The Hutchinson High School Salthawk girls wrestling team qualified two for the 5A state tournament from the 5A West Regional Saturday at Topeka Seaman.
Hutchinson’s Aaida Brown qualified for state at 100 pounds and Lexi Lewis qualified at 105 pounds. Brown placed seventh in her weight class with a 3-2 record and Lewis placed eighth with a 2-3 record.
Also competing for Hutchinson but not placing were Chloe Bell, 1-2 at 105 pounds; Princess Mendoza, 1-2 at 135 pounds; Baleigh Cousins, 1-2 at 140 pounds; and Jillian Ferguson, 1-2 170 pounds.
Six area wrestlers qualified for the 4A state tournament from the 4A West Regional at McPherson: Kahlyn Davis, Halstead, 4-1 at 130 pounds, 2nd place; Lillie Ledford, Buhler, 4-2 at 135 pounds, 4th place; Maliyah Jackson, Buhler, 2-3 at 140 pounds, 8th place; Macey Parks, Buhler, 145, 4th place; Ava Armstrong, Halstead, 3-2 at 170 pounds, 5th place; and Elizabeth Dick, Nickerson, 3-1 at 235 pounds, 3rd place.
Pratt won the McPherson 4A regional team title with 162 points. Buhler placed 19th with 57 points, Halstead was 24th with 40.5 points and Nickerson was 27th with 19.5 points.
Also competing for Buhler but not placing were Aubry Leiker, 1-2 at 120 pounds; and Kennedee Appelgate, 3-2 at 130 pounds.
Also competing for Halstead but not placing were Parker Metroyer, 1-2 at 135 pounds; and Addi Thompson, 3-2 at 155 pounds.
Also competing for Nickerson but not placing was Brooklyn Schneider, 2-2 at 125 pounds.
Eight area wrestlers qualified for 3-1A state tournament from the Russell 3-1A Regional.
Lyons High School’s Kennedy Grizzle captured the Russell 3-1A regional title at 110 pounds with a 5-0 record.
The other 3A state qualifiers from the area were were Taylor Baxter, Lyons, 100 pounds, 4-1 record, 3rd place; Jaycyn Boeken, Sterling, 105 pounds, 2nd place; Austyn Bland, Lyons, 2-3 record, 115 pounds, 8th place; Tristel Schroeder, Haven, 125 pounds, 5th place; Nicole Becerra, Lyons, 3-4 record, 130 pounds, 8th place; Trista Rogers, Haven, 5-1 record, 155 pounds, 3rd place; and Isabel Gonzalez, Lyons, 3-2 record, 170, 7th place.
Also competing for Haven but not placing was Lily Wickey, 1-2 at 130 pounds.
Also competing for Sterling but not placing were Emma Kelso, 1-2 at 110 pounds; and Marah Kuhn, 1-2 at 130 pounds.
Langdon-Fairfield’s Kyle Haskins competed at 155 pounds but did not place. Haskins posted a 3-2 record, including two byes and a pin. She lost both her matches on pins.
The Lyons girls placed ninth in the regional with 71 points. Haven placed 19th with 41 points, Sterling was 29th with 22 points and Fairfield finished 36th with 4 points.
Norton won the 3-1A regional title with 187.5 points, edging out second-place Oakley by 3 points.
The girls state wrestling tournaments take place Feb. 28-March 1: Class 6A at The AdventHealth Sports Park in Overland Park, Class 5A at Hartman Arena in Park City near Wichita, Class 4A at Tony’s Pizza Event Center in Salina and Class 3-1A at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Hutchinson boys swim team 6th at AVCTL Division I meet
The Hutchinson High School boys swim team paced sixth out of seven teams at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I swim meet Saturday at Haysville-Campus High School.
Derby won the AVCTL I title with 495 points, followed by Haysville Campus 383, Maize 258, Maize South 301, Valley Center 189, Hutchinson 144 and Salina South 119.
“Everyone cut time in at least one individual or relay split,” said Hutchinson High School swimming coach Brad Johnson on Hutch Salthawk Swimming Facebook page.
“There was someone cheering on their teammates at the end of the pool for every race, even the 200 free relay when both relay teams were in the same heat. They were just behind the starting blocks yelling for each other instead of at the turn end.”
Hutchinson’s Logan Most place fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minutes 57.94 seconds) and 500-yard freestyle (5:26.37). He also posted a time of 52.53 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle.
Most already has qualified for the Kansas Class 5-1A state swim meet in the 100 and 200 free races. At the AVCTL meet, Most took nearly 10 seconds off his 500 freestyle times and to reach the automatic state-qualifying time in that event.
