Hutchinson Salthawk baseball team takes two from Derby

Hutchinson High School's team name (Salthawks) is not used by any other American high school.

The Hutchinson High School baseball team swept a doubleheader from Derby Tuesday at Derby, winning the first game 8-3 and the second game 7-2.

The Salthawks scored one run in the second inning on a wild pitch.

Derby’s Connor Burget tied the game at 1-1 on a groundout in the bottom of the second. The Panthers broke up the tie on an error by Hutchinson. An RBI single by Hudson Halstead followed and extended the Derby lead to 3-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Hutchinson went back into the lead after Gabe Valadez singled to center field, Jack Davis walked, Derby committed an error, JuJu Lyons singled and Jack Yoder was struck by a pitch, each scoring one run.

Valadez earned the win for the Salthawks. He allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings. Valadez struck out three and walked none. Landon Parks collected the save for the Salthawks.

The Salthawks had 11 hits in the game. JuJu Lyons led Hutchinson with two RBIs from the No. 9 spot in the lineup. The infielder went 2-for-3.

Carter Morgan and Valadez each collected three hits for Hutchinson. Caiden Beavers added two hits.

Jace Hambleton took the loss for Derby. The right-handed pitcher went 4 1/3 innings, allowed five runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked one.

Rowan Foster, Halstead, Cooper Williams, Talon Cunningham and Brodie Kinerman each collected one hit for Derby. Halstead and Burget each drove in one run.

In the second game, the Salthawks got on the board in the first inning when Beavers singled in a run. Hutchinson added one run in the third on a Derby error.

The Salthawks scored five runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning.

Lyons tripled in one run, Carter Morgan doubled in a run, Yoder hit a sacrifice fly, Valadez singled in a run and Cole Bleything singled in a run.

Morgan earned the win for the Salthawks. He gave up two hits and one run over five innings, struck out five and walked four. Parks collected his second save of the doubleheader. Beavers also appeared in relief for the Salthawks.

Morgan and Beavers each collected two hits for Hutchinson. Bleything, Yoder, Morgan, Beavers, Lyons and Valadez each drove in one run. Beavers stole three bases. Hutchinson stole six bases.

Hutchinson turned one double play.

Rowan Foster took the loss for Derby. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out four and walking two.

Jace Hambleton and Williams each had one hit for Derby. Williams and Burget each drove in one run. Halstead had two of Derby’s eight walks.

The Salthawk baseball team hosts Valley Center on Friday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Valley Center swept Andover 12-2 and 8-2 Tuesday night.

Hutchinson varsity girls soccer team beats Newton 3-1

The Hutchinson High School varsity girls soccer team posted a 3-1 victory over Newton Tuesday night at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Salthawks led at halftime 2-0.

The Hutchinson varsity soccer team (5-1) will play a 6:15 p.m. game at Salina Central Thursday and will host Valley Center on Friday.

Buhler varsity, JV soccer teams post shutouts against Augusta

The Buhler High School varsity girls soccer team shut out Augusta 3-0 and the Crusader junior varsity squad posted a 2-0 shutout against the Orioles Tuesday night.

Both victories were Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League III wins for the Crusader teams.

Buhler’s varsity goal keeper Sammie Brooks, JV goal keeper Josie Cummins and the Crusader defenders in both games posted clean sheets (shutouts).

Madi McCool, Mikaela Jarrett and Alyssa Berner scored the varsity goals. Juliette Shank and McCook each had assists.

Zoey Dick and KaAliyah Williams scored the Buhler JV goals.

The Buhler varsity team improved to 3-2 and the JV team is 4-1. The Crusaders host Valley Center on Thursday.

• The Hutchinson High School softball team lost two run-rule games at Maize 18-0 and 13-2 Tuesday night.

• The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic baseball team was swept in a Tuesday night doubleheader at Marion. The Celtics lost to Marion 6-2 in the first game and 5-4 in the second game.

• The Buhler High School softball team swept a road doubleheader Monday, defeating El Dorado 12-0 and 9-3. The Crusader softball team improved to 7-3 and will host Clay Center/Wakefield on Friday.

• The Buhler baseball team on Monday swept a doubleheader from El Dorado 1-0 (10 innings) and 5-1. The Crusader baseball team improved to 7-3 and will host Clay Center/Wakefield on Friday.

• The Halstead varsity baseball team swept Nickerson Tuesday night. The Dragons won the first game 8-7 in nine innings and claimed the second game 12-2 in five innings.

• The Halstead Dragons softball team swept a doubleheader from Remington Monday 10-6 and 13-6. On Tuesday, Halstead swept Nickerson 15-0 and 15-0.

• The Halstead JV baseball team split a doubleheader Monday against Nickerson. Halstead won the first game 6-4 and Nickerson won the second game 12-2.
