Salthawk girls soccer team blasts Salina Central 8-0

The Hutchinson High School varsity girls soccer team improved to 6-1 with an 8-0 victory over Salina Central Thursday at Salina.

The Salthawks, who led at halftime 6-0, have posted four shutouts in their last five games.

Junior Rhyhan Galyon recorded her second straight three-goal hat trick and added three assists. Azul Maciel scored two goals and had one assist.

Ayla Booe had one goal and two assists. Lily Rodriguez had one goal and one assist.

Victoria Parra scored one goal — her first varsity goal. Aylin Escobedo recorded one assist.

“The Salthawks demonstrated impressive ball movement during last night’s match, effectively connecting passes to create numerous goal-scoring opportunities,” said Hutchinson head girls soccer coach Jordan Proffitt. “The team’s depth was highlighted by five different goal scorers, showcasing the players’ skills in generating chances from all positions.

“Rhyan Galyon shone brightly, recording her second hat trick of the season with three goals throughout the game, while also creating multiple scoring opportunities for her teammates. Azul Maciel, Lily Rodriguez and Ayla Booe each contributed significantly, finishing the night with one or two goals as well.

“Younger Salthawk players also had the chance to shine on the varsity field, and they rose to the occasion. Notably, Victoria Parra scored her first varsity goal during the match.”

“Our girls really knocked the ball around well through the midfield, creating multiple chances which we were able to take advantage of,” said Salthawks’ assistant girls soccer coach Cidy Vargas. “It’s nice to go 2-0 this week as we gear up for a tough stretch of our schedule starting with two away games next week.”

The Hutchinson varsity and junior varsity teams will play Tuesday at Goddard Eisenhower and next Friday at Andover.

The next home games for the Salthawk varsity and junior varsity girls soccer teams are April 22 against Valley Center.

Buhler’s DeMeyer 1st, Hutchinson’s Rice tied for 3rd at McPherson golf invite; Crusaders 2nd, Salthawks 7th, Sterling 10th

Buhler High School’s Drew DeMeyer fired a 3-over-par 73 to win first-place medalist honors Thursday at the McPherson Invitational, and the Buhler boys placed second in the team standings with a 320 score — two strokes behind first-place Salina Sacred Heart.

Hutchinson’s Mitchell Rice tied for third place with a 78 and the Salthawks placed seventh in the team standings with a 355 score (same as Salina South).

Salina South’s Jackson Perry placed second with a 75. Salina Sacred Heart’s Will Tuttle tied for third with Rice. Teammate Dominic Matteucci and Winfield’s Drew Graham tied for fifth with 78s.

Winfield placed third at 339, followed by McPherson 347, Hays High 351 and Derby 352. Great Bend placed ninth at 358, followed by Sterling 375, Newton 388, El Dorado 390, Campus 396 and Arkansas City 405.

Buhler’s Zach Chance placed seventh with an 79, followed by Nick Chance in eighth place with an 80. Buhler James Dingler tied for 26th, 88; Brennan Geilenf, tied for 28th, 89; and Jace Heimerman, tied for 55th, 99.

Hutchinson’s Landyn Powell, tied for 32nd, 90; Maks Dreiling, tied for 40th, 93; Alex Haas, tied for 46th, 95; Tate England, tied for 58th, 100; and Brody Root, 76th, 116.

Sterling’s top golfer was Cameron Morris, who tied for 22nd with an 86. Wyatt Newberry for 34th, 91; Lane Weigel, 49th, 96; and Waylon Schmidt, tied for 62nd, 102.

Salthawk girls track 4th, boys 5th at Valley Center Invitational

Hutchinson High School’s KeiRre Martinez won the girls long jump competition and Camrynn Harris captured the boys 200-meter dash at the Valley Center Invitational track meet on Thursday.

Martinez long jumped 17 feet, 11 inches and Harris ran the 200 in 22.4 seconds.

The Salthawk girls track team placed fourth in the team standings with 74 points and the Salthawk boys tied for fifth with Andale with 52 points.

In the girls competition, Avery Tecklenburg placed second in the 800 (2:36.35) and 1600 (5:47.21).

The Salthawk girls 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams placed third (52.16 and 4:39.42). Madalyn Moore placed fourth in the triple jump (34-6).

Avery Meier, Martinez and Emma Wittekind placed 5-6-11 in the 100-meter dash (12.92, 12.95 and 13.75). Meier, Wittekind and Myleigh Mueller placed 6-9-10 in the 200 (28.01, 28.94 and 29.22).

Hutchinson’s Layni Hagley was sixth in the high jump (4-6). Mueller placed eighth in the 300-meter dash (1:10.54) and the high jump (also 4-6).

Ava Krone and Isabel Castaneda placed 5-6 in the 100-meter hurdles (17.15 and 17.66) and 7-9 in the 300 hurdles (53.14 and 56.12).

