Hutchinson Blue Dragons upset No. 14 Coffeyville on the road

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon men’s basketball team upset No. 14 Coffeyviille 76-66 n a weather makeup game Monday night at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons, who played for the first time in nine days, are 15-8 overall and 11-6 (fifth place) in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

Hutchinson led 35-30 at halftime.

DJ Dudley led the Blue Dragons with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. He made 10-of-12 free throws.

Bo Aldridge scored 22 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, had 3 steals and blocked 3 shots. Bobby Cannon scored 10 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, had 2 assists and blocked 5 shots.

Kahlil Arnold added 7 points, Amari Davis 4, Mikhail Abdul-Hamid 3, Isaiah Jackson 2 and Kobe Smith 2. Juvon Gamory  played but did not score.

Hutchinson made 16-of-18 free throws and outrebounded the Red Ravens 38-33.

“It was a really good performance by us, especially on the defensive end,” said Hutchinson men’s basketball coach Kyle Fisher during his radio postgame interview.

“We had a lot of opportunities to get rebounds. We wanted to be more disruptive defensively. We were really frustrated by the scheduling of this game (because of the weather).”

Brian Griffith led the Red Ravens with 22 points. Abdul Kuta added 20 points and 7 rebounds. Trenton Ruth contributed 11 points.

Coffeyville (which dropped to 17-6 overall, 13-4 KJCCC) is one of three KJCCC/Region VI teams in the latest NJCAA Division I men’s poll released on Monday.

The others are Cowley College (21-3 overall, 16-2 KJCCC) at No. 8 and defending NJCAA DI men’s champion Barton Community College (19-5 overall, 13-5 KJCCC) at No. 14.

In the NJCAA DI women’s poll, Dodge City Community College (21-3 overall, 16-2 KJCCC) and Hutchinson (21-2 overall, 15-2 KJCCC), the defending NJCAA DI women’s champions, are Nos. 7 and 8.

The Coffeyville women (19-3 overall, 14-3 KJCCC) are ranked 17th. Butler Community College (16-6 overall, 11-5 KJCCC) received votes.

The Blue Dragon women and men are scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Garden City Community College.

The Hutchinson squads host Butler Community College at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hutchinson hosts Pratt Community College at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26, plays at Seward County Community College March 1 and hosts Dodge City on March 5.

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic girls, boys swept at Sterling

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic girls and boys basketball teams were swept Monday night in games that were rescheduled because of weather.

The Trinity girls lost to Sterling 64-42 and the Celtic boys lost 66-45.

Alex Suter-Tan led the Trinity girls with 22 points. Cienna Maskil scored 7 points, Brecken Dowsey 6, Eilley Cost 4 and Anika Paulsrud 3.

Four Black Bear girls scored in double figures, led by Shklar Olsen with 14 points. Blaine Locke scored 12, Chloe Garrett 11 and Aleya Ravenstein 10. Katie Conard added 6 and Julia Wohler 3.

The Sterling girls led at halftime 36-21.

Max Ryan led the Trinity boys with 8 points. Jackson Dozier, Malachiey Alvarez and Cameron Kiser each scored 6 points. Alex Guajardo, Lincoln Barnes, Aaron Gust and Beau Towell each scored 4 points. Lucas Griffith scored 3 points.

Boston Ekart led the Black Bears with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Zane Farney scored 12 points and had 4 assists.

Blake Smith scored 9 points for the Black Bears and Zach Dashiell also had 9. Cameron Morris scored 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Wyatt Newberry added 6 points, Jacob Lewis 3 and Zac Wohler 1.

Sterling hosts Inman on Tuesday and Remington on Friday.

Hutchinson Trinity hosts Berean Academy on Friday.

Nickerson girls, boys fall to Kingman

The Nickerson High School girls and boys basketball teams hosted a weather makeup game Monday night at the Nickerson High School gymnasium.

The Nickerson Panther boys lost a heartbreaker to Kingman 68-66. The Eagles led the Panthers at halftime 39-34.

The Nickerson girls lost to the Kingman Eagles 51-30. Kingman led 18-7 at halftime.

The Nickerson girls and boys play at Halstead on Tuesday and at Hoisington Friday.
