Blue Dragon softball team dropped into Region 6 Tournament elimination bracket

Salthawk baseball goes 20-0 at Krol Family Baseball Triangular, area prep roundups

The defending Region 6 champion Hutchinson Blue Dragon softball team lost to Barton Community College 2-0 Friday night and was dropped into the elimination bracket of the 2025 Region 6 Tournament at Legends Park in Dodge City.

Hutchinson will play Dodge City at noon Saturday in an elimination game.

Barton (33-14) scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson (36-10) collected just three hits off Barton pitcher Meleia Ingram, who pitched seven innings, walked three and struck out six. Bailey Backhaus, Brooke Backhaus and Haley Kruger had singles.

Hutchinson started Morgan Tomlinson, who allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two. Karter Alvord doubled home both Barton runs.

In Hutchinson’s 1-0 victory over Seward County Friday afternoon, Aubree Thomas (13-3) pitched a complete game three-hit shutout for the victory. She walked two and struck out two.

Addi Lutz’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning scored the only run of the game.

Hutchinson collected just three hits off three Saints’ pitchers. Bailey Backhaus singled and stole a base. Kaibryn Kruger and Tailor Golly each had doubled. Golly, Brooke Backhaus and Brie Brawner walked.

Seward County stranded two runners in the top of the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

No. 3-seed Barton CC advanced to the second round with a 11-5 victory over No. 6 Colby in the first round. In other first round games Friday, No. 1 Butler CC defeated No. 8 Pratt CC 14-2 (5 innings) and No. 4 Garden City defeated No. 5 Dodge City 13-2 (6 innings).

Dodge City eliminated Pratt 14-4 (5 innings), Garden City upset Butler 4-2 and Colby eliminated Seward County 7-6.

Salthawk baseball team 2-0 at Krol Family Baseball Triangular

The Hutchinson Salthawk baseball team went 2-0 at the Krol Family Triangular Friday night at Hobart-Detter Field.

Hutchinson (12-9) defeated Andale/Garden Plain 3-1 and Haven 12-0. Haven defeated Andale/Garden Plain 7-2 in the middle game of the triangular.

Haven, ranked ninth in Class 3A in the latest Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches poll, improved to 15-7. Andale/Garden Plain dropped to 10-10.

The teams are coached by the Krol brothers: Mace for Hutchinson, Adam for Andale/Garden Plain and Noah for Haven.

Hutchinson’s Jack Davis pitched a complete game in the win over Andale/Garden Plain, which scored the first run of the contest in the top of the first inning.

Hutchinson’s Caiden Beavers’ sacrifice fly tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. 

Hutchinson scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by GeVaugn Embers and an error.

Jack Yoder, Carter Morgan, Beavers and JuJu Lyons each had a hit for Hutchinson. The Salthawks’ defense turned three double plays.

Brody Winter drove in the Andale/Garden Plain run. Noah Stanley, Austin Bugner and Jared Flax each collected one hit for Andale/Garden Plain.

In the win over Haven, Beavers collected three hits in four at bats. He singled in the first inning, hit an inside-the-park home run in the second and doubled in the third.

Hutchinson starting pitcher Carter Morgan (4-1) earned the win. He allowed three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out five and walking two. Wyatt Bontrager took the loss for Haven.

Haven scored six runs in the final inning to defeat Andale/Garden Plain 7-2 in the middle game. The key hit to the Haven rally was a three-run triple by Chandler Ingold, who also got the victory on the mound.

Ingold and Tanner Loughrie each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Buhler, Hutchinson golfers 17th, 18th at Rusty Hilst Invitational

The golf teams from Buhler and Hutchinson high schools placed 17th and 18th at the 31-team Rusty Hilst Invitational Friday at the par-71 Carey Park Golf Course.

Buhler posted a team score of 343 and Hutchinson posted a 346 team score.

Overland Park-Blue Valley North won the team title with a 288 score, followed by Manhattan 290, Shawnee Misson East 292 and Wichita Bishop Carroll 294.

Blue Valley North’s Brady Rapp and Shawnee Mission East’s Hudson Bennish tied for first place at the end of regulation with 68s. Rapp beat Bennish in a playoff.

