Buhler High School’s Macey Parks decisioned Chapman’s Taya Rowley 6-5 for the Class 4A girls 145-pound state championship and reached the 100-win plateau in doing so.
The Class 5A boys and girls state tournaments took place at Park City, the Class 4A boys and girls wrestled in Salina and the Class 3-1A state meets took place in Hays.
In Class 5A state boys and girls at Park City Arena, Hutchinson High School’s Kade Smith finished his Salthawk career with a third-place showing in the 165-pound weight class. With a 4-1 state tournament record, Smith tied Romero Cotton for first-place on the all-time Salthawk win list with 136.
Hutchinson sophomore Max Harris placed third at 157 pounds with a 4-1 record. Senior Skylar Ray placed third at 215 pounds with a 1-2 record.
Cruz Cannon placed fifth in the Class 5A boys 113-pound weight class with a 3-2 record.
Freshman Aaida Brown captured sixth place in the Class 5A girls 100-pound weight class with a 3-3 record.
Not placing at state for Hutchinson were freshman Alexa “Lexi” Lewis, 105-pound girls (0-2); freshman Dion Brown, 106-pound boys (0-2); and junior Jackson Anderson, 175-pound boys (1-2).
In the Class 4A boys 132-pound championship match, Buhler’s Sammy Hershberger lost to Abilene’s Noah Wuthnow and placed second.
In the 144-pound championship match, Buhler’s Cruz Hershberger was major decisioned by Rose Hill’s Johnny Leck 16-4 and placed second.
Luke Kerns, a Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School junior wrestling for Buhler, placed fifth at 165 pounds. He pinned Rose Hill’s Tyren Emberson at the 4:36 mark in the fifth-pace match.
Buhler’s Lillie Ledford and Maliyah Jackson also competed and did not place.
In Class 4A girls 130 pounds, Halstead’s Kahlyn Davis placed second. She lost a 7-3 decision in the championship match to Pratt’s Wendy Candia. Davis pinned her first two opponents, defeated her quarterfinal opponent 11-2 and won in the semifinals.
In Class 4A girls 235 pounds, Nickerson junior Elizabeth Dick placed third. She pinned Baldwin’s Finnley Kellerman in the third-place match.
Halstead 285-pound senior Connor Herman placed sixth in Class 4A boys. Ava Armstrong and Clayton Considine both lost in the consolation rounds and did not place.
In the Class 3-1A boys state tournament at Hays, Haven senior Jacob Moore placed third with a 13-8 win over Mound City-Jayhawk Linn’s Denton White.
Teammate Tanner Loughrie placed sixth at 132 pounds. He was major decisioned 8-0 in the fifth-place match by Hill City’s Alexander Hamel.
In the Class 3-1A girls’ state meet at Hays, Sterling freshman Jacynn Boeken placed fourth. She lost to Leoti-Wichita County’s Jentri Porter in the third-place match.
Hutchinson, Buhler boys, girls basketball teams get sub-state assignments
The Hutchinson (Class 5A) and Buhler (4A) girls and boys basketball teams got their sub-state assignments when the KSHSAA announced the pairings Saturday morning.
Class 6A sub-state pairings also were announced.
In the Class 5A West G Newton sub-state #1 semifinals, the Hutchinson High School girls (14-6) will host Andover Central (13-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Salthawk Activity Center.
In the other Class 5A West G Newton sub-state #1 semifinal matchup, Hays High (20-0), the No. 1 overall seed in 5A, will Great Bend (6-14).
The winners will play at 7 p.m. Friday for a 4A state tournament berth.
In the Class 5A West B sub-state semifinals, Hutchinson (10-10) is the No. 11 seed and will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hays High (12-8).
In the other semifinal, Andover (17-3) will host Salina Central (8-12) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The sub-state championship game is 5 p.m. next Saturday. The sub-state champion advances to the state tournament.
In the Class 4A West G sub-state #2 semifinals, the Buhler girls (16-4) are the No. 2 seed and will host Abilene (3-17) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Jim Baker Fieldhouse.
In the other sub-state #2 semifinal Pratt (11-9) hosts Towanda-Circle (9-11) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The winners will play at 5 p.m. next Saturday for a 4A state tournament berth.
In the Class 4A sub-state West B #4 semifinals, the 12th-seeded Buhler boys (6-14) will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Wellington (14-6) and Abilene (14-6) hosts Mulvane (6-14) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The sub-state #4 championship game is at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Kansas state high school basketball tournaments are scheduled for March 12-15: Class 6A at Wichita State University Koch Arena, 5A at Emporia’s White Auditorium, 4A at Salina’s Tony’s Pizza Events Center, 3A at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, 2A at Kansas State University’s Bramlage Coliseum, 1A DI at Dodge City’s United Wireless Arena and 1A DII at the Colby Event Center.
