The Hutchinson High School varsity girls and boys basketball teams took two games from the Valley Center Hornets Tuesday at Valley Center.
The Salthawk girls won 41-30 and the Hutchinson boys won 60-47.
The Hutchinson Salthawk girls led 11-4 after one quarter and 22-12 at halftime. Sophomore Tenley Keeton scored 7 of the 11 Salthawk points in the first quarter and had 10 points by halftime.
Valley Center scored the first 8 points of the third quarter to take the lead at 23-22. The Salthawks finished the third quarter with 9-2 run to lead 31-25 at the end of the frame.
Renee Alvarez hit two 3-pointers and Clara Ontjes hit another one for all 9 of the Hutchinson points in the third quarter.
The Salthawks outscored Valley Center 9-5 in the fourth quarter.
Keeton’s 10 points led the Salthawks. Alvarez and Kaia Smith each scored 8 points and Grace Posch 7.
Avery Davis led Valley Center with 14 points. Hannah Duncan scored 10 points for the Hornets.
In the boys game, Valley Center took a 16-9 lead over Hutchinson in the first quarter and led at halftime 26-24.
The Salthawk boys (6-8) outscored Valley Center 21-6 in the third quarter for a 45-32 lead. Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Lamar Govain led the Salthawks with 20 points and Terrell King scored 19. Danny Boone added 9 points and Taishaun Govain 8.
The Hutchinson boys and girls play Friday night at Derby. The girls game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.
Both Derby teams are ranked No. 1 in Kansas Class 6A. The Derby girls defeated Campus 73-30 Tuesday.
Haven Wildcat teams sweep Hoisington
No. 2-ranked Haven boys basketball team and the No. 8-ranked Haven girls swept Hoisington Tuesday night at the Haven gymnasium.
The Haven boys defeated Hoisington 48-27 and girls defeated the Cardinals 54-42 Tuesday night at the Haven gymnasium.
The Haven boys improved to 14-1 and the Haven girls are 13-4. The Hoisington boys dropped to 8-8.
The Haven Wildcat boys jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first quarter against Hoisington and led at halftime 24-13.
Both teams scored 11 points in the third quarter and the Wildcats put the game away with a 14-3 fourth quarter.
Dalton Bontrager led the Haven Wildcats with 19 points and Nash Wray scored 12. Blake Richey scored 7 points and Gatlin Reinhardt 6.
Brogan Wray dished off 8 assists and Nash Wray had 5 steals. Bontrager had 4 steals.
Mason Martin scored 15 of Hoisington’s 27 points, including three 3-pointers.
The Haven girls jumped out to a 21-13 first-quarter lead and led at halftime 30-25. Haven went on a 15-7 third-quarter for a 45-32 lead and was outscored 10-9 in the fourth quarter.
Avery Brawner (22) and Sienna DeFrain (20) combined for 42 of Haven’s 54 points.
Marley Bittell and Kelsi Maier led the Cardinal girls with 10 points apiece. Tianna Lutters scored 8 and Kinley Wilkens 6.
The Haven junior varsity girls defeated Hoisington 38-19. The Haven JV and C team boys also posted victories Tuesday.
The Haven Wildcat teams play at Halstead on Friday. The two schools are holding a joint “Pink out Night” at Halstead.
Hoisington hosts Nickerson on Friday.
Buhler girls rally to defeat Wichita Collegiate, Crusader boys fall to Spartans
The Buhler High School girls and boys basketball teams played at Wichita Collegiate Tuesday night.
The Crusader girls came from behind to defeat the Spartans 51-44. The Buhler boys lost to the Spartans 70-43.
The Buhler girls trailed Collegiate 9-8 after one quarter, 23-19 at halftime and 36-34 at the end of the third quarter.
The Crusader girls outscored Collegiate 17-10 in the fourth quarter for the comeback.
The Buhler boys trailed Collegiate 22-12 at the end of the first quarter, 48-24 at halftime and 66-35 at the end of the third quarter. Buhler outscored Collegiate 8-4 in the fourth quarter.
Mitchel McDaniel led the Buhler boys (5-10) with 13 points. Isaiah Heredia added 10, Jacob Miller 6, Asher Zachary 5, Jared Miller 4, Julian Morrison 3 and Carter Jones 2.
AJ Batiste led the Spartans with 16 points. Jack Green and Jaden Parker each scored 14, Kamari Jennings 10 and Maddon Drumright 9.
Inman girls, Sterling boys prevail at Sterling
The Inman High School girls and Sterling boys basketball teams won easily Tuesday night at the Sterling gymnasium.
The Inman girls won 63-29 and the Sterling boys won 72-26.
