Anthony Mazza’s walk-off homer lifts HutchCC baseball team past Des Moines Area

Anthony Mazza belted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the No. 21 Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a 4-3 win over Des Moines Area in the nightcap of the Hutchinson Round Robin Tuesday afternoon at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons, who improved to 7-0, rapped out 10 hits in a 10-5 win over Highland Community College in the middle game of the Round Robin.

This is the second straight season the Blue Dragons have started 7-0.

Highland lost to Des Moines Area 4-0 in the opening game of the Hutchinson Round Robin. The Scotties dropped to 1-9 and have dropped eight straight games.

Hutchinson hosts Des Moines Area CC in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday. The Blue Dragons host a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday against Coffeyville and play a 1 p.m. Saturday twinbill at Coffeyville. 

Des Moines Area CC (5-6) plays a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Butler Community College.

HutchCC women’s basketball team drops to 11th in NJCAA poll

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team (24-3) dropped to 11th place from eighth place in the latest NJCAA Division I women’s basketball poll released on Monday.

Dodge City Community College (24-3) is seventh and Coffeyville Community College (22-4) is 18th. Butler Community College received votes.

Cowley College (25-3) is ranked sixth in the NJCAA Division I poll. Barton Community College (21-6) is ranked 16th and Coffeyville (20-7) is ranked 18th.

Vype Kansas Athletes Spotlight features Haven’s Trista Rogers

Haven High School senior Trista Rogers, who will compete in the Class 155-pond weight class at the Kansas State High School wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, was spotlighted by Hype Kansas magazine.

Reno County Sabres to recognize eight seniors

The Reno County Sabres Homeschool basketball teams will recognize and celebrate eight seniors at their final home games Tuesday night at Plainview Community Center in Partridge.

Senior presentations will follow the 5 p.m. game against the Wichita Defender, followed by varsity boys and girls game.

Senior girls are Adia Snell, Anne Schawe, Bryleigh Cable, Shania Schrock, Megan Asberry and manager Maggie Spexarth. Senior boys are Brecken Guthrie and Andrew Keller.

The Sabre varsity girls and boys compete at the KBCA Tournament Friday at the McPherson Community Building and the NDII Tournament March 6 at the Salina Fieldhouse.
