutchinson High School baseball team (15-11) is the No. 10 seed in Kansas Class 5A West, and will play No. 7 seed Goddard Eisenhower (16-10) in the Regional No. 2 semifinals at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wichita’s Westurban-Adams diamonds.

The other semifinal features No. 2 seed Wichita Bishop Carroll (20-2) vs. No. 15 Goddard (8-16), which will start 25 minutes after the conclusions of the Hutchinson-Eisenhower game.

The regional championship, featuring the semifinal winners, will be played 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Carroll-Goddard game.

The four West Regional winners and four East Regional winners will play in the 5A state tournament May 29-30 at Wichita State University’s Eck Stadium.

Buhler baseball team plays Larned/La Crosse in 4A regional opener

The Buhler High School baseball team (17-5) is the No. 5 overall seed in the Kansas Class 4A West bracket, and will play Larned/La Crosse (15-9) at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 4A West No. 1 Regional at McPherson.

McPherson (23-3), the No. 1 seed overall in Class 4A, will play No. 16 Towanda-Circle (9-17) in the regional semifinal. The game will start 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Buhler-Larned/La Crosse game.

The regional championship game, featuring the semifinals winners, will play 25 minutes after the conclusion of the McPherson-Circle game.

The four West Regional winners and four East Regional winners will play in the 4A state tournament May 29-30 at Salina’s Dean Evans Stadium.

Buhler softball to play Rose Hill in 4A regional opener

The Buhler High School softball team (17-9) is the No. 6 seed overall in the Kansas Class 4A West brackets.

The Crusaders will play No. 11 Rose Hill (12-12) in a 2 p.m. game Tuesday at Clearwater, followed by Clearwater (22-4) vs. Hugoton/Moscow  25 minutes.

The winners play for the regional title 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Clearwater-Hugoton/Moscow game.

Regional winners qualify for the Class 4A state baseball tournament May 29-30 at Salina South High School.

Buhler girls soccer team to host Winfield in 4-1A West Regional game

The Buhler High School girls soccer team (11-5) is the No. 4 seed overall in the Kansas Clas 4-1A West Regional bracket and were placed in 4-1A West Regional No. 4.

The Crusaders will host Winfield (0-15-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Crusader Stadium in Buhler.

The other West Regional No. 4 matchup features No. 5 Mulvane (10-8) vs. Wichita Collegiate (3-11-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mulvane High School.

The winners will meet in the 4-1A West Regional No. 4 championship on Thursday at a site to be determined.

Hutchinson girls soccer team will host Goddard in regional opener

The Hutchinson High School girls soccer team is the No. 6 overall seed in Kansas Class 5A West Regional and were placed in West Regional No. 3.

The Salthawks (10-6), the No. 6 seed overall in Class 5A West, will host No. 11 seed Goddard (8-8) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

“The season finale win gives Hutch 10 on the season, an impressive feat in a stacked 5A west division,” said Hutchinson assistant soccer coach Cidy Vargas. “Now the Salthawks will turn their focus to the playoffs.

“The home support is always amazing. Tuesday the home fans will be vital as these girls will be attempting to win their first playoff game in recent history.”

The other West Regional No. 3 matchup features No. 3 Maize (14-2) hosting No. 14 Arkansas City (5-11) at 7 p.m. Monday at Maize South High School.

The West Regional No. 3 winners play for the championship Thursday at a site to be determined.

The Salthawks are coming off a 3-2 overtime victory over Haysville Campus/Clearwater Thursday at Campus Colt Stadium in Haysville. The score was tied 1-1 at halftime. 

Keyla Fernandez, on her mother’s birthday, scored the game-winner in overtime on a penalty kick. The Salthawks needed just 48 seconds in the extra period to set up the game-winner.

Junior Rhyan Galyon scored Hutchinson’s first two goals. The first goal came on an assist from senior Lily Rodriguez. The second goal came after Galyon ran about 60 yards after taking a pass from junior Jenna Giles.

“Rodriguez would play another great ball in behind for Galyon,” Vargas said. “Rhyan dribbling in the box, cut back on the keeper and hit a ball that deflected off a Colt defender’s hand resulting in a penalty kick awarded to Hutch.”

The Hutchinson Salthawks’ junior varsity girls dropped their season finale ro Campus 1-0.

“As injuries continued to plague the team throughout the year, these girls continued to work, many playing unfamiliar positions, but never complained or quit,” Vargas said. “The result doesn’t reflect the work these girls have put in throughout the season, the development has been fun to witness and the future is bright for these young Salthawks.”

