Herbert drives to victory at Fairgrounds

Buhler High School senior Davian Spies rolled to his fourth consecutive Class 4A regional singles title Friday, winning the championship match 6-0, 6-1.
Spies won the title at the 4A regional played on his home court at Buhler High School. His season record is 25-2.
Spies, who will play tennis at McPherson College next year, will be going for his third state singles championship next week.
Buhler and Winfield for first place with 15 points, but the tie-breaking procedure resulted in Winfield getting the team title. Hesston placed third with 14 points, followed by El Dorado 7, Towanda-Circle 3, Wellington 3 and Augusta 1.
Buhler’s Von Woleslagel and Reuben Harder (21-3) bounced back from a semifinal loss to capture third place in doubles and earn a trip back to the state tournament.
Titus Bortzfield and Jaxton Gillette (18-12) qualified for their first trip to state by capturing sixth place in doubles.
Tucker Schlatter (12-12) won his first-round match 6-0, 6-3 before running into a tough matchup with Spies.
After losing to Spies in the quarterfinals, Schlatter battled through cramps but came up just short of qualifying for the 4A state meet next Friday and Saturday at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield.
In the Class 3-2-1A regional singles competition at Wichita Collegiate, Hutchinson Trinity’s Sam Madden lost in the first round and Vincent Wuertz lost in the second round.
In doubles, Sam Pennycuff and Ethan Harvey won their first round match and lost in the second round to Haven’s Brady Peterson and Devin Boice 6-0, 6-1.
Peterson and Boice (20-8) placed fifth and are headed to state. They defeated Haven teammates Maguire Jacques and Gatlin Rinehart in the consolation round 6-1, 7-5 and defeated Smoky Valley’s Jack Bieker and Pierce Keller in the fifth-place match 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In singles, Haven’s Noah Miller and Brennan Williams both lost in the second round.
Haven placed fifth in the team standings with 4 points.
Class 3-1A Conway Springs regional state qualifiers in singles are Sterling’s Jace Darnauer (second place, 22-6) and Lyons’ Fred Cheun (fourth place, 13-9).
Sterling’s Ben Bierstedt-Zac Wohler (3rd place, 19-11) qualified in doubles.
The Sterling Black Bears placed third with 11 points.

Class 2-1A Baseball Regional at Marion: Hutchinson Trinity to play Inman
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic Celtic baseball team will play the Inman Teutons at 3 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Kansas Class 2-1A Regional at Marion.
The Celtics are the No. 3 seed and Inman is the No. 6 seed in the Marion regional.
No. 2 seed Little River (19-3) will play No. 7 seed Marion (11-13) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The first-round winners advance to the 4 p.m. semifinal March 19 at Marion.
In first-round games Thursday at Friends University in Wichita, No. 1 Sedgwick (24-0) plays No. 8 Rosalia-Flinthills (9-14) art 3 p.m., followed by No. 4 Whitewater-Remington (13-8) vs. No. 5 Moundridge (13-9) at 5 p.m.
The first-round winners play in the 2 p.m. semifinal game March 19 at Marion.
The semifinal winners will play for the regional championship at 6 p.m. March 19.

Nickerson baseball, softball seniors play final home games
Four Nickerson High School baseball players and four softball players played their final home games Friday night against Larned.
The Nickerson baseball team lost 6-3 and 20-2 and the Panther softball team lost 23-0 and 20-1.
Nickerson Panther baseball seniors are Micah Engstrom, Joshua Rodarte, Micah Jarrett and Keastin Abernathy.
Senior softball players are Kassie Graham, Jayli Groth, Taylor Huggard, and Kaitlyn Kreutzer.
KGCA ranks Hutchinson Central Christian, Hutchinson Trinity boys golf teams
The Hutchinson Central Christian boys golf team is ranked second in Class 1A with (325 average) and Hutchinson Trinity Catholic is ranked third in Class 2A (332 average) in the latest Kansas Golf Coaches Association poll released on Saturday.
No. 1 teams are Overland Park-Blue Valley North (298 average, Class 6A; St. James Academy (300 average), Class 5A; Topeka Hayden (312 average),Class 4A; Hugoton (320 average), Class 3A; Syracuse (318 average), Class 2A; and South Gray (300 average), Class 1A.
Inman softball, baseball teams take on Remington
The Inman High School softball team swept a doubleheader Friday at Whitewater. The Teutons defeated Remington 15-1 in the first game and 25-11 in the second game.
The Teutons swept Sterling on Thursday, taking the first game 17-1 and the second game 8-4.
The Inman baseball team lost to Remington 9-5 and 16-5.
Brian Herbert drives to victory at Kansas State Fairgrounds track
The United Rebel Sprint Series stormed into SaltCity Racing in Hutchinson Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds race track.
Brian Herbert drove to victory in the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car A-Feature.
Herbert in the No. 97 sprint car posted his first win with the URSS since May 2018 at Dodge City Raceway Park and the 24th of his career with the series since 2008.
Jeremy Huish (88J) gave chase and crossed the line in second, with Jeremy Campbell (51) rounding out the podium after a smooth and steady run.
Early front-runners Jake Martens (17X) and Jordan Knight (88) completed the top five, both showing competitive speed throughout the night.
Pole Dash winner Johnny Boos (24B) looked poised to grab his first career URSS win after sweeping his heat and dash, but slipped back to sixth in the main event.
Taylor Velasquez (21X) rebounded from a heat race DNF to take seventh, while Ty Williams (911), Tyler Knight (11K) and Steven Richardson (20) rounded out the top 10.
