Nickerson High School alumnus and sports standout Ava Jones, who was nearly killed when a car crashed into her family almost three years ago, announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer.

In a recent Instagram post, Jones says she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The story was reported by KAKE-TV’s website kake.com.

“I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma after the results from the biopsy came back,” Jones wrote on Instagram. “This is the news no one ever wants to get, but especially after spending the last 2 1/2 years working my butt off and recovering from getting hit by a car. My body is very strong and I am confident in the doctors here at Iowa.”

In July 2022, Ava, her mother Amy and her father Trey Jones were standing on a sidewalk in Louisville, Ky., when a car driven by Michael Hurley ran into them. The accident killed Trey and critically injured Ava and Amy.

Hurley was later found guilty of murder, driving under the influence and assault. He was sentenced to 70 years in prison.

Jones, who had committed to the University of Iowa, medically retired from basketball last summer. The university honored her scholarship. Jones currently is working toward her degree.
