The Hutchinson Salthawk girls soccer team defeated the Wichita East Blue Aces 4-0 Saturday and swept their three opponents at the Wichita South Titan Classic tournament.

Two years ago on the same field at the Wichita South Titan Classic, Hutchinson and Wichita East went into an eight-round penalty shootout with the Salthawks winning in dramatic fashion.

The Salthawks led Wichita East 2-0 at halftime.

The Salthawk outscored their three Titan Classic opponents 10-0. Hutchinson, which posted 3-0 victories over Classical School of Wichita (last Sunday) and Emporia on Wednesday, improved to 4-1.

Junior Azul Maciel scored two goals, junior Rhyan Galyon had one goal and one assist, senior Ayla Booe scored one goal, and senior Lily Rodriguez recorded one assist. It was Booe’s first goal of the season and it came off Galyon’s assist.

Hutchinson’s sophomore goalkeeper, Baleigh Cousins, and the back line of Aylin Escobedo, Kate Jackson, Alayniah Johnson and Mia Vega recorded their third consecutive shutout.

“It was a cold, windy and snowy/rainy game,” said Hutchinson High School girls soccer coach Jordan Profitt, who is assisted by Cidy Vargas. “Azul Maciel scored 10 minutes into the game from a free kick coming from the hard work of Lily Rodriguez to win the ball.

“Shortly after, Rhyan Galyon breaks free for a 1v1 (one-on-one) with the goalkeeper slotting it past her, Lily Rodriguez made a nice through-ball. The Salthawks went into the half up 2-0.

“In the second half, Azul Maciel found the net once more off another free kick. To top off the scoring, Ayla Booe recorded her first goal of the season with an assist from Rhyan Galyon. The girls battled and played through unlikely weather conditions.”

The Salthawks lost their first match of the season 1-0 at Andover Central on March 25 and defeated Buhler 3-2 on March 27 at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Hutchinson hosts Newton on Tuesday and Salina Central on Thursday.

Wichita East fell to 0-4. The Blue Aces host Wichita Northwest on Tuesday.

Hutchinson girls soccer team beats Emporia 3-0

In Wednesday’s match against Emporia, the Salthawks took control early against the Spartans.

Senior central midfielder Lily Rodriguez opened up the scoring. Junior Giselle Rodriguez won the ball in the box, played a back pass to Rodriguez who placed a perfectly hit shot into the top right corner for her first goal of the season.

Junior Rhyan Galyon took a pass from junior Ayla Booe on a quick counter. Galyon cut inside the box and fired a left-footed shot past the Spartan goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.

The third goal of the half came off the right foot of junior Azul Maciel, similar to her goal Monday. Maciel took a pass from Galyon and from about 30 yards out smashed a shot past Emporia’s goalkeeper into the top left corner.

“This team continues to gel early in the season,” said assistant coach Cidy Vargas. “The second half was more of the same, the Salthawks pressed time and time again but were unable to find the back of the net. Normally the 3-0 victory would be enough to walk away feeling satisfied.

“Of course the win is important and well-earned,  but in the new format of this year’s Titan Classic winning all three games probably won’t be enough for a first’-place finish as the schedule is predetermined and goal differential is a tie-breaking factor. Nevertheless the Salthawks won their third straight game.”
