Blue Dragon golf team wins its sixth straight Jayhawk Conference championship

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon golf team shot an 876 total, including an 8-under-par 280 first round and 1-under-par-287 in the third round to win its sixth straight Jayhawk Conference championship.

The tournament was played at Colbert Hills Country Club in Manhattan and hosted by the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson sophomore Charlie Box is the conference champion. He scored a 13-under-par 212 (62-72-69).

Box shot a school-record and course-record-tying 62 in the opening round on Monday and led by 12 strokes after 18 holes.

Jack Northgraves placed fourth with 222 (73-78-72), Louis Ross eighth at 227 (74-78-75), David Razinkas tied for 13th at 231 (71-82-78) and Jaydon Carruthers 18th at 235 (82-81-72).

Blue Dragons playing independently were Corey Scullion sixth at 226 (75-74-77), Tyler Walker tied for 13th at 231 (tied for 13th with Ross, 73-78-80) and Cal Schultz 28th at 239 (91-84-74).

Hutchinson will compete in the Region 6 Championship next Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

The Central District Championship is April 28-29 at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo.

The NJCAA Division I Championship is May 13-16 at at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

HutchCC baseball team falls to Southeast CC

The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon baseball team lost to Southeast CC 13-11 Tuesday afternoon at Christensen Field in Beatrice, Neb.

Hutchinson’s Finn Hochstein belted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at 11-11.

The Beatrice Bobcats scored two more runs for the final 13-11 margin.

HutchCC (28-13 overall) hosts a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Colby Community College on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field and then plays a doubleheader against the Trojans at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Young Memorial Field in Colby.

Hutchinson hosts the Sterling College junior varsity at 2 p.m. on April 22.

The Blue Dragons host Garden City Community College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader April 24 at Williams Stadium in Garden City, and then will host a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Broncbusters on April 26.

Hutchinson will travel to Tiger Ballpark in Arkansas City for a 1 p.m. single game against the Cowley College Tigers on April 28.

Hutchinson’s final four-game league series will be played against Pratt.

The Blue Dragons and Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 1 at Hobart-Detter Field, and then play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 3 at Stanion Field in Pratt.

Salthawk girls soccer team falls, baseball team splits doubleheader, softball team swept

• The Hutchinson High School varsity girls soccer team played at Goddard Eisenhower Tuesday night. Eisenhower won the game 3-0. The Salthawks trailed at halftime 1-0. Hutchinson plays at Andover Thursday.

• The Hutchinson baseball team split a doubleheader against Maize South Tuesday at Maize. Maize won the first game 8-2 and the Salthawks won the second game 13-10.

• The Hutchinson Salthawk softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader against Maize South Tuesday at Maize. Maize South won the first game 16-1 and the second game 13-0.

• The Haven High School baseball team swept Remington 12-2 and 11-4 Monday night at Whitewater.

• The Inman baseball and softball teams swept Ell-Saline Tuesday at Ell-Saline. The Teuton softball team won Game1 18-1 and the second game 16-1.

The Inman baseball team won the opener 9-4 and took the second game 14-13. The baseball game was called at the end of five innings because the Ell-Saline field has no lights.

Hutchinson, Buhler girls swimmers place 4th, 5th at Newton Invitational

The Hutchinson and Buhler girls swim teams placed fourth and fifth at the Newton Invitational Tuesday.

Winfield won the Newton Invitational team title with 295 points, followed by Andover Central 274, Marion 169, Hutchinson 157, Buhler 144, Newton 1389, Valley Center 73 and Towanda-Cirdle 53.

• Hutchinson and Buhler A teams placed third and seventh in the 200-yard medley relay with times of 2:06.33 and 2:17. The Hutchinson relay team posted a state-qualifying time.

• Hutchinson’s Julianna Stivers placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 24.15 seconds and Buhler’s Reyne Kaufman placed ninth in 2:31.26.

• Hutchinson’s Alayna Wiggins placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:26.96. Buhler’s Hannah Swain and Alvlynn Ehmke placed sixth and ninth with times of 2:43.16 and 2:49.54.

• Hutchinson’s Morgan Most placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 28.8 second, Buhler’s Grace Schmidt placed fifth in 29.08 and Hutchinson’s Emma Buller placed seventh in 29.19.

• Buhler’s Ellie Keeton, Ellie Goering and Evey Brooks placed 2-3-4 in the 1-meter diving competition with 145.10, 142.30 and 141.95 points.

• Hutchinson’s Wiggins and AJ Gooch placed 2-5 in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 1:06.79 and 1:16.73. Wiggins posted a state qualifying time. Buhler’s Avery Schrader and Ehmke placed 7-8 with times of 1:17.85 and 1:20.16.

• Hutchinson’s Most placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:03.81.

• Hutchinson’s Buller placed eighth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:37.09.

• The Hutchinson and Buhler A teams placed fourth and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with times of 1:55 and 1:58.98.

• Buhler’s Swaim and Hutchinson’s Stivers placed third and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 1:08.6 and 1:12.34.

• Hutchinson’s Gooch placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a state quailing time of 1:14.29.

• The Buhler A team placed fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:37.16. Hutchinson’s A team placed 10th in 5:01.66.

Kaibryn Kruger named KJCCC Softball Player of the Week

Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon freshman center fielder Kaibryn Kruger is the KJCCC Division I Softball Player of the Week.

Kruger had a huge week in a 3-1 week for the KJCCC leading Blue Dragons, hitting .714 (10 for 14).

Kruger’s biggest game was in the back end of a doubleheader with No. 17-ranked Butler when the freshman went three-for-four with two home runs and four RBIs in the Blue Dragons’ 9-7 victory over the Grizzlies. 

Kruger hit a go-ahead two-run double in Hutchinson’s come-from-behind 8-5 win over Seward County on Sunday. Kruger had four multi-hit games, slugged 1.286 and had two stolen bases to raise her season total to 33.
