Four Trinity Catholic seniors will close out their high school theater careers this weekend in the adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.”
Margaret Carroll, Michael Glenn and Mary Newboles will take their final bows, while Maryana Flores will operate the stage lights for the last time.
“Treasure Island” follows young Jim Hawkins as he finds a treasure map, joins a sailing expedition, and faces treacherous pirates led by Long John Silver. Adventure, betrayal, and buried treasure unfold as Jim fights for survival and the ship’s control.
Sophomore Audrey Wilson takes the lead as Jim. This is her sixth show on the Trinity stage.
“I like playing [Jim]. He reminds me of me in some ways. This is the first time I’ve played a main character,” she said.
When asked what she wanted the audience to know about the show, she said, “I want them to know how hard we worked on this and how amazing it is going to be.”
Senior Michael Glenn plays Long John Silver in his final theatrical production at Trinity. “Treasure Island” is his ninth stage appearance in his four-year high school career. The founder and publisher of The Hutchinson Tribune will attend the University of Kansas and major in journalism this fall.
“I’ve had a lot of fun. This is a character unlike any I’ve played before. John is cunning and very smart. He always finds a way out of trouble,” he said.
Senior Mary Newboles will also graduate in May. She will attend Fort Hays State University with a major in Biology (Pre-med) and possibly a minor in theater. She participated in theater all four years of high school. “Treasure Island” will be her eleventh production.
“Senior year is full of last experiences,” she said. Out of every last one, this is the nearest to my heart. It is going to be the hardest one to let go of because of everything we accomplished.”
Trinity Theater Director Karin Neal said, “It has been fun to watch Mary and Michael grow as actors and leaders and take on different roles.”
“We chose ‘Treasure Island’ because it’s an action adventure. It’s fun, and it’s something more serious. It is about Jim growing up, leaving home and finding adventure,” she said.
“Treasure Island” opens on Thursday and runs through Saturday. Showtime is 7 p.m., and doors open at 6:30. All seating is reserved, and admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
Tickets can be pre-purchased online at On The Stage. If the evening’s performance is not sold out, tickets may be available at the door.