The state meet is Thursday through Saturday at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center in Lenexa (also the site for the 6A state meet).
Jordon Graham placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.63), seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.07) and posted a 30.37 time in the 50-yard backstroke.
Hutchinson’s A team placed sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:54.47), eighth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:04.36) and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:55.67).
Most led off the 400 free relay team. The team also features Zae Gulllen, Ethan Nichols and Graham. They dropped their time by 4 seconds, which is much closer to a Top 24 state-qualifying time.
Elliott Simpson placed 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.01) and posted a time of 1:09.46 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Tate Collins placed 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.41) and 17th in the 500-yard freestyle (6:40.02).
Guillen was 16th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.71) and 19th in the 100-yard freestyle (28.96).
Kye Reneau was 16th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:16.71) and 16th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:24.09).
Griffin Davenport placed 17th in the 50-yard freestyle (28.68) and 19th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:08.41) and Nichols placed 17th in the 200-yard IM (2:49.9).
Gibson Malachchuk placed 19th in the 500-yard freestyle (6:46.03).
Daniel Morales was 21st in the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.12) and 22nd in the 50-yard free (31.72).
The Hutchinson B team did not place in either the 400 free relay (4:46.77) or 200 free relay (2:01.94).
HutchCC track athletes compete at Washburn Ichabod Invite
Hutchinson Community College track athletes competed at the Washburn University Icahabod Invitational Indoor Invitational Friday and Saturday in Topeka.
Two more Blue Dragon indoor track and field records were broken during the weekend:
• Jordyn Picolet broke the women’s 3,000-meter record with a time of 10 minutes, 19.29 seconds and placed 11th
• Farrin Mangelson broke the men’s 3,000-meter record with a time of 8:19.75. Teammate Cornelius Kogo placed ninth in 8:28.14. Mangelson also broke the men’s 5,000-meter indoor record earlier this season with a time of 14:35.25.
• HutchCC’s Da’Shawn Lester won the Men’s Collegiate Division 600-meter race at the Ichabod Invite with a time of 1:12.19. Sophomore Elisha Williams placed 11th with a time of 1:14.08.
• Kebba Makalo placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.77 seconds.
Makalo finished just ahead of former Blue Dragons Ezekiel Seamster and Tre Richardson (former HutchCC football player), who placed third and fourth at 6.77 and 6.78.
• Hutchinson’s Titus Kiprotich placed third in the men’s 1-mile race with a time of 4:10.63.
• Gregory Martinez placed third in the pole vault (14 feet,1 inch).
• Andrew Hildebrand placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 11.67 centimeters.
• HutchCC’s Rickyle Telemaque placed ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.46.
• Sophomore D’Antonio Warren placed 15th in the 200-meter preliminaries with a time of 21.94 seconds.
• Freshman Richard Collins placed 16th in the high jump after clearing 6-0 1/2 (1.84 meters).
• Sophomore David Ultreras placed 18th in thße 5,000-meter finals with a time of 15:52.68.
• Freshman Malique Parkinson was 21st in the long jump after a best jump of 23-3 1/2 (6.79 meters).
• In the Women’s Collegiate Division, national qualifier Deisheline Meyer Scott was the top Blue Dragon finisher on Friday with a fifth-place performance of 44 feet, 2.75 inches (13.48 meters). She posted a 15th-place in the wight throw Saturday with an effort of 48 feet, 3 1/2 inches (moving her up to sixth place on the Blue Dragon eight throw chart).
• Sophomores Abigail Grantham and Laura Avila moved up the Blue Dragon record charts in the mile run. Grantham posted the fourth-fastest Blue Dragon indoor mile run of 5:16.28, shaving 20 seconds off her previous personal record. Grantham placed 19th on Saturday.
• Avila trimmed 17 seconds off her previous PR in the mile with a time of 5:23.57, the sixth-fastest mark in Blue Dragon history. Avila placed 33rd on Saturday.
• Janiel Montaque finished seventh in the event with a distance of 43-5 1/2 inches. Aiyanna Green was 17th with a distance of 38-9 3/4 inches.
• HutchCC freshman Azariah Dawes, a Hutchinson High School alumnus, placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 17-6 1/4 (5.34 meters).
• Kemisha Dominique ran in the 200-meter preliminaries on Friday. She placed 32nd in a time of 26.30 meters.
• 2025 Blue Dragon women’s national indoor track qualifiers are Picolet, 3,000 and 5,000; Avila, 5,000; Meyer Scott, shot put; Montaque, shot put; and Alycea McCoy, shot put.
