Blue Dragon men’s golf team rallies to win Region 6 championship, Box wins 2-hole playoff for 1st place

The Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team rallied to capture the Region VI championship Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton with a two-day, three-round score of 880 (291-291-298). Hutchinson sophomore Charlie Box, who placed first the Jayhawk Conference tournament, is the Region VI individual champion. The Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team rallied to capture the Region VI championship Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton with a two-day, three-round score of 880 (291-291-298).

The Blue Dragons edged out second-place Dodge City by two strokes. 

The Conquistadors posted an 882 score (295-283-304), followed by Garden City 890 (296-301-293), Barton Community College 918 (308-304-306) and Coffeyville 1056 (366-338-362).

Hutchinson sophomore Charlie Box, who placed first the Jayhawk Conference tournament, is the Region VI individual champion. Box defeated Dodge City’s Rhys Nicholas in a two-hole playoff for first place.

Box (69-69-73) and Nicholas (69-70-72) posted 211 scores after 54 holes of regulation play.

Hutchinson’s Louis Ross placed fourth at 220 (70-74-76), followed by Jack Northgraves, tied for 14th, 228 (75-80-73); Jaydon Carruthers, tied for 16th, 229 (77-73-79); and David Razinkas, tied for 18th, 230 (79-75-76).

Hutchinson Blue Dragon individual players were Corey Scullion, tied for 8th, 225 (77-74-74); Cal Schultz, tied for 16th, 229 (75-75-79); and Tyler Walker, tied for 18th, 230 (75-75-79).

The Blue Dragon golfers will compete in the Central District Championship next Monday and Tuesday at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in KansasCity, Mo.

Sand Creek Station in Newton will be the site for the NJCAA Division I Championship May 13-16.

Blue Dragon baseball team romps past Sterling JV

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team romped past the Sterling College junior varsity baseball squad 26-0 (6 innings) on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

Hutchinson Community College improved to 31-16 overall.

Hutchinson collected 20 hits and Blue Dragon pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout. The Warriors committed eight errors.

Gabe Perry got the start on the mound for Hutchinson and recorded two outs on his first two pitches. Sterling JV doubled to put a runner on second base, but Perry got the third out on a pop-up.

Perry was replaced in the top of the third inning by AJ Doll, who struck out the side. Jake Wolcott replaced Doll and pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning. Beau Pasteur struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning.

The Blue Dragons scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Glantz, Leo Griffin and Scotty Fegen drove in runs.

Hutchinson scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Anthony Mazza doubled in a run, Griffin added a bases-loaded RBI single, Finn Hochstein hit a grand slam homer and Griffin hit a solo homer for an 11-0 lead.

Hutchinson added one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, four in the fifth and 10 in the sixth for the 26-0 final outcome.

The Blue Dragons will host Garden City Community College in a pair of 1 p.m. doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game originally was scheduled for Thursday at Garden City.

Hutchinson will travel to Tiger Ballpark in Arkansas City for a 1 p.m. single game Monday against the Cowley College Tigers.

Hutchinson’s final four-game league series will be played against Pratt.

The Blue Dragons and the Pratt Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 1 at Hobart-Detter Field.

Hutchinson and Pratt play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 3 at Stanion Field in Pratt.

HutchCC’s Bailey Backhaus, Barton’s Meleia Ingram earn KJCCC DI Softball Player of the Week honors

For the third time this season, KJCCC Division I Softball Player of the Week honors have gone to Hutchinson Community College’s Bailey Backhaus and Barton Community College pitcher Meleia Ingram.

Backhaus hit .722 at the plate last week while Ingram tossed a perfect game against Pratt.

Hutchinson’s Morgan Tomlinson was nominated for Pitcher of the Week.

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon softball team will play a noon doubleheader Wednesday at Dodge City. The doubleheader originally was supposed to be played at 3 p.m.
