Nate Dreiling wasn’t defensive coordinator at Arkansas State for very long.

Dreiling, a former Hutchinson High School Salthawk all-state football player named the linebackers coach at the University of Oklahoma, per multiple reports on Saturday.

Nate Dreiling is the son of legendary former Hutchinson Salthawk Randy Dreiling, who won seven state titles in Hutchinson and three more at St. Thomas Aquinas in Overland Park.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Dreiling has informed Arkansas State that he has accepted the University of Oklahoma linebackers job. He was named to the Arkansas State post on Jan. 3 after accepting the job in December.

Dreiling was the interim head coach at Utah State last year and also has served as defensive coordinator at New Mexico State University.

Dreiling joins former Salina South all-state selection and current head coach Brent Venables on the Oklahoma coaching staff. Venables is a former assistant coach at Kansas State University and Clemson University.

Dreiling was a four-time state champion and two-time first-team all-state pick. He broke the school’s single-season tackle record as a senior. Dreiling capped off his high school career in the summer of 2009, as a participant in the Kansas Shrine Bowl game.

After his time as a Salthawk, Dreiling took his talents to southeast Kansas and was a four-time NCAA Division II All-America selection at Pittsburg State.

He became just the third player in school history to earn All-America honors all four seasons as a Gorilla.

Dreiling was tabbed as the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and also earned the NCAA Division II Defensive Player of the Year award after making 139 tackles with 17.0 tackles-for-loss, seven interceptions and six pass breakups.

Dreiling earned the NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year award in 2010 when he led the country with 160 tackles and 20.5 tackles-for-loss.

Dreiling set Pitt State and MIAA records for career tackles (491) and helped lead the Gorillas to the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship.

Oklahoma also named Wes Goodwin as the assistant linebackers coach/outside linebackers coach and defensive analyst.

Goodwin served numerous defensive coaching roles for 13 of the last 16 seasons at Clemson, including defensive coordinator since 2022. He served with Venables at Clemson when Venables was defensive coordinator.

The Sooners also named Ben Arbuckle as the offensive coordinator.

Arbuckle is former player who is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Oklahoma.

He previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Washington State University from 2023 to 2024.

Arbuckle played quarterback ar West Texas A&M University in 2016 and 2017. He previously coached at Houston Baptist, Seminole (Texas) High School and Western Kentucky.

In 2025, Oklahoma will compete for the second year in the Southeastern Conference after being a longtime member of the Big 12 Conference (formerly Big Six, Big Seven and Big Eight).

The Sooners posted a 6-7 record in 2024 (tied for 13th in SEC with a 2-6 league mark). The Sooners lost to Navy 21-20 in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 27.
