Coming off two huge upset wins over the No. 1 Derby Panther girls and boys squads Friday, the Hutchinson Salthawk teams swept the Campus Colts from Haysville Monday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.
The Hutchinson High School girls basketball team won 69-18 and the Hutchinson boys won 75-44.
The Hutchinson-Campus girls and boys games, along with many other games, were moved to Monday because inclement winter weather was in the forecast for Tuesday in the state of Kansas.
The Hutchinson girls improved to 11-5. Campus dropped to 3-14. The Salthawk boys evened their record to 8-8 and the Campus boys are 1-16.
Hutchinson led 24-7 at the end of the first quarter, 43-9 at halftime and 67-16 at the end of the third quarter. Hutchinson and Campus each scored 2 points in the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock because of Hutchinson’s 30-point-plus lead.
Senior Grace Posch and Kaia Smith each scored 20 points for the Salthawks. Posch, who has started for four seasons for the Salthawks, now has scored 902 points during her Hutchinson High School career.

Lily Rodriguez added a season-high 13 points for Hutchinson and Kohlbie Craft contributed 12 points. Ava Krone chipped in with 4 points.
The Salthawks fired in 14 3-point shots, including six by Smith.
“I am very proud of these kids and how we’re currently playing,” said Hutchinson High School girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst. “We’ve got another challenge on Wednesday at Salina South (weather permitting) in a gym we lost in last season.”
The Hutchinson Salthawk boys trailed early against the Campus Colts 14-6, but went on an 11-2 run and led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Hutchinson led 35-32 at halftime. The Salthawks’ Danny Boone hit a 3-pointer to give Hutchinson the lead at the break.
Hutchinson went on a 19-5 run in the third quarter to lead 54-37 at the end of the third quarter.
The Salthawks outscored the Colts 21-7 in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Lamar Govain scored 13 points for Hutchinson at halftime and 20 for the game. Terrell King and Taishaun Govain each scored 17 points for the Salthawks.
Hutchinson made 28-of-50 field goals (56%) and outrebounded the Colts 38-17.
“We kind of sleep-walked through the first half,” said Hutchinson boys basketball coach Bryan Miller during his postgame radio interview. “I thought we did a good job sharing the ball in the second half.”
On Wednesday (weather permitting), the Hutchinson High School girls and boys are scheduled to play at Salina South. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.
The Hutchinson Salthawk teams host Newton on Friday. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.
The Hutchinson High School Salthawk Night of Champions festivities will take place Friday during halftime of the varsity boys basketball game against Newton.
Two state championship teams will be recognized — the 2004 Salthawk football team (the first of seven state football titles for Hutchinson) and the 2005 Salthawk boys golf team (coached by Charlie Pierce).
There will be a postgame gathering at AJ’s Sports Grill, 1223 East 23rd Street, Hutchinson.
King and Salthawk football coach Mike Vernon were honored before the start of the Salthawk boys basketball game against Campus.
King and Vernon were selected as a player and assistant coach for the West Team at the Kansas Shrine Bowl football game slated for June 21 in Dodge City.
King will play college football for the NJCAA Division I national champion Hutchinson Blue Dragons.
Hutchinson Trinity boys hold off Bennington on Senior Night, Celtic girls fall
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School boys and girls basketball teams split games with Bennington Monday night at the Trinity gymnasium.
It was Senior Night at the Trinity gym.
The Trinity boys upset Bennington 59-50 and the Celtic girls lost 60-20.
The Celtic boys improved to 6-12 and Bennington’s boys fell to 12-7.
Sophomore Brecken Dowsey led Trinity with 8 points, 4 steals and 3 assists. Anika Paulsrud scored 6 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, had 1 steal and 1 assist.
The Hutchinson Trinity girls dropped to 2-16. Bennington’s girls are 16-3.
Hutchinson Trinity’s girls and boys will play at Moundridge on Thursday night and at Inman on Friday night.
Other Monday night girls games
The Haven High School girls basketball team bounced back from a Friday loss to Halstead with a 48-45 victory over Pratt Monday night at Pratt.
Haven led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, 23-21 at halftime and 33-28 at the end of the third quarter. Pratt outscored Haven 17-15 win the fourth quarter.
Avery Brawner led the Wildcats with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Sienna DeFrain scored 14 points for Haven. Sydney Holzrichter had 4 assists and 5 rebounds.
Hope Hughes led the Greenbacks with 26 points, including three 3-pointers. Renee Hamm scored 10 points.
The Haven junior varsity girls basketball team also defeated Pratt Monday and continued its undefeated season.
The Buhler High School girls basketball team defeated Mulvane 57-39 Monday night at Mulvane.
The Buhler girls led Mulvane 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 47-31 at the end of the third quarter. The Crusaders outscored the Wildcats 10-8 in the fourth quarter.
The Halstead girls basketball team defeated Smoky Valley 56-43.
The Dragons improved to 17-1. Smoky Valley fell to 6-12.
The Halstead girls led Smoky Valley 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 31-28 at halftime. The Dragons outscored the Vikings 25-15 in the second half.
Yareli Martinez knocked down a 3-point buzzer-beater to lift the Fairfield girls basketball team to a 53-50 victory over South Barber Monday night at Kiowa.
The Reno County Homeschool Sabres girls basketball team defeated Stafford 55-43 at Stanford Monday night.
Other Monday night boys games
The Buhler High School boys basketball team defeated Mulvane 62-57 Monday night at Mulvane.
The visiting Crusader boys trailed 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and 30-23 at halftime. Buhler went on an 18-9 run in the third quarter to take a 41-39 lead. Buhler finished off the victory by outscoring Mulvane 21-18.
Jacob Miller led the Crusaders with 20 points. Isaiah Herdia scored 14. Jared Miller 10 and Asher Zachary 9.
The Buhler boys improved to 6-11.
Jack Entwistle led Mulvane with 16 points. Canon Lazier scored 13, Manny Myers 12 and Cooper Slayton 10.
The Haven boys lost to Pratt 54-43 Monday night at Pratt.
The Wildcats dropped to 16-2 and Pratt improved to 13-5.
The Halstead Dragon boys fell to Smoky Valley 67-44 Monday night at Linsdborg.
Smoky Valley led 16-5 after one quarter and 31-16 at halftime. The Vikings outscored the Dragons 36-28 in the second half.
Braxton Creed led Halstead with 21 points. Braylon Olson led the Vikings with 22 points, including two 3-pointers and 6-of-6 free throw shooting. Ty Heitschmidt added 16 points.
Smoky Valley is 4-14 and Halstead dropped to 7-11.
The Fairfield boys basketball team came from behind to defeat South Barber 52-44 Friday night in Kiowa.
The Little River junior varsity boys basketball team defeated Central Plains to capture the Lyons JV Tournament championship game.
Upcoming area basketball schedules
The Little River-Inman and Haven-Larned matchups for Tuesday night were postponed because of inclement weather in the forecast. Makeup dates will be announced.
On Thursday night, Nickerson High School’s girls and boys play at Hesston (rescheduled from Tuesday).
In Friday night area matchups, Buhler plays at Towanda-Circle, Nickerson hosts Hillsboro, Halstead hosts Elyria Christian, Sterling plays at Ell-Saline, Larned hosts Hesston, Hutchinson Central Christian plays at Pratt-Skyline, Fairfield hosts Norwich, Burrton hosts Kiowa-South Barber, Pretty Prairie hosts Cunningham, Little River plays at Olpe, Lyons plays at Southeast of Saline and Remington hosts Moundridge.
