Salthawk baseball team rolls past Andover Central

Hutchinson High School's team name (Salthawks) is not used by any other American high school.

Caiden Beavers drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Hutchinson Salthawk varsity baseball team past Andover Central 19-6 Thursday at Andover. 

Beavers had a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run single in the fifth inning.

The Salthawks got on the board in the top of the first inning with Beavers’ two-run double. JuJu Lyons hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored. After an error scored one run, Cole Bleything and Landon Parks hit RBI doubles.

A single by Carter Morgan extended the Salthawks’ lead to 7-4 in the top of the third inning.

Hutchinson scored nine runs on six hits in the top of the fifth inning.  Beavers singled in two runs, Lyons hit a sacrifice fly, Bleything singled in a run and Parks drew an RBI walk. Carter Morgan tripled in three runs and Jack Yoder doubled in one run.

Hutchinson amassed 17 hits. Bleything led Hutchinson with four hits in four at bats. Morgan and  Beavers each drove in four runs . Yoder collected two hits. Beavers stole two of Hutchinson’s five stolen bases.

Salthawks’ starting pitcher Jack Davis earned the win. He gave up seven hits and six runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings, struck out one and walked six. Bleything appeared in relief for Hutchinson.

Jet Thompson took the loss for the Jaguars. The southpaw went 2/3 of an inning. He allowed six runs on four hits, struck out none and walked two.

Jace Adler allowed four hits and six runs (three earned) over 2/3 of an inning. He stuck out one and walked one.

The Jaguars’ Maddox Archibald went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs. Carter Inslee collected two hits and Brody DeGarmo drew two of Andover Central’s six walks.

The Hutchinson Salthawks host Haysville Campus on Wednesday.

In other area sporting events Thursday:

• The Hutchinson varsity softball team swept a doubleheader from Wichita Heights Thursday at Fun Valley. The Salthawks won the first game 16-0 and the second game 13-1.

• The Hutchinson High School girls soccer team lost to Andover 3-1 Thursday night at Andover. The halftime score was 2-0.

• The Buhler varsity softball team swept Augusta 18-17 (8 innings) and 14-0 (5 innings) Thursday.

• The Buhler junior varsity softball team lost to Augusta 26-16.

• The Buhler varsity baseball team defeated Augusta 7-4 and 14-4.

• The Buhler baseball C team lost to McPherson 14-4.

• The Haven varsity baseball team lost two games against Larned Thursday at Haven. Larned won the first game 8-6 and the second game 7-2.

• The Haven varsity softball team swept a doubleheader from Larned Thursday at Haven. The Wildcats won the first game 17-2 and the second game 15-5.

Buhler varsity, JV soccer teams sweep Arkansas City

The Buhler varsity girls soccer team defeated Arkansas City 2-0 and the junior varsity won their match 5-0 at Crusader Stadium in Buhler.

The Buhler varsity team improved to 5-3 overall (3-0 in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League play.

“We’re getting a lot of opportunities,” said coach Randall Rank on the BHS Girls Soccer Facebook page. “We need to capitalize on a few more, but starting to play better. Several girls are playing and filling different spots tonight. Clean sheet by Sammie Brooks and the defense.”

Buhler’s Madi McCool scored on a penalty kick and Natalya Krafels scored on an assist by Alyssa Berner.

The Buhler JV improved to 6-2.

The goals were scored by Zoey Dick, Nevaeh Williams, Kennedee Applegate, Kalia McDowell and Maycee Kimble. Kylie Gregg had two assists and Dick had one assist.

“Clean sheet by the Cummins sisters (Abigail and Josie),” Rank said.

The next match “is a big one at Rose Hill” on Tuesday, added Rank.

Buhler boys 5th, Trinity 6th, Hutchinson 7th at Hutchinson tennis tournament

The Buhler, Hutchinson Trinity and Hutchinson boys squads placed fifth, sixth and seventh at the Hutchinson Salthawk Varsity Invitational Tennis Tournament Thursday at the Hutchinson Fairgrounds.

Dodge City Red won the team title with 30 points, followed by Garden City 28, Salina South 28, Dodge City White 19, Newton 18, Buhler 8, Hutchinson Trinity 7 and Hutchinson 1.

Buhler placed sixth in No. 1 singles (Ty Campbell), sixth in No. 1 singles (Clayton Schneider), seventh in No. 1 doubles (R. Ricker and L. Duscher) and seventh in No. 2 doubles (T. Ricker and C. Davis).

Hutchinson Trinity placed sixth in No. 1 doubles (Sam Madden and Vincent Wuertz) and fifth in No. 2 doubles (Ethan Harvey and Sam Pennycuff).

Hutchinson competed in No. 1 doubles (A.Johnson and S. Thompson) and placed seventh.

Hutchinson boys golf team places 10th out of 21 teams at Newton Invitational

The Hutchinson High School boys golf team placed 10th in the 21-team field Thursday at the Newton Invitational with a 369 score.

The tournament was played at the par-72 Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Maize South won the tournament with a 322 score, five strokes better than second-place Bishop Carroll.

Hutchinson’s top golfer was Mitchell Rice, who tied for 14th place with an 84.

Hutchinson’s Landyn Powell tied for 49th at 93, followed by Alex Haas and Maks Dreiling, tied for 66th, 96; Tate England, tied 105th, 112; and Chris Evans, 116th, 122.

Buhler golfers place 10th at WCS Invitational

The Buhler High School boys golf team placed 10th in the Wichita Collegiate School Invitational Thursday at the par-71 Tallgrass Country Club course.

The Crusaders and Augusta both posted 354 scores.

Buhler’s top golfer was Drew DeMeyer, who tied for 13th with an 82. Zach Chance tied for 24th, 85; Brennan Geilenfeldt, tied 44th, 92; Jace Heimerman, tied 54th, 95; Brayden Adams, 57th, 97; and Isaiah Heredia, 70th, 113.

Andover won the team title with a 319 score — four strokes better than second-place Wichita Collegiate.
