The season came to an end for Hutchinson High School Salthawk boys basketball team with a 48-43 loss to Hays in the Kansas Class 5A sub-state #3 semifinals Wednesday night at the Hays High gymnasium.
Hutchinson finished the season with a 10-11 record. Hays (13-8) will play in the 5A sub-state finals against Andover (18-3) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Andover.
Andover (18-3) defeated Salina Central 61-44 Wednesday at Andover.
The Salthawks led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime, led by senior Terrell King with 14 points. King fired in a 3-pointer with time running out in the first half for the 5-point intermission lead.
Hutchinson led Hays 35-31 at the end of the third quarter. Hays outscored the Salthawks 17-8 in the fourth quarter.
King led the Salthawks with 22 points. Taishaun Govain scored 9 points. Jalen Crable and Lamar Govain each scored 4 points. Tramel Walker and Levi Kepler each scored 2 points.
Johnny Cano led the Hays High boys with 13 points. including 6 free throws in the fourth quarter. Dawson Ruder scored 12 points.
Buhler girls blast Abilene to advance to 4A sub-state finals
The Buhler High School Crusader girls advanced to the Class 4A West sub-state #2 finals Saturday with a 62-41 victory over Abilene Wednesday night at the Jim Baker Fieldhouse in Buhler.
Buhler led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, 33-15 at halftime and 51-29 at the end of the third quarter. Abilene outscored Buhler 12-11 in the fourth quarter.
Buhler improved to 17-4 and will play Towanda-Circle at 5 p.m. Saturday in the West sub-state #2 championship. Circle (10-11) upset Pratt 45-40 in a semifinal game at Pratt.
The sub-state championship game will be played in Buhler.
• In a Kansas 2A girls sub-state game Wednesday, Inman defeated Berean Academy 36-23 to advance to the championship game Saturday at Moundridge against Bennington.
Bennington defeated Classical School of Wichita 49-25 Wednesday at the Bennington gymnasium.
Haven boys to play Cheney for Halstead 3A sub-state title Saturday night
The Haven High School boys basketball team defeated Wichita Collegiate 55-42 in the Kansas Class 3A Halstead sub-state #1 semifinals and will advance to the championship game.
The Wildcats (19-3) will play Cheney at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the title game at the Halstead High School gymnasium.
Dalton Bontrager (25) and Nash Wray (22) combined for 47 of Haven’s 55 points. Bontrager made five 3-pointers and grabbed 7 rebounds. Wray hit four 3-pointers and made 6-of-7 free throws. Wray and Gatlin Rinehart each had 4 assists.
Kamari Jennings led the Collegiate Spartans with 17 points. AJ Bastiste added points.Jaden Parker had 5 assists and 9 rebounds.
The Cheney boys defeated Garden Plain 64-46 in the other Halstead #1 sub-state semifinal game.
The Halstead sub-state #2 finals Saturday will feature Hesston vs. Council Grove. In the semifinals Wednesday, Hesston defeated Marysville 53-36 and Council Grove defeated Nemaha Central 64-58.
Hutchinson senior Jacob Bofink places 25th at 5A boys state bowling
Hutchinson High School senior Jacob Bofink placed 25th at the Kansas Class 5A state bowling tournament Wednesday after at Bowlero Northrock Wichita.
Bofink, who placed 19th at last year’s 5A state bowling tournament, bowled a 620 series (221-187-212).
Five bowlers posted 700+ series to place first through fifth.
Andover Central’s Paxton McLeod placed first with a 746 series, edging out Kansas City Piper’s Coltyn Bard at 744 and Maize South’s Tristan Coffey 739, Andover Central’s Dayden Cunningham 723 and Andover’s Madden Pumphrey 722.
Pumphrey bowled a perfect 300 game.
Andover Central won the 5A state title with a 3648 series.
The Buhler High School boys and girls bowling teams compete in the Kansas Class 4-1A state tournament Thursday at Bowlero Northrock Wichita.
