Blue Dragon baseball squad splits twinbill against Colby

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team managed a doubleheader split against Colby Community College Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

The Blue Dragons lost the first game 7-3. In the second game, Hutchinson trailed 7-0 after two innings, but outscored the Trojans 15-3 in the final five innings for a 22-10 victory.

In Game 1, Colby led 3-1 after two innings, 6-1 after three innings and 7-1 after five innings. Taber Stokes’ RBI single and Anthony Mazza’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth helped Hutchinson cut the deficit to 7-3.

Mazza had three hits for the Blue Dragons and Mustow two.

In Game 2, Colby jumped on the Dragons for four runs in the top of the first inning and three more in the top of the second for a 7-0 lead.

Hutchinson sent 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning and scored seven to tie the score at 7-7. Eli Duncan’s three-run homer tied the game. C.J. Reid and Quinn Maher had RBI singles and Nick Glantz had an RBI double during the rally.

Blue Dragon starting pitcher Sean Combs worked a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning.

Hutchinson took an 8-7 lead on Maher’s RBI double that scored Leo Griffin, who led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and stole second base. Reid gave Hutchinson an 11-7 lead with a three-run homer.

Duncan, Jack Gardner and Griffin were hit by pitches to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Blue Dragons. Mazza singled in two runs to give Hutchinson a 13-7 lead. Reid walked to re-load the bases and Colby changed pitchers.

The Blue Dragons scored seven more runs for a 20-7 lead after innings. Mustow belted a three-run homer and Griffin hit a two-run double in the outburst.

Colby scored three runs in the top of sixth inning to trail Hutchinson 20-10.

Reid gave the Blue Dragons a 22-10 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hutchinson improved to 29-15 overall, 11-11 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and 20-6 at home.

The Blue Dragons play a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Trojans on Saturday at Young Memorial Field in Colby.

Hutchinson hosts the Sterling College junior varsity at 2 p.m. on Turesday.

The Blue Dragons will host Garden City Community College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader next Thursday at Williams Stadium in Garden City and will host a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Broncbusters on April 26.

Hutchinson will travel to Tiger Ballpark in Arkansas City for a 1 p.m. single game against the Cowley College Tigers on April 28.

Hutchinson’s final four-game league series will be played against Pratt.

The Blue Dragons and Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 1 at Hobart-Detter Field, and then play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 3 at Stanion Field in Pratt.
