Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team earn split on Sophomore Appreciation Day

Hutchinson and Garden City played for a second day in a row at Hobart-Detter Field Saturday in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

It was also Sophomore Appreciation Day. Sophomores on the Blue Dragon roster are Taber Stokes, Jarrett Herrmann, Trenton Roehler, CJ Reid, Quinn Maher, Sean Combs, Jack Gardner and A.J. Mustow, 

Garden City won the first game 9-4 and Hutchinson won the second game 12-2 on Reid’s two-run homer that ended the game on the run-rule.

Garden City scored on an unearned run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Hutchinson scored on a Taber Stokes sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to even the score at 1-1.

With two outs in the bottom in the second inning, Hutchinson’s Leo Griffin legged out a hustle double and scored on RBI double by Scotty Fegen to put HutchCC ahead 2-1.

In the top of the third inning, Garden City put a runner on base, but the Blue Dragons turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Reid walked, took second base on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI double by Nick Glantz. Hutchinson led 3-1.

Garden City tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

The Blue Dragons took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Stokes lined a single to center field to lead off the inning, stole second base with two outs and scored on Cael Hamrick’s RBI single.

Garden City scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, three runs on no hits in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh (aided by a Hutchinson error) for the 9-4 final score.

In Game 2 in the bottom of the first inning, the Blue Dragons took a 6-0 lead on just two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Hutchinson sent 11 hitters to the plate.

Hutchinson catcher Elias Duncan made a web gem catch on a bunt attempt for the first out of the top of the second inning. Blue Dragons’ starting pitcher Noah McCombs got the final two outs of the frame.

Hutchinson batters went in order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second inning.

Garden City scored one run in the top of the third inning to cut the Blue Dragons’ lead to 6-1. Hutchinson did not score in the bottom of the third.

Hutchinson’s McCombs kept the Broncbusters scoreless in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.

Gardner belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Blue Dragons a 9-1 lead. Anthony Mazza made the score 10-1 with an RBI double.

In the top of the sixth inning, Hutchinson relief pitcher Gabe Perry snagged a line drive hit back to him and turned it into a double play.

Garden City scored one run in the top of the seventh inning to cut Hutchinson’s lead to 10-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mazza doubled and Reid sent everyone home with a two-run homer to make the final score 12-2. Reid has nine homers and 60 runs batted in this season.

Hutchinson is 34-17 overall and 15-13 Jayhawk West. Garden City is 28-23 overall and 8-20 in the Jayhawk West.

As the visitors on Friday, Hutchinson defeated Garden City 7-3 in the first game and 4-0 in the second game.

Hutchinson will travel to Arkansas City Monday for a 1 p.m. single game against the Cowley College Tigers. The game will be played at Tiger Ballpark.

Hutchinson’s final four-game Jayhawk West series will be played against Pratt.

The Blue Dragons and the Pratt Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Hutchinson and Pratt play a 1 p.m. doubleheader next Saturday at Stanion Field in Pratt.

HutchCC-Barton softball doubleheader postponed to Sunday

The Hutchinson-Barton softball doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday was postponed to Sunday because of rain.

The games will be made up at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday at Cougar Field in Great Bend.

Buhler JV girls soccer team fall 1-0 to Circle in Wichita Northwest JV Tournament championship game

The Buhler High School junior varsity girls soccer team lost 1-0 to the Towanda-Circle varsity team Saturday morning in the Wichita Northwest JV Tournament Gold Division championship game.

“I am proud of our girls,” said Buhler soccer coach Randall Rank on the BHS Girls Soccer Facebook page. “Four games in two days is a lot.  (We were) outplaying them for a majority of the match. I am proud of them and how well they played all weekend and how they carried themselves.

“They played Circle’s varsity team in the championship. Yes, the whole varsity team. Not (just) 1-2 players. They (the Buhler girls) shouldn’t hang their heads. Actually, they should be holding them high. It was a great experience for these girls and a second-place finish.”

