HutchCC women’s, men’s games at Garden City postponed to Thursday: Grunwald wins Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year award

Wednesday night’s Blue Dragon women’s and men’s basketball games at Garden City were postponed because of wintry weather.

The games will be played Thursday at Conestoga Arena in Garden City. The women’s game starts at 4 p.m., followed by the men;’s game at 6 p.m.

The HutchCC men have a 15-8 overall record (11-6 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, fifth place) after defeating Coffeyville 76-66 on Monday night.

The No. 6-ranked HutchCC women are 21-2 overall (15-2 KJCC, second place). The Blue Dragon women have not played since losing to Coffeyville 64-55 on Feb. 6.

The Garden City men’s basketball team is 13-11 overall (8-10 KJCCC). The Broncbuster women’s basketball team is 11-12 overall (8-10 KJCCC).

The Hutchinson squads host Cloud County Community College at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons teams play at Cowley College in Arkansas City next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Hutchinson hosts Butler Community College at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Feb. 22 (Saturday) and  Pratt Community College at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26.

The Blue Dragons at Seward County Community College March 1 and hosts Dodge City on March 5.

Ad Astra Radio Athlete of the Week: Trinity’s Alex Suter-Tan

Ad Astra Radio’s Athlete of the Week is Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School sophomore point guard Alex Suter-Tan.

Suter-Tan set, and later tied, her career-high in scoring with 22 points. 

Her first 22-point night came in a close 39-35 loss to Wichita Central Christian Academy. Suter-Tan followed up that performance with 22 more points in a 53-45 win over Sedgwick.

Suter-Tan is having a breakout season for the Celtics, averaging 17.1 points a game and has scored at least 20 points in four straight games.

She has also scored 15 points or more 11 times and leads the Celtics with 23 3-pointers made. She also averages 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

Glen Grunwald wins 2025 Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award

Eagle Radio Hutchinson Sports Director Glen Grunwald has been selected by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters to receive the KSHSAA Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award for 2025.

This marks the second time that Grunwald has been given this award, winning it for the first time in 2020.

Grunwald is the voice of the Hutchinson High Salthawks and formerly was the lead sportscaster for the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon football and men’s basketball teams until stepping away last March.

Grunwald joins a fraternity of the state’s finest broadcasters, including former winners, longtime KU voice Bob Davis (1975, current KU voice Brian Hanni (2010 and 2012) and K-State voice Wyatt Thompson (1989).

Eagle Radio, as a company, currently employs six winners.

Junction City’s Dewey Terrill won in 1991, 1995 and 1998. Gerard Wellbrock from Hays won in 1996, 1997 and 2000.

Dustin Armbruster from Hays won in 2013 and 2022, Cole Reif from Great Bend won in 2018 and Devin Hanney from Salina won in 2019 prior to Grunwald’s 2020 win and again in 2021.

Grunwald was honored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) in 2017 as the recipient of the Hod Humiston Award for Broadcast Excellence.

He was also named the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (KIAAA) Sportscaster of the Year in 2022. 

Grunwald has also been honored to be chosen as one of three finalists for the National Sports Media Association organization as Sportscaster of the Year in Kansas for 2023 and again was in the top five finalists this past December for 2024.

Grunwald will receive his award at one of the KSHSAA state basketball championship events in March.

Seven Hutchinson senior wrestlers honored on Senior Night

Seven Hutchinson High School senior wrestlers (six boys and one girl) were honored on Senior Night Tuesday at the North Gym.

The Salthawk boys wrestling team defeated Nickerson 57-17 in a dual Tuesday night.

The honored senior girl was Jillian Ferguson, 170 pounds.

Honored senior boys were Alex Stowell, 138 pounds; Anthony Gresham, 150 pounds; Kade Smith, 165 pounds; Kevin Wilson, 190 pounds; Charles Anderson, 215 pounds; and Skylar Ray, 215 pounds.
