Blue Dragon baseball team takes doubleheader from Broncbusters

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team swept a doubleheader from Garden City Community College Friday at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

Hutchinson won the first game 7-3 and took the second game 4-0.

The game was originally scheduled for Williams Stadium in Garden City, so the Blue Dragons were the visitors on the scoreboard. The Dragons will be the home team when the teams hook up at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday is Senior Recognition Day for the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson improved to 33-16 overall and 14-12 Jayhawk West. Garden City dropped to 27-22 overall and 7-19 in the Jayhawk West.

The winning pitchers for the Blue Dragons were Trenton Roehler (Game 1) and Lachlan Rosser (Game 2).

In Game 1, Hutchinson scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Anthony Mazza had an RBI double, Nick Glantz hit a two-run single and Taber Stokes aded an RBI single.

Glantz hit an RBI double to score Mazza from second base in the top of the fifth inning tomato the score 5-0.

In the top of the fifth, AJ Mustow’s 100th hit as a Blue Dragon is a two-run double to the right field gap. The Blue Dragons increased their lead to 7-0.

Garden City scored runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Blue Dragons’ lead 7-3. Sean Combs replaced Trenton Roehler on the mound for Hutchinson and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the Garden City threat.

Garden City loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning but did not score.

Glantz had two of the Blue Dragons’ six hits and had three of the team’s seven RBIs. Mustow drove in two runs. Mazza, CJ Reid and Glantz each scored two runs.

In the top of the first inning in Game 2, Mazza tripled down the right field line to give the Blue Dragons a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Mustow belted a two-out two-run homer over the centerfield fence to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Mustow tripled and Taber Stokes drove him home with an RBI single. Hutchinson led 4-0.

The Dragons stopped a Garden City rally in the bottom the eighth inning on a 6-3 double play started by CJ Reid, who stepped on third base in front of a Garden City baserunner and threw to first base.

Neither team scored in the ninth inning.

Rosser pitched seven innings for the Blue Dragons in Game 2. He allowed just two hits. He was replaced on the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning by Colin Flores.

The Blue Dragons and Broncbusters will return to Hobart-Detter Field for  a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.

Hutchinson will travel to Arkansas City Monday for a 1 p.m. single game against the Cowley College Tigers.

Hutchinson’s final four-game league series will be played against Pratt.

The Blue Dragons and the Pratt Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 1 at Hobart-Detter Field.

Hutchinson and Pratt play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 3 at Stanion Field in Pratt.

Buhler varsity, JV girls soccer teams post shutouts

The Buhler High School varsity girls soccer team posted a 7-0 shutout against Winfield Thursday night at Crusader Stadium.

Buhler improved to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III play. Winfield fell to 0-11-1 overall.

Natalya Krafels and Juliette Shank each scored two goals for the Crusaders’ varsity squad. Kennedee Applegate, Lakin Yoder and Mikaela Jarrett scored one goal apiece.

Shank and Taylin Krafels each had two assists. Natalya Krafels and Sydney Lehl each had one assist.

Buhler got a clean sheet (shutout) by Sammie Brooks, Josie Cummins and many defenders. 

The Crusaders’ varsity plays Circle Monday night at Towanda in an AVCTL III matchup.

Buhler JV girls soccer team to play for first place at Wichita Northwest JV tournament

The Buhler junior varsity girls (9-2-1) soccer team advanced to the championship game of the Wichita Northwest JV Invitational with two wins on Friday night.

Buhler defeated Wichita West 6-0 in the first round and Haysville-Campus 5-0 in the semifinals. The Crusaders will play Towanda-Circle in the 9:30 a.m. championship game on Saturday.

Kennedee Applegate scored the Crusaders’ first two goal in the victory over Wichita West off assists by Zoey Dick and Kylie Gregg.

Dick, Maycee Kimble, Bella Morones (unassisted) and Kyndahl Bortzfield scored the next four goals. Gregg, Applegate and KaAliyah Williams added assists.

Buhler goalkeepers Abigail Cummins and Rorey Waldren combined for a cleansheet (shutout).

In the semifinal victory over Campus, Applegate and Dick each scored two goals and Gregg scored the other. Caydence Anderson, Josie Cummins, Williams and Dick had assists. One of Dick’s two goal was on a penalty kick.

Waldren was the goalkeeper in the Campus match and posted a clean sheet (shutout).