Salthawk baseball team splits doubleheader at Salina South

The Hutchinson High School baseball team split a doubleheader at Salina South Friday night at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

Hutchinson (9-8) lost the first game 4-3 and won the second game 6-3.

In Game 1, Salina South scored the game-deciding run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a wild pitch.

Hutchinson scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score at 3-3.

Jack Davis took the loss for Hutchinson. He struck out four and walked none in seven innings. Salina South’s Jace Humphrey was the winning pitcher.

In Game 2, Carter Morgan was the winning pitcher for Hutchinson. He allowed five huts and three runs in six innings.

Jack Yoder led the Hutchinson offense with two hits.

The Salthawks play Salina Central Tuesday at Dean Evans Stadium. Hutchinson hosts Andale/Garden Plain and Haven on Friday.

Hutchinson Salthawk softball team drops two to Salina South

The Hutchinson High School Salthawk softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Friday night at Salina South.

The Salthawks (3-15) lost the first game 15-5 and the second game 9-8.

The Salthawks will host Andover Central and Kapaun Mount Carmel on Monday. Hutchinson returns to Salina on Tuesday to play Salina Central.

Hutchinson wraps up a busy week on Friday with a doubleheader at Derby.

Haven softball team sweeps Nickerson

The Haven High School softball team improved to 16-3 with a doubleheader sweep of Nickerson Friday night at home.

Haven won the first game 10-0 and the second game 16-1.

Haven hosts Wichita Trinity Academy on Monday.

Nickerson (2-14) hosts Ellsworth and Kingman/Norwich on Monday and Hillsboro on Friday.

Haven baseball team takes twinbill from Nickerson

The Haven High School baseball team defeated Nickerson 11-1 and 10-0 Friday night at home.

Haven improved to 14-3. Nickerson fell to 2-16.

Haven hosts Wichita Trinity Academy on Monday on Senior Appreciation Night.

The Haven Wildcats play Andale and Hutchinson Friday at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

Nickerson hosts Kingman/Norwich on Monday and Hillsboro/Peabody-Burns on Friday.

Salt City Racing opens 2nd season with several events

Salt City Racing’s second season opened on Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds track with competition in the USRA Heartland Modified Tour, A Modified and IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car divisions.

In the USRA Heartland Modified division, first-place finishers were Tanner Mullens, Wichita, A Feature 1; Treyton Gann, Ponca City, Okla., B Feature 1; Shadren Turner, St. Joseph, Mo., Heat 1; Troy Gemmill, Ponca City, Okla., Heat 2; Reece Solander, Emporia, Heat 3; Tanner Mullens, Wichita, Heat 4; Shadron Turner, Wichita, Qualifying 1; Reece Solander, Emporia, Qualifying 2.

In the IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car division, first-place finishers were Jeremy Huish, Jetmore, A Feature; Jeremy Campbell, Wichita, Heat 1; Jeremy Huish, Jetmore, Heat 2; Jeremy Campbell, Wichita, Qualifying.

Buhler girls track team first at home invitational

The Buhler High School girls track team placed first and the Buhler boys tied for third at the Buhler Invitational Friday night at Crusader Stadium.

The Crusaders girls scored 112 points and the Buhler boys tied Dodge City with 78 points. Valley Center edged Salina Central 87-83 for the boys team title.

The Hutchinson Salthawk girls placed 11th with 21 points and the Hutchinson boys 12th with 11 points.

First-place Buhler boys: Max Harmony, pole vault, 13-6; 

Second-place Buhler boys: Dexter Fleeman, high jump, 5-10; Scott Schweizer, pole vault, 11-6; Zach Friesen, 110 hurdles, 15.05.

Hutchinson Trinity boys track team 4th at Halstead’s Conrad Nightingale Invitational

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School boys track team tied for fourth place with the host Halstead Dragons Friday night at the Conrad Nightingale Invitational.