Kydra Gaines placed fifth in the discus (100-9), sixth in the shot put (30-3) and 13th in the javelin (77-1). Brianna Bueford placed 11th in the discus (87-7), 12th in the javelin (77-8) and 12th in the shot put (28-3).

In addition to winning the 200-meter dash, Camrynn Harris and Daniel Boone placed 2-6 in the 100-meter dash (11.03 and 11.24). Boone placed second in the long jump (21-7) and seventh in the triple jump (28-0).

The 4×400-meter relay team placed fifth (3:34.33).

Landon Nusser placed seventh in the pole vault (10-6) and ninth in the 200-meter dash (23.97).

Elias Delacruz placed seventh in the 800 (2:14.83) and Lalo Rodriguez was 11th in the (5:24.89).

Kaleb Cape placed third in the discus (124-0) and fourth in the shot put (41-1). Manuel Mora and Taylor Reimen placed 9-12 in the discus (113-9 and 103-0), Bailey Bishop and Jaiden May placed 7-9 in the shot put (40-5 1/2 and 40-0) and Mora and Bishop placed 17-18 in the javelin (96-0 and 87-1).

Valley Center won the boys team title with 154.5 points, edging out second-place Garden City, which scored 150.5 points. Newton placed third with 138, followed by Moundridge with 107. Wichita Southeast placed seventh with 33 points.

Garden City won the girls team title with 165 points. Valley Center placed second with 142 and Newton placed third with 134. Moundridge placed fifth with 67.5 points. Andale was sixth with 63.5.

Sterling 2nd, Trinity 7th at Hillsboro boys tennis tournament

The Sterling High School boys tennis team placed second and the Hutchinson Trinity Celtics placed seventh at Thursday’s Hillsboro Boys Invitational.

Smoky Valley won the team title with 57 points, followed by Sterling 47, Hoisington 42, Circle 40, Classical School of Wichita 38, Conway Springs 35, Hutchinson Trinity 18 and Hillsboro 8.

Sterling’s Jace Darnauer captured the No. 1 singles title and Isaac Sant placed fourth in No. 2 singles.

Teammates Ben Bierstedt and Zac Wohler placed third in No. 1 doubles and Trace Deshon and Noah Drinnen placed fifth in No. 2 doubles.

For Hutchinson Trinity, Sam Madden placed fifth at No. 2 singles and Vincent Wuertz placed sixth at No. 1 singles.

The Celtics’ No. 1 doubles team of Sam Pennycuff and Ethan Harvey placed seventh. Trinity only has four players on the roster and does not have a No. 2 doubles team.

Smoky Valley finished first at No. 1 doubles (Zeke Baker and Gabe Baker), first at No. 2 doubles (Jack Bieker-Pierce Keller), third at No. 1 singles (Crew Elliott) and third at No. 2 singles (Isaac Ayala) to win the team title.

The Hutchinson Trinity boys tennis team competes at the Hutchinson Invitational at 10 a.m. next Thursday.

Buhler girls swim and dive team places 8th at Campus meet

The Buhler High School girls swim and dive team placed eighth out of 13 teams Thursday at the Campus Invitational in Haysville with 172 points.

“It was a really big meet with a lot of different competition,” said Buhler swim coach Shane DeWeese on the team’s Facebook page. “Many girls competed in events they have not since the beginning of last year or even longer.

“It was a solid finish for the team against some really big teams. It showed the girls some really good results and improvement.”

In the medley relay, the Buhler C team of Payton Thompson, Cassidy Banning, Ava Schmidt and Cora Nuttmann took 23rd place overall. 

“Unfortunately, there were some struggles for the other relays in this event but something to learn from,” DeWeese said.

In the 200-yard freestyle was next. Addy Tech placed 14th, Evey Brooks took 29th and Ava Schmidt placed 33rd

Avery Schrader earned ninth place in the 200 individual medley. Ragen Walle finished 18th, Cassidy Banning 23rd and Ellie Keeton 24th.

In the 50 freestyle, Reyne Kaufman earned 19th overall, Addy Tech 24th and Brayla Johnson 37th. “There were over 70 girls in this event alone,” DeWeese said.

Evey Brooks, Ellie Goering and Ellie Keeton placed 6-7-8 respectively in diving. 

Brayla Johnson placed 13th in the 100 butterfly, with Cathlyna Theriot on her heels at 14th.

Hannah Swain placed second in the 100 freestyle, earning another state consideration time. Aivlynn Ehmke took sixth and Cathlyna Theriot in 31st, with over 50 entries.

Aivlynn Ehmke placed fifth in the 500 freestyle. I was her first time swimming this race in two years. Avery Schrader took eighth and Grace Schmidt earned 11th.

The 200 relay was a battle, with the A team of Reyne Kaufman, Ragen Walle, Addy Tech and Ellie Goering placing 13th. The B relay of Ellie Keeton, Payton Thompson, Payton Ball and Cathlyna Theriot took 25th .