Buhler girls 2nd at AVCTL Division 3/4 swim meet

The Buhler High School girls swim team placed second at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division 3/4 meet Friday at Maize.

Buhler scored 378 points, placing second out of nine teams. Second place is the best the team has done in program history.

Next week, several of the girls will be training for a state competition in Topeka.

Several records were broken, personal records were set and more state qualifying times were posted.

Medley relay: Buhler A took 2nd place overall — Hannah Swain, Evey Brooks, Avilynn Ehmke and Reyne Kaufman. 

200 freestyle: Hannah Swain at 2nd place, earning another state-qualifying time of 2:10.78, Reyne Kaufman took 8th place and Payton Ball in 16th place.

200 individual medley: Avery Schrader led the team in 7th place, with Addy Tech in 8th and Cassidy Banning rounding out the event in 13th. 

50 freestyle: Avilynn Ehmke earned 5th place with a state consideration time, Grace Schmidt in 8th and Harper Kendrick in 12th place. 

Diving: Ellie Goering is the AVCTL League Champion, with a record dive score of 282.4. Evey Brooks placed 2nd with a score of 248.70 and Ellie Keeton 3rd with a score of 234.60. 

100 butterfly: Avery Schrader placed 6th, with Ellie Goering in 9th, Ellie Keeton in 10th and Ava Schmidt in 11th.

100 freestyle: Avilynn Ehmke placed 5th, Grace Schmidt in 7th and Ragen Walle in 11th. 

500 free: Hannah Swain earned 3rd place with Reyne Kaufman in 5th place, Cathlyna Theriot in 10th and Cora Nuttmann, swimming this event for the first time, in 13th place.

200 free A relay: Regan Walle, Addy Tech, Grace Schmidt and Avery Schrader took 5th

100 backstroke: Regan Walle placed 13th and Brayla Johnson earned 16th. 

100  breaststroke: Evey Brooks earnedg 6th place. Addy Tech earned 9th, Harper Kendrick earned 11th and Cassidy Banning placed 15th. 

400 freestyle relay: The Buhler A relay team of Avilynn Ehmke, Grace Schmidt, Reyne Kaufman and Hannah Swain took 2nd with a staggering 8-second cut in time, earning the first-ever state-qualifying relay.

Buhler boys, girls dominate AVCTL Division 4 track meet

The Buhler High School girls and Crusader boys captured the team championships at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division 4 track meet Friday night at Crusader Stadium in Buhler.

The Buhler girls scored 216 points and the Buhler boys 176.5. The McPherson girls placed second with 108 points and the McPherson boys placed third with 100.5.

Placing first for the Buhler boys: Garrett Gleason, high jump, 6-0, and long jump, 20-1 3/4; Max Harmony, pole vault, 13-6; Zach Friesen, 110 hurdles, 1.86; boys 4×100 relay, 43.8; Landon Martinez, Aidan Anderson, Owen Kneel placed 1-2-3 in the 300 hurdles (40.25, 41.47 and 43.43); Gavin Lindahl, 3200, 10:01.83.

Placing first for the Buhler girls: Lillie Ledford, 100, 12.46 (teammate Sofia Spies was second in 12.58). Hutchinson boys, girls 6th at AVCTL I track meet

The Hutchinson High School boys and girls track teams were sixth at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I meet Friday night at Panther Stadium in Derby.

The Salthawk boys scored 26 points and the Hutchinson girls scored 33 points.

Maize edged Derby 149-146 for the AVCTL I boys team title and the Derby girls edged Salina South 133-114 for the girls title, with Valley Center placing third with 108 points.

Hutchinson’s Camrynn Harris won the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.00 seconds, placed third in the 200 in 23.04 and 10th in the 400 in 54.24.

Kaleb Cape was third in the boys shot put with an effort of 43-8.

Hutchinson’s Myleigh Muller placed first in the girls high jump with an effort of 4 feet, 10 inches. KeiRre Martinez placed third in the girls long jump with a mark of 16-6 1/4.

Avery Tecklenburg was third in the 1600 with a time of 5:45.01 and was fourth in the 800 at 2:34.17. Emma Wittekind was fourth in the 400 at 1:03.52.

Central Christian, Trinity, Buhler boys golfers ranked in latest KGA poll

Three Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School, three Hutchinson Central and one Buhler golf team members are in the top 10 of their respective class’s individual standings.

The Kansas Golf Association posted its latest team and individual rankings on Sunday.
