Salthawk baseball team sweeps doubleheader from Maize

The Hutchinson Salthawk varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Maize Eagles Friday night at Hobart-Detter Field, winning the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 3-1.

Hutchinson improved to 15-10. Maize dropped to 15-8.

The Salthawks host Overland Park-St. Thomas Aquinas on Monday.

Maize hosts Kapaun-Mount Carmel on Monday, Andover Central on Tuesday and Bishop Carroll on Thursday.

Hutchinson Trinity golfers capture team title at home meet

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School boys golf team captured first place at the Hutchinson Trinity Catholic Invitational Thursday at the par-71 Crew Park Golf Course in Hutchinson.

Trinity placed first with a 307 score, followed by Hutchinson Central Christian 313, Inman 323, Hesston 365, St. John-Hudson 369, Sedgwick 397 and Nickerson 431.

Trinity and Central Christian dominated the top nine individual spots, with Trinity taking first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place (tie) and Central Christian taking second, third, seventh and ninth.

Trinity’s Miles Blaylock captured first-place medalist honors with a 1-over-par 72.

Ian Shaw placed fourth at 76, followed by Tyler Casebolt,fofth, 79, Lincoln Barnes, sixth, 80; Seamus Hogan, tied for seventh, 81; and Matt Armour, 12th, 88.

Central Christian was paced by Cael Kooiman, who placed second with a 74, and Ryland Kooiman, who was third with a 75. Tyler Reed tied for seventh with an 81, followed by Nathan Reed, who placed ninth with an 83.

Rounding out the CCHS Cougar scoring was Brady Froese, who placed 25th at 100 and Tarren Scripsick, who placed 34th with a 114.

Nickerson’s top golfer was Alfonso Lozano, who tied for 19th, 96; Kyler Nikkel, 21st, 97; and Jacob Myers and Shamus Nugent, tied for 37th, 119.

Inman’s top golfer was Creighton Fries, tied for 19th, 96; Braeden Stutzman, tied for 23rd, 99; and Kareem Schierling, tied for 40th, 128.

Hesston’s Tytan Howard placed 10th with an 84.

Nickerson boys, girls track athletes compete at Towanda-Circle Varsity Invitational

The Nickerson High School boys track team placed 11th and the Panther girls finished 13th Friday at the Towanda-Circle Varsity Invitational.

The Nickerson boys scored 23 points and the girls scored 6.

Emporia won the boys team title with 104 points and Andover won the girls title with 102.5 points.

Nickerson’s Evan Trostle placed second in the boys pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 6 inches. Teammate Gabe Cesar placed seventh at 9-6 and James Wallace eighth at 9-0.

Levi Pauley placed third in the 1600 with a time of 4 minutes, 41.72 seconds. The boys 4×800 relay team placed fourth in 9:00.21.

Riley Brawner was fourth in the discus at 142-5. Andy Huggard was eighth in the 800 in 2:11.72.

Nickerson’s Katy King placed third in the girls discus with a toss of 102-9. Elizabeth Dick and King were ninth and 10th in the shot put at 32-7 and 31-10.

Buhler JV golfers placed 3rd, Hutchinson 20th at AVCTL Tournament

The Buhler High School junior varsity boys golf team placed third and Hutchinson High School placed 20th at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League JV Invitational Friday at the par-71 Hesston Golf Course.

Buhler posted a 347 score and Hutchinson 465. Salina South won the tournament title with a 273 score and Andover placed second at 311.

Buhler was paced by Carter Stover, who placed fourth with a 9-over-par 80. Ben Gazaway tied for 13th, 86; Trevor Tustain, tied for 21st, 89; Carson Thibault, tied for 33rd, 92; Brennan Geilenf, tied for 39th, 95; and Tailan Dailey, tied for 54th, 98.

Hutchinson was led by Mason Deberry, tied goat 81st, 107; Henry Ediger, tied for 83rd,108; Giovanni Reza, tied for 105th, 121; and Bennett Gardner,118th, 129.

KABC rankings: Buhler 8th in 4A, Haven 9th in 3A

Buhler is ranked eighth in Class 4A and Haven ninth in Class 3A in the latest Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches poll.

Little River is second in Class 2-1A.

The No. 1-ranked teams are Olathe West, 6A; St. Thomas Aquinas, 5A; Topeka Hayden, 4A; Meriden-Jefferson West, 3A; and Sedgwick, 2-1A.

Halstead softball team sweeps Bluestem, Kaci Young reaches 400 strikeouts

The Halstead Dragons softball team swept Bluestem in a doubleheader Thursday at home and improved to 20-2.

Halstead won the first game 6-1 and the second game 5-4.

Halstead senior pitcher Kaci Young now has 400 career strikeouts and accomplished the milestone in three seasons. Young missed her sophomore season because of an ACL injury.

Young will play softball next season at Hutchinson Community College.

Buhler varsity, JV girls soccer teams dominate Salina South

The Buhler High School varsity and junior varsity soccer teams shut out Salina South Thursday at Crusader Field in Buhler.

The varsity won 1-0 and the JV won 2–0.

In the varsity game, Mikaela Jarrett scored the Buhler goal on an assist by Nicole Anselmo.

“Clean sheet again by Sammie Brooks and her defense,” said Buhler coach Randall Rank. “They held on at the end.”

In the JV game,Kennedee Applegate and Kylie Gregg scored the goals on assists by Kalia McDowell and Maycee Kimble.

“Clean sheet by the Cummins sisters (Josie and Abigail) and the defense,” Rank said.” Our next game is on Monday at home. We host Classical (School of Wichita). Have a great graduation weekend, seniors.”

Hutchinson girls soccer team falls to Wichita Trinity Academy

The Hutchinson High School girls soccer team lost to Wichita Trinity Academy 4-0 Thursday night at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

The score at halftime was 2-0.

The Salthawk junior varsity defeated Wichita Trinity Academy 1-0.

The Hutchinson varsity and JV soccer teams host Salina South on Tuesday.
