Haven boys basketball team handed its 2nd loss of the season

The Haven High School boys basketball team lost to Pratt 54-43 Monday night at Pratt.

The Wildcats dropped to 16-2 and Pratt improved to 13-5.

Nash Wray led the Haven boys with 16 points and 3 assists. Blake Richey had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Dalton Bontrager had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

Brogan Wray scored 5 points and Maguire Jacques scored 2 points.

Arley Morell led the Greenbacks with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Caleb Strong scored 13 points.

Haven led 9-7 after one quarter and 22-16 at halftime. Pratt scored 17 points and in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth quarter and held Haven to 21 second-half points.

The Haven girls and boys game scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. The Wildcat teams host Hesston Friday night.

Sterling boys roll past Wichita CCA, Black Bear girls fall

The Sterling High School boys basketball team defeated Wichita Central Christian Academy 74-33 Monday night at Wichita. The Black Bears improved to 15-3.

Boston Ekart led the Sterling boys with 19 points. Wyatt Newberry added 13, Zach Dashiell 12, Zane Farney 8 and Eckley Ekart 6.

Ben Patrick led the Wichita CCA boys with 10 points. Hudson Clark scored 8.

The Sterling girls basketball team lost to Wichita CCA 54-43 and dropped to 3-15.

The Sterling girls and boys teams play at Ell-Saline on Friday.

No. 9 Buhler girls take down Mulvane

The Buhler High School girls basketball team, ranked ninth in Class 4A in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll, improved to 14-3 with a 57-39 victory over Mulvane Monday night.

The Buhler girls led Mulvane 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 47-31 at the end of the third quarter. The Crusaders outscored the Wildcats 10-8 in the fourth quarter.

Natalya Krafels poured in 22 points to lead Buhler. Sammie Brooks scored 14 points and Gracie Oard 10.

Halle Ensley led Mulvane with 12 points. Olivia Ellis scored 11 and Kylie Schwanke 9.

The Buhler High School boys basketball team defeated Mulvane 62-57 Monday night at Mulvane.

The Buhler boys improved to 6-11.

Buhler’s girls and boys basketball team play Friday at Towanda-Circle, 

Upcoming schedule

On Wednesday (weather permitting), the Hutchinson High School girls and boys are scheduled to play at Salina South. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.

The Hutchinson Salthawk teams host Newton on Friday. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday night, Nickerson High School’s girls and boys play at Hesston (rescheduled games from Tuesday).

Hutchinson Trinity’s girls and boys will play at Moundridge on Thursday night and at Inman on Friday night.

In other Friday night area matchups, Nickerson hosts Hillsboro, Halstead hosts Elyria Christian, Hutchinson Central Christian plays at Pratt-Skyline, Fairfield hosts Norwich, Burrton hosts Kiowa-South Barber, Pretty Prairie hosts Cunningham, Little River plays at Olpe, Lyons plays at Southeast of Saline and Remington hosts Moundridge.

Area high school teams ranked in final KBCA polls of the season

Five area high school boys and girls programs are ranked in the final Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released on Tuesday.

The Haven boys are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A and Sterling is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A boys.

Halstead is ranked second in Class 3A girls, the Buhler girls are ranked ninth in Class 4A and Haven is ranked 10th in Class 3A girls.

No. 1 boys programs in the state are Shawnee Mission Northwest, Class 6A; Topeka Highland Park, Class 5A; Ottawa, Class 4A; Goodland, Class 3A; Moundridge, Class 2A; Coldwater-South Central, Class 1A DivisionI; and Cunningham, Class 1A Division II.

No. 1 girls programs in the state are Blue Valley North, Class 6A; Topeka Seaman, Class 5A; Wellington, Class 4A; Hesston, Class 3A; Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Class 2A; Little River, Class 1A DivisionI; and Lebo, Class 1A Division II.

The Derby High School girls and boys teams, both ranked No. 1 until losing to Hutchinson’s girls and boys Friday night, are now ranked Nos. 2 and 3 respectively.

Hutchinson Blue Dragon women’s basketball team ranked 8th in latest NJCAA Division I poll

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team, the defending national champions, are ranked eighth in the latest NJCAA Division I women’s poll released on Tuesday.

Dodge City Community College (22-3) and the Blue Dragon women (23-2) are still ranked seventh. The top 11 teams remained unchanged from the Feb. 11 DI poll.

Coffeyville Community College (21-3) is ranked 16th. Butler Community College received votes.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference/Region 6 teams ranked in the top 25 DI men’s poll are Cowley College (23-3), eighth; Barton Community College (21-5), 13th; and Coffeyville (18-7), 21st.

Butler CC received votes.

Area wrestlers listed in latest KWCA rankings

Several area wrestlers are listed in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings released on Tuesday.

In Class 321A girls, Sterling freshman Jacynn Boeken is second at 105 pounds, Lyons junior Kennedy Grizzle is second at 110 pounds. Haven senior Trista Rogers is fourth at 155 pounds and Lyons freshman Taylor Baxter is fifth at 100 pounds.

The Lyons girls are ranked 10th in Class 321A.

In Class 4A girls Halstead senior Kahlyn Davis is second at 130 pounds, Buhler sophomore Lillie Ledford is fifth at 135 pounds and Nickerson senior Elizabeth Dick is sixth at 235 pounds.

In All-Class girls, Boeken is ninth at 105 pounds.

In Class 321A boys, Haven senior Jacob Moore is third at 126 pounds, Lyons sophomore Jace Grizzle is third at 150 pounds, Lyons freshman Marius Lee is sixth at 100 pounds and Haven junior Tanner Loughrie is sixth at 132 pounds.

In 4A boys, Buhler senior Cruz Hershberger is second at 144 pounds, Halstead senior Connor Herman is fifth at 285 pounds and Buhler junior Sammy Hershberger is sixth at 132 pounds.

In Class 5A boys, Hutchinson senior Kade Smith is first at 165 pounds and Hutchinson sophomore Cruz Cannon is second at 113 pounds.

In All-Class boys, Smith is fifth at 165 pounds, Cruz Hershberger fifth at 144 pounds and Cannon is seventh at 113 pounds.

AVCTL 3/4 Bowling Tournament postponed to Friday

The Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Divisions 3/4 bowling tournament at Bowlero Wichita was postponed to Friday.

The Buhler High School girls and boys bowling teams will compete in the AVCTL 3/4 meet.

The tournament originally was scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed because of inclement weather and hazardous driving conditions.

The Crusaders girls and boys bowlers will compete at the same time at the Class 4-1A regionals Feb. 26 at The Alley in Hutchinson. The tournament starts at 10 a.m.

Other schools competing in the 4-1A regional are Hesston, Holcomb, Smoky Valley, McPherson, Salina Sacred Heart and Solomon.

Hutchinson will host a 5A regional at The Alley on Feb. 27.

Bowlero Wichita will host the 5A state bowling tournament March 5, the Class 4-1A state tournament on March 6 and the Class 6A state tournament on March 7.

The Buhler boys bowling teams placed second at the Andover Invitational Saturday morning at Bowlero Wichita with 3306 pins and the Buhler girls placed third with 2616 pins.

Buhler boys medalists were Julian Morrison, second place, 662 series; and Malachi Willis, sixth place, 630 series.

Buhler girls medalists were Madalyn Bohringer, seventh place, 488 series; and Brayla Johnson, 10th place, 482 series.

Nickerson High School athletes competed in the Pratt Virtual Powerlifting Meet Saturday.

The Nickerson girls placed third out of seven teams with 120 points. The Panther boys placed fifth out of nine teams with 169 points.