Buhler’s top golfer was Drew DeMeyer who tied for 13th place with a 74,  followed by Nick Chance, tied for 81st, 84; Isaiah Heredia, tied for 115th, 91; Jace Heimerman, tied for 126th, 94; and James Dingler, tied for 140th, 97.

Hutchinson’s top golfer was Mitchell Rice, who tied for 61st place with an 82, followed by Tate England, tied for 81st, 84; Landyn Powell, tied for 98th, 88; Alex Haas, tied for 119th, 92; Brody Root, tied for 156th, 106; and Kevin Wilson, tied for 159th, 107.

Buhler girls soccer team shuts out Wichita Independent 2-0

The Buhler High School varsity girls team improved to 8-4 with a 2-0 victory over Wichita Independent/Garden Plain Friday night at Wichita.

Natalya Krafels scored Buhler’s first goal on an assist by Lakin Yoder. Madi McCool scored the second goal on a free kick.

Buhler goalkeeper Sammie Brooks and the defense posted a clean shut shutout.

Buhler’s next game is the Crusaders’ last league game Tuesday at McPherson.

“Make the trip and support the girls,” said Buhler coach Randall Rank. “Last year’s game was a great one.”

Buhler hosts Salina South on Thursday.

Friday night scores

• The Hutchinson High School softball team was swept by Derby Friday night at Derby. The Panthers on the first game 16-1 and the second game 9-0.

• The Buhler High School softball team swept a doubleheader at Abilene Friday. Buhler defeated Abilene in the opener 5-3 and won the second game 5-2.

• The Buhler High School baseball team, ranked eighth in Class 4A in the latest Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches poll, split a doubleheader Friday night at Abilene. Abilene won the first game 5-4 and Buhler won the nightcap 8-5.

• The Halstead baseball team lost to Hoisington 3-2 in the first game and 10-0 in the second game.

Davan Spies, Buhler boys tennis team place first at Smoky Valley Invitational

Buhler High School senior Davan Spies won the open-draw singles competition and the duo of Von Woleslagel and Reuben Harder won the doubles titles Thursday at the Smoky Valley Invitational tennis tournament.

The tournament was played on the tennis courts at Smoky Valley High School and Bethany College in Lindsborg.

Buhler won the team title with 44 points. Smoky Valley also scored 44 points but Buhler was awarded the team title because of the two division titles.

Tucker Schlatter of Buhler finished seventh in singles. The Crusaders’ doubles team of Titus Bortzfield and Jaxton Gillette placed 11th in doubles.

Sterling placed third in the team standings with 37 points. The Black Bears placed second in singles (Jace Darnauer), fifth in singles (Ben Bierstedt-Zac Wohler) and eighth in doubles (TraceDeShon-Isaac Sant) and added another point in singles (Jacobus DeWit).

Andover Central placed fourth with 35 points, followed by Ellinwood in fifth place with 21 points, Andover Central in sixth place with 10, Hutchinson Trinity in seventh with 6, Sacred Heart in eighth with 1 and Hutchinson in ninth with 0.

In singles, Hutchinson Trinity’s Sam Pennycuff placed ninth and the Hutchinson Trinity doubles team of Sam Madden and Vincent Wuertz placed 10th.

Hutchinson’s Alex Johnson and Sam Thompson placed 13th.

Buhler golfers 14th, Sterling 17th at Hesston golf tournament

The Buhler High School boys golf team placed 14th and Sterling 17th at the 19-team Hesston Invitational Thursday at the par-71 Hesston Golf Course.

Buhler golfers posted a 360 team score and Sterling 374.

Buhler’s top golfer was Isaiah Heredia, who tied for 51st place with a 12-over-par 83.

Brennan Geilenf and Race Lusk tied for 76th with 89s, followed by Carter Stover, tied for 81st, 90; Trevor Tustain, tied for 88th, 92; Brayden Adams, 103rd, 100; Ben Gazaway, 108th, 108.

Sterling’s top golfer was Cameron Morris who tied for 32nd with a 79, followed by Waylon Schmidt, tied for 84th, 91; Wyatt Newberry, tied for 95th, 95; and Lane Weigel tied for 109th, 109.

Maize South won the team title with a 290 score, followed by Adover Central 296 and Kapaun-Mount Carmel 298.

Andover Central’s Colt Farrow fired a 5-under-par 66 to capture first-place medalist honors.