Moundridge edged Pratt 83-82 for the boys team title, followed by Hesston with 72 points.

The Halstead girls placed seventh with 47 points. Cheney and Hesston finished first and second with 95 and 83 points.

The Trinity Celtic boys placed first in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 8 minutes, 32 seconds.

Trinity’s Kaid McElgunn placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.21 seconds. 

Trinity’s Isaac Hammersmith placed second in the boys high jump, clearing the bar at 6-6. Moundridge’s Heath Churchill cleared 6-8 to placed first.

Hammersmith also placed second in the boys ling jump with an effort of 22-2 1/2. Sedgwick’s Noah Little placed first with a mark of 22-7 1/2.

Hutchinson Trinity runners Jacob Lindstrom, John Lindstrom and Cameron Kiser placed second, fifth and sixth in the 1600-meter run with times of 4:37.55, 4:54 and 4:57.37.

Jacob Lindstrom placed third in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:12.94, followed by Haven’s Isaiah Doherty in fourth place at 10:20.19.

The Halstead boys won the 4×100-meter relay with a time 43.91. Haven was fourth In 44.99 and Trinity was seventh in 45.62.

Halstead’s Breeson Bigley and Keaton Shields placed 1-2 in the 400-meter race with times of 50.9 and 51.49 seconds. Bigley was third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.24 seconds.

Halstead placed second in the boys 4×400 relay with a time of 3:30.04.

Halstead’s Annie Williams placed second in the girls 300 hurdles with a time of 49.71 seconds.

Buhler girls swim team placed 5th at Salina meet

The Buhler High School girls swimmers and divers competed at Salina, earning a fifth-place finish out of 11 teams.

Buhler’s team score was 262 points. The team has a small break until May 3 when the Crusaders swim at Maize. The Crusaders have three meets left for the season until hosting the ACTVL meet.

The Crusaders posted many personal records (PRs), records close to breaking and a state-qualifying swim.

The medley relay A took 4th place overall (Hannah Swain, Addy Tech, Aivlynn Ehmke and Reyne Kaufman. The B relay earned 20th (Cassidy Banning, Cathlyna Theriot, Payton Bal and Payton Thompson).

The 200 freestyle was next with Brayla Johnson taking 14th. Cathlyna Theriot took 19th and Cassidy Banning took 27th.

Hannah Swain earned third place in the 200 individual medley. Addy Tech placed 10th and Reyne Kaufman 11th.

In the 50 freestyle, Aivlynn Ehmke earned sixth overall, Grace Schmidt eighth and Payton Ball 19th.

Avery Schrader placed third in the 100 butterfly, Regan Walle eighth and Cathlyna Theriot 17th.

Grace Schmidt placed sixth in the 100 freestyle, Regan Walle 15th and Brayla Johnson 22nd.

Hannah Swain won the 500 free, earning a state-qualifying time of 5:57.13. Aivlynn Ehmke took third place and Reyne Kaufman was fifth.

The 200 A relay took fifth place (Avery Schrader, Addy Tech, Regan Walle, Grace Schmidt). The B relay took 23rd (Cora Nuttmann, Payton Thompson, Ava Schmidt, Payton Ball).

In the 100 backstroke, Avery Schrader finished in sixth place, Ava Schmidt 25th and Payton Thompson 27th.

Addy Tech led the team in the breaststroke, earning 10th place. Cassidy Banning earned 19th and Cora Nuttmann placed 26th.

Finally, in the 400 freestyle relay, the A relay took 3rd place overall, almost breaking a school record (Reyne Kaufman, Grace Schmidt, Hannah Swain and Aivlynn Ehmke). Buhler B took 11th (Brayla Johnson, Regan Walle, Cathlyna Theriot and Avery Schrader). The C Relay took 20th (Payton Ball, Cassidy Banning, Cora Nuttmann and Ava Schmidt).

Diving was not offered at this meet.
