Salthawk girls, boys fall to Andover

Hutchinson High School's team name (Salthawks) is not used by any other American high school.

The Hutchinson High School girls and boys basketball team were swept by Andover Thursday night at Andover.

The Hutchinson girls lost 54-42 and the Salthawk boys lost 65-54.

The Salthawk girls trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, 26-18 at halftime and 41-23 after three quarters. Hutchinson outscored the Trojans 19-11 in the fourth quarter.

Kaia Smith and Grace Posch led the Salthawks with 17 points apiece. Kohlbie Craft scored 4, Ava Krone 3 and Tenley Keeton 1.

Asiah Sullivan and Grier Hand each scored 14 points for the Trojan girls. Aliyah Green added 13.

The Hutchinson girls dropped to 13-6. The Trojans improved to 19-1.

“Grace and Kaia had 17 points apiece and we battled with Andover tonight on the road,” said Hutchinson girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst. “We have the regular season finale at Salina South tomorrow (Friday). I just hope we have enough legs for it.”

In the boys game, Hutchinson led 17-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 33-28 at halftime. Andover led 53-44 at the end of the third quarter and outscored Hutchinson 12-10 in the fourth quarter.

Lamar Govain led the Salthawks in scoring with 18 points. Terrell King scored 13 points and Taishaun Govain 9.

The Hutchinson boys made just 5-of-18 free throw attempts.

“We did a good job to start the game,” said Hutchinson boys basketball coach Bryan Miller during his postgame radio interview. “I think we played heard the whole game, but we only executed for 24 minutes. The free throw shooting and turnovers hurt us.”

The Hutchinson boys dropped to 9-10. Andover improved to 17-3.

The Hutchinson girls and boys teams will play makeup games Friday night at Salina South. The Salina South girls are 9-10 and the Cougar boys have a 7-13 record.

Sub-state pairings for Kansas Class 5A will be announced Saturday morning by the KSHSAA.

Hutchinson Trinity Celtic boys advance to Moundridge sub-state semifinals against Ell-Saline

In a Class 2A boys Moundridge sub-state first round matchup Thursday night at Whitewater, the Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School boys basketball tam upset Remington 45-42 in double overtime.

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic improved its record to 8-13. Remington finished the season with a 13-8 record.

The Trinity Celtics will play Ell-Saline in the sub-state semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brookville. Ell-Saline defeated Sedgwick 57-35 Thursday at Brookville.

The Inman boys lost to No. 1-seed Salina Sacred Heart 58-43 in another Moundridge 2A sub-state game Thursday at Salina. Inman finished the season with a 3-17 record.

Salina Sacred Heart improved to 19-0. The Knights will host Bennington at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals. Bennington (14-7) defeated Solomon 52-41 in the first round of sub-state Thursday.

Buhler Crusader girls, boys both fall to Augusta

The Buhler High School girls and boys basketball teams were swept by Augusta Thursday night at the Jim Baker Fieldhouse.

The Buhler girls lost 48-45 and the Crusader boys lost 50-37.

In the girls game, the Augusta Orioles led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter, 26-15 at halftime and 41-27 at the end of the third quarter. The Buhler girls rallied with an 18-7 run in the fourth quarter but fell short.

In the boys game, Augusta led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, 24-18 at halftime and 40-27 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Sub-state pairings for Kansas Class 4A will be announced Saturday morning by the KSHSAA.

Season ends for Haven girls at Halstead Class 3A sub-state

The season ended for the Haven girls basketball team with a 42-38 upset loss to Marysille in the first round of the Kansas Class 3A Halstead sub-state Thursday at the Haven gymnasium.

Marysville led 21-17 at halftime and 33-28 after three quarters. Haven outscored Marysville 10-9 in the fourth quarter.

Avery Brawner led the Haven Wildcats with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Sienna DeFrain scored 10 points. Zaprina Percy scored 6 points and Sydney Holzrichter 5.

Rilynn Patry grabbed 5 rebounds and Holzrichter had 3 assists. Brawner had 4 steals and DeFrain 3.

Lindsey Dressman led Marysville with 17 points. Aubrey Dressman scored 9 and Kacy Roesch 8.

Haven, which qualified for the 3A state tournament last year, finished the season with a 14-7 record.

Marysville (10-11) plays at Cheney in the semifinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

In another  Class 3A girls Halstead sub-state game, No. 2-seed Halstead defeated Smoky Valley 63-36.

Halstead improved to 19-1. Smoky Valley finished the season with a 6-14 record.

The Dragons will host a semifinal matchup at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Nemaha Central, which defeated Wichita Trinity Academy 50-44 Thursday night at Seneca.

Sterling boys advance to sub-state semifinals

In the Kansas Class 2A boys Sublette sub-state, the Sterling Black Bears routed the Phillipsburg Panthers 67-27 Thursday night at the Sterling High School gymnasium.

Sterling improved to 17-3. Phillipsburg finished the season with a 7-15 record.

Sterling will play the Thomas More Prep-Medicine Lodge winner in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Blake Smith led the Black Bears with 19 points, followed by Boston Ekart with 13, Jacob Lewis 9, Wyatt Newberry 8, Zane Farney 6 and Zach Dashiell 6.

Season ends for Nickerson girls with loss to Colby

In the Kansas Class 3A girls Scott Community sub-state, the Nickerson girls lost to Colby 69-18 Thursday at the Colby Event Center.

Colby led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, 38-11 at halftime and 54-18 at the end of the third quarter.

Colby, ranked No. 4 in 3A girls, improved to 19-2. Nickerson finished the season with a 1-20 record.

Blue Dragon baseball team splits doubleheader against Coffeyville

The 21st-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team split a doubleheader Thursday afternoon against Coffeyville Community College at Hobart-Detter Field.