The Crusaders’ junior varsity blanked Winfield 3-0 Thursday night in 30 minutes of play at Crusader Stadium. Dick scored one goal and assisted on goals by Gregg and Williams.

Cummins, Waldren and Buhler defenders teamed up for another clean sheet.

Hutchinson Middle School 7th grade boys track team places first at home invite

The Hutchinson Middle School 7th grade boys track team placed first at the Todd Thurston Invitational Thursday at Gowans Stadium with 109 points.

The HMS-8 girls tied for seventh place with 30 points, the HMS-7 girls placed seventh with 30 points and the HMS-8 boys placed ninth with 31 points.

Prairie Hills (Buhler) 8th grade boys placed fifth with 37 points, PH-7 girls placed sixth with 41 points, PH-7 girls tied for eighth with 24 points, and PH-7 boys 14th with 4 points.

Derby Middle School (79 points) edged out Great Bend Middle School (76) and Maize South Middle School (72) for the 8th grade girls title.

Maize South and Andover tied for first in the 7th grade girls competition with 78 points.

Maize South won the 8th grade boys title with 106 points and Maize placed second with 50 points.

First-place finishes for Hutchinson Middle School 7th grade boys: 800-meter sprint medley relay, 1:54.01; Gabriel Nava, 100-meter dash, 12.69 (edged out teammate Kendrick Green, who placed 2nd at 12.71); Green and Nava placed 1-2 in the 200-meter dash (25.75 and 25.84); 4×200-meter relay team, 1:49.58; 4×100-meter relay team, 49.45 seconds; Nava, high jump, 5-4; Green, long jump, 17-1 1/2. 

First-place for Hutchinson 8th grade girls: Danai Morgan, 200-meter hurdles, 29.88 seconds; Morgan, long jump, 15-6 1/2. Morgan broke the school record in the 200-meter hurdles and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.08 seconds.

First-place finishes for Prairie Hills 7th girls: Saraiyah Edmund. Shot put, 30-9 1/2; 

First-place finishes for Prairie Hills 8th boys: Sprint medley relay, 4:07.06; Tristan Roberts. 1600-meter run, 4:55.28.

Buhler baseball team ranked No. 8 in Class 4A, Haven No. 9 in Class 3A, Little River No. 3 in Class 2-1A

The Buhler High School baseball team (12-4) is No. 8 in Class 4A in the latest Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches rankings released on Friday.

The Haven High School baseball team (also 12-4) is ranked ninth in Class 3A.

Little River (14-0) is ranked third in Class 2-1A.

First-place teams are Olathe East, Class 6A; St. Thomas Aquinas, Class 5A; Topeka Hayden, Class 4A; Meriden-Jefferson West, Class 3A; and Hays-Thomas More Prep-Marian, Class 2-1A.

Other ranked teams of interest for area teams: Maize is ranked seventh in Class 6A; Bishop Carroll, Great Bend, Salina South, Maize South are ranked third, seventh, eighth and ninth in Class 5A; McPherson and Pratt are ranked third and 10th in Class 4A; Cheney and Hesston are ranked third and fourth in Class 3A; and Sedgwick is ranked second in Class 2A.

Former Blue Dragon DJ Dudley signs with Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

Louisiana Tech men’s basketball head coach Talvin Hester announced the signing of Dimitrius “DJ” Dudley, a transfer from Hutchinson Community College.

Dudley, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard from Inglewood, Calif., spent this past season at Hutchinson CC as a sophomore. He earned Second Team All-KJCCC honors. Prior to that, he spent his freshman campaign at Rider University.

“We are thrilled to welcome DJ to our program,” said Hester. “His ability to play on and off the ball on both ends, as well as score, make plays for others, and defend, will bring excitement to the TAC.”

Dudley made 28 starts for the Blue Dragons, averaging 14.3 points per game while shooting 44.2 percent from the field. He scored in double figures 26 times including five 20+ scoring performances.

Dudley’s best scoring effort came against Colby Community College, posting 29 points.

He also averaged 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game for Hutchinson.

As a freshman at Rider, Dudley averaged 5.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game over 28 games off the bench. His best performance came at Iona when he scored a season-high 28 points.

In high school, Dudley starred at LA Premier Prep where he posted a program-record seven triple-doubles, scored a program-record 45 points in a single game and set the program single-season record with 281 assists.

Dudley was a 2022 McDonald’s All-America nominee.