In the 100 backstroke, Reyne Kaufman took 13th place, Ellie Goering 26th and Payton Thompson 35th 

Hannah Swain led the team in the breaststroke, earning ninth place. Regan Walle finished in 21st place. 

In the 400 freestyle relay, the A relay of Aivlynn Ehmke, Avery Schrader, Grace Schmidt and Hannah Swain took seventh place overall.

The Buhler B team of Evey Brooks, Ragen Walle, Ellie Goering and Brayla Johnson took 12th.

The C relay of Ellie Keeton, Cassidy Banning, Cathlyna Theriot and Payton Ball placed 15th.

Buhler will compete Tuesday at the Newton Invitational.

Blue Dragon baseball team splits Thursday doubleheader at Butler

The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons and Butler Community College Grizzlies squared off Thursday in a crucial Jayhawk Conference baseball doubleheader at McDonald Stadium in El Dorado.

Butler CC scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the first game 4-3.

In Game 2, Hutchinson scored one run in the top of the eighth inning and five more in the top of the ninth inning and held off the Grizzlies 9-6 for a twinbill split.

Hutchinson CC is 27-12 overall and 9-9 in the Jayhawk Conference. Butler is 22-16 overall and 13-9 in league play.

Hutchinson starting pitcher Trenton Roehler took the loss for the Blue Dragons in the first game and his record dropped to 3-2. Roehler allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out five.

Grizzlies’ relief pitcher Bradyn McClure got the Game 1 win in relief of Butler CC starter Maddux Schrupp. They allowed just five hits, including a two-run homer by Hutchinson’s Leo Griffin.

Colin Flores saved the victory for the Blue Dragons in Game 2 in relief of starting pitcher Noah McCombs and relief pitcher Brandt Phillips (who got his first victory).

Hutchinson pounded out 12 hits in Game 2 off six Butler hurlers, including nine by the 3-4-5-6 hitters Anthony Mazza, CJ Reid, AJ Mustow and Nick Glantz.

The Blue Dragons host the Grizzlies in a 1 p.m. twinbill Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.

HutchCC plays a 2 p.m. single-game on Monday against Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb.

The Blue Dragons host a 1 p.m. doubleheader next Wednesday against Colby Community College and then play a doubleheader against the Trojans at 1 p.m. on April 19 at Young Memorial Field in Colby.

Hutchinson hosts the Sterling College junior varsity at 2 p.m. on April 22.

The Blue Dragons host Garden City Community College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader April 24 at Williams Stadium in Garden City, and then will host a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Broncbusters on April 26.

Hutchinson will travel to Tiger Ballpark in Arkansas City for a 1 p.m. single game against the Cowley College Tigers on April 28.

Hutchinson’s final four-game league series will be played against Pratt. The Blue Dragons and Beavers play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 1 at Hobart-Detter Field, and then play a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 3 at Stanion Field in Pratt.

HutchCC’s Morgan Tomlinson is KJCCC Softball Pitcher of the Week

Hutchinson Community College sophomore pitcher Morgan Tomlinson was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Tomlinson tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed just one hit in that span to lead the Blue Dragon softball team to a 4-0 week.

Tomlinson worked the first three innings of a combined no-hitter vs. Fort Hays Tech Northwest in a 23-0 victory last Wednesday. Tomlinson struck out seven in four innings.

Tomlinson then earned her 29th career Blue Dragon victory with four shutout innings against Friends JV on Sunday. She allowed one hit and struck out four over four innings.

Haven, Little River baseball teams ranked by KABC

The Haven Wildcats are ranked ninth in the Class 3A and Little River is ranked 10th in Class 2-1A in the latest rankings from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches.

No. 1 teams in the poll are Lawrence Free State, Class 6A; St. Thomas Aquinas, Class 4A; McPherson, Class 4A; Wichita Trinity Academy, Class 3A; and Valley Falls, Class 2-1A.

No. 2 teams are Olathe East, Class 6A; Shawnee Heights, Class 5A; Topeka Hayden, Class 4A; Cheney, Class 3A; and Pittsburg-St.Mary-s Colgan, Class 2-1A.

Haven Wildcats’ softball team powers past Pratt

The Haven softball team swept a doubleheader from Pratt last Tuesday (April 8).

Senior Sophie Faidley belted three home runs (including a grand slam) and junior Morgan O’Neal belted one home run  In the doubleheader.

Haven, coached by Darin Ashworth, improved to 8-1.

Sports in Kansas highlights Inman sophomores

Sports in Kansas highlighted Inman High School sophomores Ellie Thimmesch and Lyla Levin, who hit home runs Tuesday night in Inman’s sweep against Canton Galva (24-0, 15-0).

Levin is 2-0 in the circle this season with Thimmesch catching for her.

Levin has 14 strikeouts in 2 games this season and has yet to allow a run to score with an earned run average of 0.00.