Coffeyville won the first game 9-6 and snapped the Blue Dragons’ nine-game winning streak.

Hutchinson won the second game 15-5 (7 innings, run rule) and improved to 10-1.

The Hutchinson-Coffeyville series concludes with 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Coffeyville.

Buhler bowlers sweep 4-1A regional team titles, Macy Miller is regional girls champ

The Buhler High School girls and boys bowlers swept the team championships at the Kansas Class 4-1A regional bowling tournament Wednesday at the Alley in Hutchinson.

Buhler’s Macy Miller placed first in the girls competition with a 508 series and was the first-place medalist.

Other Buhler girls medalists are Eva Goertz, 3rd, 454; Madalyn Bohringer, 5th, 442; Aubrey Ewing, 6th, 434; Cheyann Geesling, 7th, 387; and Brayla Johnson, 9th, 359.

Buhler placed first with 2247 pins, followed by McPherson 1926, Holcomb 675, Smoky Valley 449 and Solomon 226.

Medalists for the Buhler boys were Julian Morrison, 3rd place, 583; Malachi Willis, 5th, 572; Rylan Klug, 6th, 572; Dominic Gaede, 7th, 537; Trevor Trustian, 10th, 502; and Logan Brown 13th, 478.

The Buhler boys placed first with 3165 pins, followed by McPherson 2806, Holcomb 2603, Salina Sacred Heart 2222, Solomon 2114 and Hesston 1686.

Hutchinson High School boys and girls bowlers hosted a Kansas 5A regional Thursday at The Alley.

The state bowling tournaments will take place at Bowlero Northrock in Wichita (3232 North Rock Road): Class 5A on March 5, Class 4-1A on March 6 and Class 6A on March 7.

Hutchinson’s Jacob Bofink qualifies for 5A state bowling

Jacob Bofink qualified for the Kansas 5A boys bowling state tournament with a fourth-place finish with a 669 series at the 5A regional tournament Thursday at The Alley in Hutchinson.

The Hutchinson Salthawks placed ninth in the team standings with 2929 pins.

Bofink placed 19th at the 2024 state tournament.

Hutchinson’s Tanner Cunningham finished 23rd with a 569 series, followed by Teagan England, 35th, 519; Austin Hoag, 40th, 511; Stryker Hartman, 45th, 496; and Cooper Oller, 63rd, 411.

Maize South (3476), Salina South (3182) and Bishop Carroll (3174) placed first, second and third and qualified for the state tournament.

Newton placed fourth 3155, followed by Salina Central 3093, Goddard Eisenhower 3076, Great Bend 3063 and Goddard 3061. Valley Center placed 10th at 2843, followed by Hays 2831.

The Hutchinson Salthawk girls placed seventh with a 2124 total.

The top three state qualifying spots went to Bishop Carroll 2915, Salina South 2910 and Maize South 2796. Goddard Eisenhower placed fourth 2767, followed by Great Bend 2404 and Salina Central 2139.

Valley Center placed eighth with 2042 pins, followed by Newton 2039, Hays 1945 and Goddard 1933.

Hutchinson’s top bowler was Alexis Jones, who placed 20th with a 465 series. Arya Byard was 35th, 390; Naddy Wellington, 38th, 385; Awak Diing, 44th, 364; Jessie Reed, 48th, 339; and Katheryn Richards, 61st, 290.

Hutchinson Trinity’s Mattie Galliher to pay volleyball at HutchCC

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School’s Mattie Galliher, a 5-foot-11 middle blocker, signed a letter of intent Wednesday afternoon to play volleyball at Hutchinson Community College.

Galliher played volleyball for Celtic coaches Lauren Cost and Jan Frieb. She also played volleyball for the Salt City Crush and The Shockwave Volleyball Academy.

Galliher plays softball during the spring for the Celtics and played basketball for three seasons.

Galliher is one of the first signings for new Blue Dragons’ volleyball coach Dayana Acevedo Trent, who took the position on Jan. 9.

Acevedo Trent, who played college volleyball at Iowa Western and the University of Texas-El Paso, was the head coach at Odessa College in Texas.

She posted a 98-29 record in four seasons, including a 15-7 record in the Region 5 Tournament (including two championships and two NJCAA Tournament appearances).

Acevedo Trent also served as an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College.

Hutchinson Trinity’s Luke Kerns competing for Buhler at state wrestling

Hutchinson Trinity High School junior Luke Kerns will compete at the 4A State Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Kerns wrestles for Buhler since Hutchinson Trinity does not have a wrestling program.

Kerns will be the No. 2 seed in the 165-pound weight division. He is currently 41-7 on the year and unbeaten since the Christmas break.

The state boys and girls wrestling tournaments take place Friday and Saturday — Class 6A in Overland Park, Class 5A in Park City, Class 4A in Salina and Class 3-1A in Hays.

Ad Astra Radio honors Haven senior wrestler Jake Moore

Ad Astra Radio’s Athlete of the Week is Haven High School senior wrestler Jake Moore.

Moore has continued his dominant season by winning the Class 3-2-1A regional at Hoisington. After receiving a first-round bye, Moore dominated his next two matches.

Moore first beat Moundridge’s Daniel Kuder with a first-period pin, and then he beat Russell’s Dakota Sullivan 21-5 in the semifinals.

Moore didn’t have to wrestle in the championship match, as Ellis’ Asher Hasg took a medical forfeit.

After winning regionals, Moore improved to 33-2 and 137-25 overall during his high school career. He heads to the state tournament as one of the top four seeds.

Moore will open the state tournament Friday in Hays against Hillsboro’s Ryan Budig.