• 2025 Blue Dragon men’s national indoor track qualifiers are Mangelson, 3,000 and 5,000; Kogo, 3,000 and 5,000; Kiprotich, mile and 5,000; Makalo, 60 and 200; Dvid Thid, 400 ad 600; LeGrand, 800 and 1,000; 4×400 relay.
• Blue Dragon men’s indoor school records broken in 2025: Mangelson 3,000 (8:19.75) and 5,000 (14:35.35); Thid 400 (47.16) and LeGrand 800 (1:53.06).
The Blue Dragon men’s and women’s track team compete at the Region 6 Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday at Pittsburg State University.

Blue Dragon baseball team sweeps series from Rose State

The No. 23-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team earned its second-straight 5-0 start to a season and completed a three-game series sweep of the Rose State Raiders on Saturday.
Led by Taber Stokes’ two hits and Anthony Mazza’s two RBIs, the Blue Dragons defeated the Raiders 6-3 on Saturday morning to sweep the Raiders in a series for the second time in the last five seasons.
Hutchinson won Games 1 and 2 on Friday with victories of 6-1 and 18-4 on Friday.
The Blue Dragons started a season 5-0 for the 11th time in program history. Hutchinson is scheduled to play Highland on Friday and Des Moines Area on Sunday at Hobart-Detter Field.
For the series, the Blue Dragons outscored Rose State 28-8 and out-hit the Raiders 36-20. The Dragons racked up a combined 30 strikeouts in the three-game series.
On Saturday, the Blue Dragons trailed 1-0 after three innings and rallied for six runs over their next four innings to take control.
The Dragons tied and took the lead in the fourth inning. A.J. Mustow scored on a bunt single by Nick Glantz and a Raider throwing error. The Dragons took a 2-1 lead on a two-out RBI single by Scotty Fegen to score Glantz.
Glantz’s sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Glantz for a 3-1 lead. Anthony Mazza delivered a two-run double to score Leo Griffin and Cael Hamrick for a 5-1 lead. Griffin scored on a double steal in the Trent Black in the seventh inning for a 6-1 lead.
The Dragons had eight hits in Game 3. Stokes went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Quinn Maher was 2 for 6 with a pair of singles.
The Blue Dragons stole 10 of 11 bases in the game, which tied for third-most stolen bases in Hutchinson single-game history. Leo Griffin was 4 of 4 in steals, which ties for the third-most individual stolen bases in Hutchinson single-game history.
Sophomore Reece Usselman (1-0) pitched the fifth inning to earn his first win as a Blue Dragons. He had one strikeout with two walks.
Starting pitcher Jake Wolcott allowed two hits and one earned run with two strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Seth Ainsworth worked two innings with two hits and three walks, but no runs allowed with two strikeouts.
Colin Flores pitched the final two innings. He had two strikeouts with three hits, two runs and a walk.
GAME NOTES – Anthony Mazza went 7 of 11 with three doubles and six RBIs in the series. … Nick Glantz, Quinn Maher and C.J. Reid had five hits each in the series. … Seven of the Blue Dragons’ Top 10 single-game stolen base games have come in the Brock Nehls’ era.
Salthawk 9th grade boys basketball team to play for 7th place at Hutchinson Freshman Boys Tournament
The Hutchinson High School freshman boys basketball team will play McPherson in the seventh-place game of their tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Hutch High JV gym.
On Thursday, Derby will play Goddard Eisenhower in the championship game, Kapaun-Mount Carmel will play Maize for third place and Campus will play Garden Cite for fifth place.
The Salthawks lost to Derby 65-34 in the first round of the Hutchinson Freshman Boys Tournament Saturday morning and lost to Haysville Campus 46-37 in the consolation round Saturday afternoon.
In other first-round games Saturday, Kapaun defeated Campus 68-46, Eisenhower defeated McPherson 64-36 and Maize defeated Garden City 42-28.
In the consolation round Saturday, Garden City defeated McPherson 57-44. In the semifinals, Derby defeated Kapaun 59-52 and Eisenhower defeated Maize 39-32.

The Hutchinson High School junior varsity boys wrestling team competed at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League JV Meet Saturday at Valley Center.
Hutchinson’s Karson Etienne placed first at 165 pounds, Daniel Jimenez second at 120, Chris Evans fourth at 157, Jayden Tuchart fourth at 190 and Lucas Bohlen fourth at 215.

The Inman High School girls basketball team lost to Moundridge 48-32 Friday night at Moundridge.