The Inman girls led at halftime 43-15. Four Teutons scored in double figures, led by Ellie Thimmesch with 19 points. Suttyn Harris and Taylor Froese each scored 12 and Morgan Froese added 10.
Shklar Olsen led the Black Bear girls with 8 points and Chloe Garrett scored 6.
The Sterling boys led 23-8 after one quarter, 37-13 at halftime and 59-24 after three quarters.
Boston Ekart poured in 31 points for the Sterling Black Bears, including 4-of-6 3-point shooting and 7-of-8 free throw shooting. Zane Farney scored 9 points, Wyatt Newberry 7 and Zac Wohler 6.
Creighton Friesen led Inman with 8 points.
Halstead boys beat Nickerson on buzzer-beating 3-pointer, Dragon girls roll to victory
The Halstead High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams swept Nickerson Tuesday night at the Halstead gymnasium.
The Halstead girls won 66-27 and the Dragon boys won 61-59 on a 3-point shot at the final buzzer by Matthew McClain.
The Halstead girls led 19-13 after one quarter, 42-17 at halftime and 55-25 after three quarters.
The Halstead boys led 20-11 after one quarter and 33-26 at halftime. Nickerson went on a 23-9 run in the third quarter to take a 49-42 lead.
Halstead went on a 19-10 run in the fourth quarter to win the game by 2 points 61-59.
Halstead hosts Haven on Friday and Nickerson plays at Hoisington.
Hutchinson Central Christian boys, girls split games with Cunningham
The Hutchinson Central Christian Cougar boys lost to No. 1-ranked Cunningham 69-49 Tuesday at the CCHS gymnasium.
The Central Christian girls defeated Cunningham 54-25.
Haven boys ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by KBCA
The Haven High School boys basketball team moved up to No. 2 in Class 3A in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll released on Tuesday.
The Sterling boys basketball team is ranked No. 3 in Class 2A.
Halstead is ranked second and Haven 10th in Class 3A girls. Buhler is ranked ninth in Class 4A girls.
No. 1-ranked boys teams are Derby, Class 6A; Topeka Highland Park, Class 5A; Ottawa, Class 4A; Goodland, Class 3A; Moundridge, Class 2A; Coldwater-South Central, Class 1A Division I; and Cunningham, Class 1A Division II.
No. 1-ranked girls teams are Derby, Class 6A; Topeka Seaman, Class 5A; Topeka Hayden, Class 4A; Hesston, Class 3A; Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Class 2A; Little River, Class 1A Division I; and Lebo, Class 1A Division II.
Oard to play basketball at Sterling College, Considine to wrestle at Barton CC
Buhler High School senior Gracie Oard signed with Sterling College Monday to play for the women’s basketball team.
Halstead High School senior Clayton Considine signed with Barton Community College in Great Bend to continue both his academic and wrestling career.
Considine recently surpassed 100 career pins and broke the Halstead wrestling program’s record for victories. As of Jan. 24, he had 132 career wins.

Several area high school wrestlers are listed in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings released on Tuesday.
All Class girls: Haven senior Trista Rogers is ranked seventh at 155 pounds, Lyons freshman Jacynn Boeken is ranked eighth at 105 pounds and Buhler junior Macey Parks is eighth at 145 pounds.
Class 5A girls: Hutchinson junior Sophia Zwickl is sixth at 125 pounds.
Class 4A girls: Parks is first at 145 pounds, Nickerson junior Elizabeth Dick is third at 235 pounds and Buhler sophomore Lillie Ledford is fourth at 135 pounds.
Class 321A girls: Boeken is first at 105 pounds, Lyons junior Kennedy Grizzle is second at 110 pounds, Rogers is third at 155 pounds and Lyons freshman Taylor Baxter is fifth at 100 pounds.
All-Class boys: Hutchinson senior Kade Smith is fifth at 165 pounds, Buhler senior Cruz Hershberger is fifth at 144 pounds, Hutchinson sophomore Cruz Cannon is seventh at 113 pounds and Hutchinson sophomore Max Harris is 10th at 157 pounds.
Class 5A boys: Smith is first at 165 pounds and Cannon is second at 113 pounds.
Class 4A boys: Buhler’s Cruz Hershberger is second at 144 pounds, Halstead senior Connor Herman is fifth at 285 pounds and Buhler junior Sammy Hershberger is sixth at 132 pounds.
Clas 321A boys: Haven senior Jacob Moore is third at 126 pounds, Lyons sophomore Jace Grizzle is third at 150 pounds, Lyons freshman Marius Lee is fifth at 106 pounds and Haven junior Tanner Loughrie is sixth at 132 pounds.
