Kade Smith is 5A West regional wrestling champion at 165 pounds

Seven Hutchinson High School wrestlers qualified for the Class 5A boys state tournament scheduled for next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-March 1) at Park City Arena.

Hutchinson senior Kade Smith won the title at 165 pounds at the Class 5A West regional at Newton High School Saturday.

Smith decisioned Great Bend’s Jace Schartz 4-1 in the championship match. Smith posted a 4-0 record at regionals.

Other Salthawk state qualifiers are Dion Brown, 105 pounds, 8th place at regionals (2-3); Cruz Cannon, 113, 3rd place at regionals (4-1); Cooper Harris, 150 pounds, 7th place at regional (3-2); Max Harris, 157 pounds, 3rd place at regionals (4-1); Jackson Anderson, 175 pounds, 7th place at regional (3-2); and Skylar Ray, 215 pounds. 8th place at regionals (2-3).

Also competing for Hutchinson at the regional meet but not placing were Kam Wilson, 132 pounds, 1-2; Alex Stowell, 138, 1-2; Ayden Robidioux, 144, 0-2; Kevin Wilson, 190, 0-2; and Ashton Lawrence, heavyweight, 0-2.

Hutchinson placed 10th in the team standings with 102 points.

Class 2A Moundridge sub-state openers: Hutchinson Trinity boys play Remington, Celtic girls draw Bennington

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School boys basketball team defeated Inman 65-45 Friday night at Inman and the Hutchinson Trinity girls lost to Inman 74-16.

The Trinity boys (7-13) play Remington (13-7) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Kansas Class 2A sub-state Thursday at Whitewater.

Other first-round boys 2A Moundridge sub-state matchups Thursday: Salina Sacred Heart (18-0) hosts Inman (3-16), Bennington (13-7) hosts Solomon (11-9) and Ell-Saline (17-3) hosts Sedgwick (4-16).

The winners advance to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. The championship game is Friday, March 7.

The Trinity girls (2-18) play Bennington (17-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Kansas Class 2A sub-state at Bennington.

In other first-round Class 2A Moundridge sub-state games Thursday, Marion (13-7) hosts Classical School of Wichita (11-9), Inman (16-3) hosts Sedgwick (3-16) and Berean Academy (14-6) hosts Wichita Central Christian Academy (9-11).

The winners advance to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. The championship game is Saturday, March 8.

Haven teams to host first-round games in Class 3A Halstead sub-state

The Haven High School boys and girls basketball teams will host first-round games in the Kansas Class 3A Halstead Sub-State #1tournament.

The Haven Wildcat boys (17-3) are the No. 4 seed in Sub-State #1 and will host Riley County (5-14) and Wichita Collegiate (15-4) hosts Halstead (7-12), Both games start at 7 p.m. Friday.

The boys semifinals winners play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. The championship game is Saturday, March 8.

The Haven girls (14-6) will host Marysville (9-11) in the first round and the Halstead girls (18-1) will host Smoky Valley (6-13). Both games are at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The girls semifinals winners play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. The championship game is Friday, March 7.

Buhler boys bowling team wins AVCTL 3/4 title, girls place 2nd, Braylon Johnson wins regional crown

The Buhler High School varsity boys bowling team captured the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Divisions 3/4 tournament Friday at  Bowlero Wichita and the Crusader girls placed second.

The Buhler boys and Mulvane both scored 3228 pins, followed by Andale 3216, Augusta 3079, Circle 2986, Wichita Collegiate 2884, McPherson 2732, El Dorado 1633 and Clearwater 947.

The team with the higher Baker score (Buhler) captured the AVCTL 3/4 championship. 

Buhler’s Rylan Klug placed fourth with a 636 series, Julian Morrison placed sixth with 619, Malachi Willis ninth with 599, Logan Brown 16th with 550, Trevor Trustian 19th with 544 and Dominic Gaede 28thj with 512.

Andale won the AVCTL 3/4 varsity girls title with 2586 pins, followed by Buhler with 2543, Circle 2324, Augusta 2087, McPherson 1980, Wichita Collegiate 1942, Mulvane 1841 and El Dorado 1744.

Buhler’s Brayla Johnson won the AVCTL 3/4 girls title with a 529 series. Macy Miller placed fifth with 487, Aubrey Ewing placed 12th with 453, Cheyann Geesling 14th with 441 and Eva Goertz was 22nd with 375.

Salthawk bowler Jacob Bofink 4th at AVCTL 1/2 tourney

Hutchinson High School senior Jacob Bofink, who placed 19th at the Kansas Class 5-1A state bowling tournament in 2024, finished fourth at the recent Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division 1/2 Meet.

Bofink and the Salthawk varsity boys edged out Buhler 2,473 pins to 2,424 on Feb. 13 at The Alley in Hutchinson. McPherson was third with 2,272 and El Dorado fourth with 1,535,

Buhler won the varsity girls, junior varsity boys and JV girls divisions with 2,021 pins, 2,072 pins and 1,379 pins. Hutchinson was second in the divisions with 1,634 pins, 1,687 pins and 1,351 pins.

In 18 games this season, Bofink averages a 201 score with a high game of 276 (Feb. 13) and a high series of 685.

Senior Tanner Cunningham averages 197, followed by freshman Austin Hoag 175, freshman Teagan England 153, senior Stryker Hartman 147, junior Cooper Oller 139, freshman Connor Feldman 126, freshman Finley Winkler 121, freshman Tanner Schenk 120, freshman Chance Eaton 108, freshman Javen Henderson 108 and junior Michael Briggs 83.

Freshman Alexis Jones leads the Salthawk girls with a 137 average, followed by sophomore Naddy Wellington 136, freshman Arya Byard 132, senior Ava Burlie 131, senior Ceilidh Rimbey 128, senior Willow Johnson 118, senior Jessie Reed 114, sophomore Awak Diing 109, junior Phoebe Gorgas 102, freshman Katheryn Richards 96, sophomore Mya Tipton 92 and junior Ryleigh Applegate 64.

Wellington has the team’s high game with a 191 score, followed by Byard at 189 and Jones at 181. Byard has the high series at 479, followed by Wellington at 477.
